Club-v-country has never been so acute as Celtic-Scotland right now

937

These pages have seen Gordon Strachan written off many times since those four days in August 2005 when Celtic conceded nine goals to Artmedia and Motherwell. Last night, as Scotland manager, he got the breaks. First, at the most ridiculous dive for a penalty ever perpetrated by a player on a yellow card (and I have seen Steven Naismith), then, when tired defensive limbs contrived to concede a late winner for Scotland.

If he gets a result away to Slovenia on Sunday, he will have earned whatever grudging appreciation goes his way. A generation of adults have never seen Scotland at an international tournament. They don’t know the joys of losing 3-0 to Morocco, watching a defensive wall shirk at a free kick, or celebrating as an Iranian scored an own goal to deliver a point. It’s time they learned.

Little about Scotland’s success is good news for Celtic. Should we win the league, our first qualification round will start two weeks after the tournament kicks off. Although that round is unlikely to provide a particularly stiff challenge, consider what happened to Newco when they arrived unprepared against Luxembourg semi-professionals.

Even if Scotland don’t reach the finals in Russia, a second place finish in the group for Scotland would see the players face two play-off games in the middle of our Champions League group games, and the possibility of a League Cup final.

Brendan Rodgers will wish his players every success, but he would surely not be too distressed to share hard luck stories with them when they return to training next week. The club-v-country debate has kicked around for decades, but I doubt if any club/country combo has seen it as acute as it is for Celtic and Scotland right now.

Catch up with this CQN Podcast from last month when we interviewed Celtic star from the Centenary season, full back Chris Morris. It’s a great listen…

  1. The core of the Poppy debate has never been about having a go at guys who served in the Forces.

If someone wants to wear a Poppy nobody here ever had a problem with that.

Where the problem lies is Poppy Fascism where people are forced or blackmailed into wearing one.

Every guest on BBC has a Poppy stuck on them, they put it on team jerseys tried to force lads like James McClean to wear one & harassed & barracked him when he refused.

The Poppy was originally to remember those who fell in the 2 World Wars, no problem there but it has been expanded to include the SAS Paratroopers who murdered innocent civilians on Bloody Sunday & they still expected a Bogside Bhoy like James McClean to wear one.

It is correct to say there is no official bar on a Catholic becoming PM, but somehow there has never been one deemed good enough to stand for the post. Add to that Blair felt he could not convert while in office and only did so once he had been stood down. There may be no official bar, but IMO there is certainly a de facto one.

One Avenue Celtic, Hibs and Aberdeen supporters will be going down is King’s Park Avenue on the weekend of the League Cup semi-finals. They’re taking a lesson from history, when, in 2012, similarly to now, faced with the death of Sporting Integrity as attempts were made by the power brokers in Scoddish football to have Sevco admitted to the top tier in their first year of existence, many supporters across the land contacted club chairmen threatening to renew their season tickets and to continue to pay into a rigged game.

Goals, shots! The sexy stuff. But there is more to it than that – but you know this.

    ———————–

    Excellent again CBN.

One thought from me on shooting from distance. And I will use Tom Rogic as an example. Not for the first time the stats show that his accuracy for long distance is low. However, there are two important aspects behind these stats:

    1) When he does score they are usually extremely vital or spectacular or both

    2) By attempting long range efforts and by scoring, it makes defenders think he will be try and get the ball on his left foot for a shot, thus allowing him the occasional fake that leads to goals (or chances) like the winner against Aberdeen in the cup.

The same applies to wingers / full backs who favour coming inside (Roberts) or going on the outside (Tierney). Attempting the opposite now and again, even if not successful puts doubt in the mind of the defenders. Always a good thing.

Stuart Armstrong shooting and scoring with his left foot comes into this category. Forrest likewise with his outside of the right foot shots.

Good point. Putting doubts into the minds of defenders always manufactures time and space.

Of course,in Scotland our players just get whacked as a rule. Removes the doubt, removes the danger.

    And usually without punishment.
