Club-v-country has never been so acute as Celtic-Scotland right now

937

These pages have seen Gordon Strachan written off many times since those four days in August 2005 when Celtic conceded nine goals to Artmedia and Motherwell. Last night, as Scotland manager, he got the breaks. First, at the most ridiculous dive for a penalty ever perpetrated by a player on a yellow card (and I have seen Steven Naismith), then, when tired defensive limbs contrived to concede a late winner for Scotland.

If he gets a result away to Slovenia on Sunday, he will have earned whatever grudging appreciation goes his way. A generation of adults have never seen Scotland at an international tournament. They don’t know the joys of losing 3-0 to Morocco, watching a defensive wall shirk at a free kick, or celebrating as an Iranian scored an own goal to deliver a point. It’s time they learned.

Little about Scotland’s success is good news for Celtic. Should we win the league, our first qualification round will start two weeks after the tournament kicks off. Although that round is unlikely to provide a particularly stiff challenge, consider what happened to Newco when they arrived unprepared against Luxembourg semi-professionals.

Even if Scotland don’t reach the finals in Russia, a second place finish in the group for Scotland would see the players face two play-off games in the middle of our Champions League group games, and the possibility of a League Cup final.

Brendan Rodgers will wish his players every success, but he would surely not be too distressed to share hard luck stories with them when they return to training next week. The club-v-country debate has kicked around for decades, but I doubt if any club/country combo has seen it as acute as it is for Celtic and Scotland right now.

Catch up with this CQN Podcast from last month when we interviewed Celtic star from the Centenary season, full back Chris Morris. It’s a great listen…

Stringer Bell, no doubt the Hunfield crew will have been reinforced by their fellow ‘ Scots Ulsterites’ .

  2. Dallas

Good point. They could be speaking ulstur Scots, and the local plod can’t understand a word of it (its a completely different language after all).

Maybe that’s why nobody’s got the jail yet?

  3. The fantastic ‘Curb your enthusiasm’ returned this week. ‘Lampin’ has now entered my lexicon. Tonight I will be lampin with some lovely vino. Pretty pretty good. Hh

  4. remember going to a game at kilmarnock late sixties. myself and two brothers. just nearing the ground police car pulls in front big sign. stop. 3 of the barstewards got out went all round the car inside and out kept pressing the brake pedal. eventually after about half an hour the swines let us go but we missed about 20 minutes of the game was that their plan?

Gordon64 at 5.57 , it was my television highlight of the week.

Its pleasing the same actors are still in it . Leon is so funny but the actress who plays Jeff’s wife is the best character and is the best swearer on television.

All good here, canny beat a wee trip to the local bakery, wee yin turns her nose up at Greggs, her words “they don’t sell real cakes” :-)

  9. Gerryfaethebrig,

I am Lucky that I can get food from every outlet.

It is plain to see to me that Tesco is kicking ass with its food. None in Dumbarton. :((((

Those others were too busy copying and putting good food out of buisness. Tesco is the go to place for food, IMO. No doubt an over paid KNOB will come in and destroy it.

  10. There may be something to JJs piece today. The SDM charm offensive has begun. According to The Scotsman SDM donated 1.5 million to charity however when you read the article it states the charity donation was given to the ‘Murray Foundation’. Hh

  14. GFTB – Your catchphrase is a right good one.

We are so very lucky to be here right now.

    One thing is Certain.

    Great Celtic Times. Embrace.

The Power of Celtic isn’t even on the pitch.

    It will be Howevaaaah.

  15. Luckily – me and Aidy have got tickets that has a not too bad view of the game.

£70 is way 2 steep. I tried to talk Aidan out of it……. He was having none of it. :))

    A £3 internet charge and £7 delivery.

    Bonkers.

  16. Dessy The return of SDM was always on the cards. It’s a last desperate throw of the dice. DK is clearly toast. Hh

  17. Curb your enthusiasm.

On a recent long flight I watched all of the last series. Brilliantly funny.

The black swan episode really is comedy genius.

There is nothing to prevent a Catholic becoming PM. No legal restrictions that is.

IMO , we all have our own political views; not worth falling out with a mate of > 20 years.

Still its good fun making up over a swally.

    Cheers and HH.

Celtic by Numbers, thank you again , another excellent complilation.

Some Celtic fans I know can be very critical of players in our team.

I say to them, check out the Celtic by Numbers site as the stats can paint a different picture of the players they have criticised . They have never got back to me about reading your site.

Thank you again for all you work.

Very bacically : The act of settlement prevents a Catholic or anyone maried to a Catholic assuming the British throne.

Its a different position with the political No 1.

Anyway, must rush and get a shower befor e the X factor comes on.
