Club-v-country has never been so acute as Celtic-Scotland right now

937

These pages have seen Gordon Strachan written off many times since those four days in August 2005 when Celtic conceded nine goals to Artmedia and Motherwell. Last night, as Scotland manager, he got the breaks. First, at the most ridiculous dive for a penalty ever perpetrated by a player on a yellow card (and I have seen Steven Naismith), then, when tired defensive limbs contrived to concede a late winner for Scotland.

If he gets a result away to Slovenia on Sunday, he will have earned whatever grudging appreciation goes his way. A generation of adults have never seen Scotland at an international tournament. They don’t know the joys of losing 3-0 to Morocco, watching a defensive wall shirk at a free kick, or celebrating as an Iranian scored an own goal to deliver a point. It’s time they learned.

Little about Scotland’s success is good news for Celtic. Should we win the league, our first qualification round will start two weeks after the tournament kicks off. Although that round is unlikely to provide a particularly stiff challenge, consider what happened to Newco when they arrived unprepared against Luxembourg semi-professionals.

Even if Scotland don’t reach the finals in Russia, a second place finish in the group for Scotland would see the players face two play-off games in the middle of our Champions League group games, and the possibility of a League Cup final.

Brendan Rodgers will wish his players every success, but he would surely not be too distressed to share hard luck stories with them when they return to training next week. The club-v-country debate has kicked around for decades, but I doubt if any club/country combo has seen it as acute as it is for Celtic and Scotland right now.

Catch up with this CQN Podcast from last month when we interviewed Celtic star from the Centenary season, full back Chris Morris. It’s a great listen…

Sorry for the delay in responding. Turned my phone off during dinner.

TSC show was great. 50 people in a tiny recording studio. Liam said it was his favourite show ever!

Off to see Paul Weller next week. Always fun.

  4. johnjamessite.com worth a read this morning. Claims a coup at Ibrox in the ‘advanced stages’ involving Murray, the Cardigan…and the usual suspects.

Of course, the authorities wouldn’t let Murray back in to Scoddish fitba. Would they?

  5. Field

Despite their words he would be welcomed back ,king slaughtered in the media and the whole thing dressed up as being good for Scottish football, you need to suspend all common sense and expectation of things being above board, remember they have in the main gotten away with maintaining the history of a liquidated club,no questions asked despite operating two illegal tax schemes and the debt washed away, what are a few directors loans compared to the debt that was run up.

Wait and see it might not be so far fetched.

  6. Anyone know what is happening with regards to the sfa and spfl and their refusals to conduct an enquiry into governance in football,I was under the impression that several avenues were available should they stonewall on this.

  7. It’s worth exercising caution with anything to do with the John james site.

I haven’t read it in months but the guy strikes me as a little unhinged and not someone to be taken seriously. Only an opinion.

    Wee football teaser:

Glasgow born,I am the first player to appear in the European cup final for two different English clubs?

  9. Not unreasonable to think that the latest from JJ is close to the mark. With the alleged bust up between the Parks on providing money,King up in front of the Takeover Panel and the cold shoulder maybe on its way,who knows what further abominations could take place over at that cesspit. We have all witnessed things just as unbelievable happen over there since 2012,not to write off anything in this saga of corruption, fantasy, downright lies, rule bending, and criminal activities to be shocked at any new occurrences.

Even writing this I am shaking my head, but we have the SFA running the show.Who would really bet against it?.

Respecting your opinion, but my opinion is,the more people writing about this and putting it out in the public domain, the better. He has a large number of hits for his site, and one thing I will say about him,he never sits on the fence.Pardon the pun.

Have often thought of writing the same about your good self Ernie.

    LOL.

  13. Anyone taking on the Ibrox franchise would be taking a massive massive gamble. The structural repair, literal and organisational will run in to the tens of millions.

The stadium – where to start? I think the estimates are £15 -£20 million to get it up to spec. Running costs and potential loss of revenue could be included during the period of time it takes to fix. Starting again at hampden is a possibility but if they leave Ibrox I don’t think they would ever be back.

Building a team to compete that is sustainable and affordable. ££????? A lot more than stadium repair.

You are looking at a start up figure of £50 million and probably much much more to get the basics sorted, just to offer some kind of chance to compete with us. And even at that, we are in a position to respond in a very serious way to any emergent footballing competitor.

The potential for legal wrangling with current shareholders, the legacy of liquidation and possible unforeseen claims against newco by oldco employees and issued with who owns what and how much it would all cost are difficult for any prospective new owners.

I feared in 2012 that they would mothball Ibrox, buy the best lower league talents, get in to the top flight quickly and without any financial baggage, announce a share issue, attract investors, get Ibrox reopened with much fanfare and massive goodwill from their support turned in to monetary contributions – they could have been a threat that way.

But they didn’t. Quick buck merchants saw to that. Hubris and supremacist attitudes among The Peepul made that easy. It has also made it practically impossible to get them on a sound financial footing now.

    I don’t see it happening.

I remember travelling down for Liam Brady (?) testimonial vs Arsenal and me and a few Celtic fans joining protest outside South African embassy at Trafalgar Square.

    Anyone there?

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Yes I was and if I recall correctly the chant outside the Embassy was “IRA, ANC, PLO, one struggle one fight”!

That said it’s about all I remember from the day as I lived in London at the time and had boys down staying with me who thought it would be a good idea to start the session at 8am.

They really are in a mess, but looking in on Monkey Media ,you would never know it.Total oblivious to anything that concerns reality.

  17. Oblivious to reality they may well be but when you consider that we have been told for years now that Sevco will be going out of business `next month` and they are still here, maybe our hold on reality is equally tenuous.

With the calibre of ‘stars’ players’ they possess they are not enjoying life as we are.

    We are better than them!!!!!!!!!

  20. Just read the john jsmes thing, against my better judgement. What a waste of time that was. He writes in the manner of an adolescent who is suddenly allowed to swear at his teachers. Stupid nick names and self aggrandisement make up the rest.

Fair play to anyone who follows him, definitely not for me though.

  21. Sid1888- i think you are correct with the chant. I remember asking one of the protesters what it was about.

    He explained.
