Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

  1. One of the benefits of CQN is that its a 24/7 platform covering all corners of the globe (is that two benefits?!)

    Anyway using that as a starting point, in the past few weeks have any CQNers seen or heard of Jim Traynor Oberfuhrer for the Department of MisCommunication at the Bigot Dome?

    Come on Jim come out to play, we miss ya, honest we do.

    Well done ole mouldy on your very, very wet bike ride.

    Anyways, whether Scotland is independent or not the catholic faith faces huge challenges in terms of not just secularism but falling attendances and numbers of priests.

    I also think in the past ole george has not been slow to ratchet up religious tensions himself to gain a few votes, eg in the defeat of Oona King

    Smith was the manager of Rangers when Neil was having bullets and bombs sent through the post.

    It was Neil’s first full season and Smith’s last.

    They won the title by a point.

    That is fear that most catholic teachers have.

    As in most occupations there is the nod and the wink..or in this country …the

    handshake or what school did you go too

    ..st…mmm.

    Most Catholic schools are now full of non

    Catholic pupils.

    The reason is the discipline and the ethos that the kids parents have identified is better than non denominational schools.

  13. Tom English is like Spiers: he is intelligent enough to know that he is sitting on the biggest sporting scandal in British history.

    But too afraid to actually do anything about it.

    Morning CQN.. Thought I’d throw in my hazy memories about Seville.

    Made redundant from Fullertons (formerly Mimtec) and received an unexpected windfall. Anyway girlfriend was pregnant with my oldest bhoy so she treated to a week with me in gran canaria as a sweetener for me going to Seville, worked a treat :-)

    Anyhow me and 3 pals booked for a weeks holiday in faro, hired car down to East Midlands for flight passing quite a few green n white decked cars on the way.

    Aparthotel was great, horseshoe shaped with us looking into pool. Couple of nights skinny dipping and singing Elvis songs from the balcony got us a yellow card, which quietened us Down for a night.

    Left for Seville in hired car on morning of game with no tickets but hoping there might be some spares. Driving down the motorway we passed a car and I said to Martin to slow down as I thought I recognised somebody, sure enough another car full of bhoys from Gourock making the same trip. Stopped for a leak and refreshment and also bumped into a couple of bhoys who sit in front of me in JSU..

    Made Seville and parked up, headed to the square which was an amazing sea of green n white, never got any tickets so headed to a park with beer tent bumping into more folk from greenock. After game we ended up driving back to Portugal in the early hours to finish the holiday.

    Stuck in airport relying on updates from the league games from texts back home, disappointing results but nothing can beat the memories from that period in my life

    Anyhow back to lurking for me, good luck to bhoys today

  24. Stopped reading the Tom English Article when he mentioned the Big Tax Case and neglected to mention the ongoing appeal by HMRC. Bampot.

    HE was right about one thing though – we should be a bit more circumspect in our judgements of the stuff coming out of Charlotte Fakes. May well be accurate but we will look mighty stoopid if it’s a hoax.

    Facts that English and co cannot avoid are that the Whyte story i only one strand of a complex story. We all knew and said that there would be question marks over ownership last year. We also wondered, rightly, how a club in the 4th division of Scottish football could afford SPL wages. They are a financial basket case because the newco refused to take the proper, fiscally sound route to winning lower league titles among other things.

    Forget English and his ilk and concentrate on the facts. It’s the cold hard facts that are going to strangle Sevco in its infancy.

  25. Just read the English Article. Here`s my take on it:

    1)He draws in his intended audience with an opening which is negative abut Celtic Supporters;

    2) He reinforces the drawing in process with disingenous comments about Rangers winning the Tax case;

    3) He appeals to reason with “wait and see”

    4)He introduces some criticism of RFC then paints a dismal, potential future for Sevco;

    5) He concludes that the future for Rangers fans does not look too promising.

    I’ve argued with huns in the work constantly, their point being our schools are secular.

    They aren’t, any child can go if the parents agree to the structure.
