Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

  1. Morning,

I wonder if Tom English would have been saying the same thing in his article if you swapped rangers for Celtic.

The nothing to see here Timmy type of reporting is laughable considering what CQN, Philmac and rangerstaxcase have uncovered in the past couple of years.

  2. News just in from the Euro Song contest………..John Terry had to be restrained at the end for trying to burst onto the stage with a Dennark strip on!

  3. Wow! Never thought I would have been agreeing with George anytime soon.

THE controversial left-wing MP George Galloway has been attacked by pro-independence politicians and anti-sectarian campaigners for dragging religion into the debate over the 2014 referendum and claiming the SNP poses a danger to Catholics. Speaking to the Sunday Herald, Galloway warned Scotland’s Catholics to be “careful what they wish for” in the 2014 independence referendum, and claimed that as a Roman Catholic he would have concerns about living in a post-independence, SNP-led Scotland. The Respect MP for Bradford West said “there’s an historic crossover between Scottish nationalism and anti-Irish-Roman Catholicism” and warned Catholic schools would be threatened by independence. Galloway said: “My own experience of growing up as a Roman Catholic in Scotland has led me to fear independence in Scotland. “The possibility of Scotland being a kind of Stormont [the Ulster parliament] is a real one. I wrote a book recently about Neil Lennon’s year of living dangerously and in the course of it I had to revisit some of my own experiences. “Of course, most Scottish people are not swivel-eyed, loyalist sectarians but there are a large number of them. A large six-figure number, and if I were living in Scotland as a Roman Catholic I would be worried about that. “I really urge Scotland’s Catholics to be careful what they wish for, because the SNP has, in its roots, a Tory, anti-Catholic mentality. William Wolfe, former leader –before Alex Salmond’s time but still within my lifetime – called for the Pope to be banned from visiting the country.”

Just reading back here and thinking about a comment … celtic fans are obsessed with the rangers / sevco 5088/ sevco Scotland/ rifc scenario

You know what… if obsessed is the term used when someone campaigns for justice to be done then maybe we are.

But we stand firm behind that banner … good v evil … through the ages many people have sought a fair resolution to skullduggery and we should never let anyone shout us down in our quest to see justice .

rfc Wilson at it again this guy should win awards for Gerry pandering & head firmly buried in sand cant believe this man getting paid for nursing hun egos, obviously couldn’t care a jot about any other team in Scotland, but wait a minute that’s not 100% true if another team even looked, in the least bit shady they’d be painted black & headline news, how does he manage to ignore what’s now common knowledge, can you imagine the furore if he found the least amount of corruption anywhere else in say spl teams directors?

“Yer talking here about the the folk who send bombs n bullets to the Celtic manager for daring to take the SPL title from ‘Walter’.”

    Was ‘Walter’ the manager then?

  17. Got on a plane to Faro a few days before the game stopping in a hotel at a local resort. Anyway we thought it was just a run of the mill tourist flight until we landed and then someone shouted Hail Hail and then the whole plane erupted with the Celtic song…brilliant. Got to the hotel and it was the same, hundreds of Celtic fans with flags hanging from the balconies and singing around the pool. Then a hired car the day before the game. Sleep in the car, the fabulous atmosphere of the day. Top of the Cathedral listening to the noise rising from below. The game and sadness after, the long walk back. Sleep on a bedroom floor meant for two but with five in it. Back to Portugal and home for the Killie game.

Wouldn’t have missed those few days for the world and always think of my good pal Tom who I was with and who a few years later died of the big C, knowing also how much he enjoyed the experience.

  21. Charlotte denies being Craig Whyte. Tom English misses the point. Without the Internet bampots this stuff would not even be commented on by him. So than you Tom for playing your part in opening the issue up to a wider audience.

@CharlotteFakes: Dear @TomEnglishSport Report is so far wide of the mark. Don’t you think CW has a legal team battling me right now? http://t.co/nrYjGc727T

I usually think Galloway is a bit bonkers, but on this I think he has a point.

Scotland has a long history of anti-Irishness. Much more so than England and Wales. Bit naive to assume that it has just gone away.

If anything, the orgy of nationalism that would accompany independence will just emphasise old differences I fear.

Re: schools. In an independent Scotland, with budgets hard-pressed and with most Scots opposed to denominational schooling, there is no way a separate Catholic education system would last more than ten years.

    Hello team,

Yesterday was the birthday of Andrew Kerrins, known to us all as Brother Walfrid

to celebrate Walfrid’s birthday and to pledge support to the 125 4 125 campaign, six celtic fans cycled from Celtic Park yesterday morning, cycling 82 miles to the grave side of Brother Walfrid at Mount St Michael’s Cemetry in Dumfries

The weather was terrible, but the spirit and determination of the team was huge

    happy birthday brother walfrid

As part of my current pledge to the 125 4 125 campaign, I enclose web link, all donations are very much welcome

Interesting from the herald….”never been identified”……what the ..?

Dave King, the former Rangers director, is currently investigating purchasing a significant shareholding in the club. That could take time, since the beneficial owners of some of the stakes have never been identified, although more than 50% of the club is effectively up for sale. In the meantime, though, King could be invited back on to the board. His lawyers have checked his status with regard to the Scottish Football Association’s fit and proper person’s test and, more significantly, King is one of the few figures to be almost universally respected by the Ibrox support. Having invested £20m under Sir David Murray, his emotional and financial commitment to Rangers is well established, but he is not considered one of the old guard.
