Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

The anti Celtic innuendo and anti Celtic bias from our favourite Irish Scotsman hack with deferential name was quite evident pre hun implosion…

    Hello team,

Today is the birthday of Andrew Kerrins, known to us all as Brother Walfrid

to celebrate Walfrid’s birthday and to pledge support to the 125 4 125 campaign, six celtic fans cycled from Celtic Park this morning, cycling 82 miles to the grave side of Brother Walfrid at Mount St Michael’s Cemetry in Dumfries

The weather was terrible, but the spirit and determination of the team was huge

    happy birthday brother walfrid

As part of my current pledge to the 125 4 125 campaign, I enclose web link, all donations are very much welcome

I think George Galloway is on the ball with whats going on in the world generally.

But….I dont agree with his anti indendence for Scotland .

Scotland could prosper free from the deadening influence of England.

A YES vote is not necesarily a vote for SNP goverment anyway.

There comes a time in life when courage is required .

  7. Re George Galloway. I’m disappointed and surprised that George is playing the Religious Card in Scotland. You have to be really careful what you ask for – If we decide to use our votes based on religion then we can hardly complain if the rest of the population does the same!

  9. Seville. Etched on the soul. Almost a pilgrimage. Certainly a time of joy, if tinged with sadness (mainly with Porto’s attitude to the game). My mate and myself flew out to Gerona, having thought we were heading for Barcelona, where we had booked a car. This was about a week before the game. Getting off the plane, a young lhad asked me if I knew when the supporter’s bus was leaving from Barcelona. Anyway, the car hire people got us a car in Gerona and we were off. We visited the likes of Granada and the Alhambra on our way south and then 2 days before the game we reached Torremolinos, where my mate’s brother and family were staying. We stopped our car at the first bar we passed and, I kid you not, we were met by The Celtic Song being sung loud and proud. We ended up the night before the game in an inn about 30 miles north of Seville which was the nearest place to have an available room. There were about 15 guests, every last one a Tim.

The day itself in Seville is unforgettable. Everywhere (and I do mean everywhere) you went there were supporters bedecked in green and white. All enjoying themselves. Standing at the top of the Geraldo (the cathedral tower) all you could hear was the Celtic support singing their hearts out. Utterly amazing.

We arrived at the ground too late to get to our seats. There were guys who had managed to get in without tickets lining the aisles. One guy was good enough to share his seat with me (fortunately, we were mostly on our feet during the match).

Felt really down after the game but wouldn’t have missed the experience for anything. Our support, from all over the world, showed the world what it means to belong to a phenomenon that is more than a club.

  10. How long has Tom English been working in Scotland?

Ive only become aware of him in the last 3-4 years. Maybe he’s been around a bit longer but not long enough to talk down to and lecture us.

Ive heard him calling Celtic supporters parnoid when its been proved we were right.

    Morning Bhoys & Ghirls,

    Re:Seville

It was after the Liverpool game that I decided to buy a ticket for Seville having been unsuccessful on the ticket ballot and had agreed a ceiling limit with MrsCRC of £100. We got to the Monday prior to the final and there I was driving down to LIverpool to pick up a ticket for the final with £400 cash in my pocket. Shhh, don’t tell her!! :-)

Wednesday morning came, I was equipped with my Hoops top and my sombrero and after a diverted flight to Malaga (no more space for landings in Seville apparently) and a bus journey we finally entered Seville, and headed for the square.. As we eventually turned into the square, it was a WOW moment as we caught sight of thousands of Hoops fans and The Henrikmobile. I think the entire green & white half of Glasgow was there. 10 minutes later up popped my brother who had come in via the train from Madrid, with his luggage, which when opened contained beer! Sorted!

On entering the stadium in the evening my thoughts turned to the players, even at this late time it was still humid. How were the players going to play in these conditions? They did and they did us proud.

10 years on and now Glasgow is completely Green & White.

    Re Catholic schools

I think there is some truth in George Galloways fears about the future of Catholic schools in an independent Scotland http://is.gd/MRuD0A and I base this fear on a loyalist bigot who lives across the road from me. I will use him as an example of why I share George Galloways fears.

I have family connections to past Celtic players my Masonic (apron in the Merc) neighbour knows this. When they won 3 in a row he got his pals over to celebrate. Union flags on a car out the house window etc and they drunkenly decided to have a sing song of some of their favourite tunes on the front step while looking at my house.

When Mowbray got the sack all the outside lights were on for the night and when Pope John Paul died at the time we played Hearts the bastards missus (just as bitter as himself who works in a mason ridden lawyers office in Paisley) sent my wife a text ‘joking’ that it was a bad day for me Pope deed Hearts result

But what really convinced me the huns are happy with independence is the day I spotted my loyalist neighbour ( Union flags flown for any royal occasion) wearing an SNP T shirt now can anyone tell me if we ever get independence huns like him (the majority) wont use the ballot box to promote their anti-Catholic views.

I believe some of them see Scottish independence as a means to an end, the end of Catholic schools and ultimately the dilution of Catholicism in Scotland to the point of irrelevance.

Don’t ever forget how much they hate us in my view independence will give them the tools to shut down our schools.

I liked the idea of freedom Braveheart etc but with so many huns with an agenda around I can’t trust Salmond or any future Scottish government not to give way to the power of a anti-Catholic majority using their votes in a sectarian manner. I am convinced in an independent Scotland the schools will become an issue and like Galloway said within a decade they will be gone.

So I won’t be voting for independence because nothing has been said that convinces me that will constitutionally protect Catholic schools and by default Catholicism like the protection my faith has currently at Westminster.

  25. Seville – one of the best ever experiences as part of the Celtic family.

Day 1 – pack the bag with a Celtic top for every day of the trip. Drove down to Manchester two days before the game. Almost lost my ticket during a food break at Tesco Carlisle then found it, after an hour of frantic searching, in the boot of the car. Relief! A few beers and an early night at the Hilton, Manchester Airport.

Day 2 – early flight to Madrid with 2 amigos but only 1 ticket. Madrid was fantastic, full of Celtic fans. Book in to the hotel, change into Hoops and kilt for a day of eating, drinking, singing, photos with the locals/police/fans then back to the hotel at 2am.

Day 3 – the BIG day. Fresh Hoops top – the new “Carling” one. A long drive from Madrid to Seville with massive hangovers. Almost lost my ticket again. The journey was brilliant – flags and scarves out hanging out the car windows, met hundreds of fans in cars and buses en route. Local drivers tooting their horns in support.

Seville was incredible, beyond my wildest dreams. A green and white city, bursting at the seams with joyous fans, singing and dancing to a constant beat of Celtic songs. The greatest example of how to represent your Club and country – ever!

The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible. The joy of Henrik not once but twice delivering world class goals…..only to lose to a mixture of dodgy defending, questionable decisions and poor gamesmanship.

Followed by another example of why we are the best fans in the world – how to handle the deep despair of defeat. A dignified walk back into the city….and then the party started again.

What would it have been like if we had won!

I feel proud and honoured to have been there that wonderful day.

  26. Morning all

    Re Seville.

Few beers in Heraghtys on the Monday night and the bars take on Paella. Crashed out at sister’s – she was already away to Spain.

Up early on Tuesday met mate Tony and caught cab to airport , met other guys in terminal . Mood like a happy evacuation. Fly to Madrid and discover hotel we booked is double booked. Have also lost phone. No hire cars available. Told that only means of getting to Seville is bullet train in first class. Suits us . Two hours later and surrounded by strange men from Dublin who are wearing green and White hooped jerseys we reach Seville.

Meet brother of one of out party who tells us we can crash at some flat owned by an ex-pat. Have a few drinks then crash at chic flat near cathedral . Me and seventy others. In morning Irish girl who is in some way connected to owner asks for cash for privilege. She must have made 2000 Euros – and no brekkie.

Walk round to Cathedral and see Dermot Desmond. Everywhere there are Celtic fans. Go to plaza to meet friend who has flown on for day. A teacher on a sickie so when his teaching assistant colleague ( who is off legitimately) we have to text friend to say a pub we’ll meet him in . Shake off teaching assistant ( actually a good bloke but too likely to let it slip that teacher was at match). Few beers, some songs, paella with a Porto fan , then the walk to the game.

Get to stadium as teams are walking on pitch – that shortcut our teacher friend knew is no such thing.

Game over in flash. Remember cheering our goals and briefly thinking with 20 to go that it’s there for the taking. But that’s it. Leave stadium and walk into town by non short cut route. Meet friends who hadn’t got tickets. Walk to train station – a fair hike away and feet are in agony. Hire car now hired. The unlucky JPS is our designated driver.

Several hours later we arrive at Madrid airport, chirpy and discussing what pub to go to when we get home. Plane cancelled. Arrange flight home via Frankfurt. Sit about airport for hours , get on plane at 5pm but it takes ages to take off and when we get to Frankfurt we miss connecting flight. I am less than happy / sober up when security guard moves his hand towards his gun. I am in some disgrace. Bald BA employee gets us on a flight to Manchester which is going onto Glasgow. He tells us not to get off at Manchester. We get off and as I phone teacher mate from payphone to tell him I won’t be in the IB after all it is announced that flight to Glasgow won’t be proceeding. As I tell my mates that the teacher got he fine they are in mood similar to one in I was in in Frankfurt. But I am laughing now. We badger some BA employee who tells us he’ll drive the six of us plus two German girls who were headed to Glasgow by minibus. As we leave Terminal another plane has arrived from Frankfurt full of Celts and somebody has just broken them the news that no planes to Scotland.

Get home at 4am and am at work on time. Hearts fan in office tells me in all seriousness that it didn’t sound as if there was much of an atmosphere at the match. I’m back

Far too many tales to re-gale in one post ,so will spread them out a bit.
