Compper, Boyata’s strike and Brendan’s recruitment

218

In 1998, MSV Duisburg sold Celtic 33-year-old Lubomir Moravcik.  Yesterday, Celtic returned the favour by selling Duisburg 34-year-old Marvin Compper.  I think we did the better of the exchange.  Marvellous Marvin, as he was never known at Celtic, goes into the annuals of Celtic history alongside the likes of Rafael Sheidt and Dmitri Kharine.

In the summer of 2017 Dedryck Boyata made it clear he would not sign a new contract, Celtic acknowledged this.  No promises were made (they never are, of course), but Celtic intimated they would try to backfill.

The plan was to have a replacement at the club in January 2018, allowing Dedryck to be sold.  Marvin was scouted, went through the approval process and was purchased.  It took less than 83 minutes for Brendan Rodgers to decide the player was not suitable for Celtic.  For all his brilliance, this episode is emblematic of the glaring weakness of Brendan Rodgers management: recruitment.

The consequences of this were significant.  Dedryck did not get his move last summer.  As a consequence, he went on strike, placing the first poison in the well that month.  He missed the Champions League qualification defeat to AEK Athens, leaving Jack Hendry to fill the gap.  Sentiment in the dressing room was not what it should have been during the most important weeks of the season.

Whatever tally you are keeping on the cost of Compper, you have to consider the liability of a central defender on strike when we go out of the Champions League to a cross ball-goal.

Neil Lennon seems keen on Rapid Vienna left back Boli Mbombo, who he hopes to sign within the next 24 hours.  Before we get too carried away, remember, we lost both a left back and a right back this summer.  I expect at least three full backs coming in, even if we don’t lose a further player.

  1. Hard to believe Compper was properly scouted. How could his first touch/ball control not have been picked up on?

Anyway the fact Rodgers wasn’t sacked after his comments on the eve of the AEK game at Celtic Park when he threw in the towel was a disgrace.

  2. great to see a non project center half signed, when was last time we done this this? 7m is what you expect to be paid for a 1st 11 player

another player signed although not a 1st pick player

    so we need:-

    a right back

    a striker

Note that’s 10m spent of the 28m( basically the Brenden money from Leicester city), we brought in last year and never strengthened so another 18 mullion to spend

eye on the ball don’t let PL keep that money for AGM Balance sheet a long way to go

the right back must have been targeted if not a failure

Hello again all you young rebels.

Agree with Sidney, that must be a first lol, spend the surplus

on another quality defender. and if Kieran stays? what a girfuy’s

to the msm, the huns, and everyone else who hate our club.

Am i dreaming? wait and see.

Best news of this lovely sunny Melbourne morning, NORRIE M’s

lovely daughter Laura is preggie, congratulations, another wee tim

  4. lol saw some comments about the biscuit tin being emptied lol no it isn’t its till full and overflowing

    lots more money to spend

spend it on players and not on AGM balance sheet

Forgot what time it was in the U.K. and elsewhere, they’re probably

    all in kip.

Personally i’m happy the board are spending anything, and another

coupla QUALITY signings would be great but our young capo Kieran

staying would imo give the support a massive boost, after all we’re

a ” Club Like No Other ” and hopefully not just a club like all others

loaded with mercenaries and no emotional ties to anyone.

100% agree on the revisionist agenda on the Brendan Rodgers period.

*nae revisionist agenda here he did good that is except for European humiliations, its the way he left.

He was given a lump of money tae spend on Eddy then decided he wanted tae go tae China, he must be gutted now when he sees what Rafa got, oh I forgot Rafa was a successful Liverpool manager so probably deserved it.

  7. Melbourne Mick they had that sort of money in the bank last summer transfer window and spent nothing.

maybe due to Rodgers, I don’t know.

but I fear we will spend another 5 m and then sell KT,which will ensure pedro bonus is well taken care of

our club is run for one thing in mind, ensuring peters bonus is there, as long as we just above sevco and trophies are there people just clap happily away, the fact that we have spent a fraction of our cash and people believe PL, then we are in trouble. remember sevco went right trough our midfield as if it wasn’t there. still a lot of money to be spent

  18. Good Morning, warm with a slight pleasant breeze in the Chilterns…

So far so good. Have been really impressed by the mix of players we’ve brought in this summer so far.

We have a commanding, experienced Centre Back, who should be able to establish himself as a senior first team player in jig time.

We have a very talented young centre midfielder who is a genuine prospect.

Now we have, what looks like a good squad wing-back who should be coming into his prime in the next few Seasons; some good European performances and an International call up could see the youngmans career taking off.

So great to see Boli Mbombo coming to Celtic Park. Welcome Boli!

    Hail Hail

  19. Another day another rumour about KT. Arsenal fans claiming it’s a “done deal” because we have signed a LB. Neil Lennon has made it clear, he’s a Celtic player and but there is a price. Well above what has been the first and only offer so far. There has been so much rubbish in the meantime.

I really hope we don’t sell as Arsenal fans are insufferable.

    Morning CQN,

I see ARSE NAL are continuing their pursuit of players on the “CHEAP”. For a club of Arsenal’s so called stature is frankly disgusting and I for one hope Tierney thinks long and hard.. I respect money will play a huge part as we know he is CELTIC daft ?

The money in England in my opinion is starting to dry-up after years of over spending so this may be there new tactics. Come buy proven Internationalists on the cheap….

On a happier note, nice to see some positive headlines on how our transfer business is being conducted that of course is unless you’re a West Brom fan lol……..

    ____

Arsenal decided to take up an option for an extra year on Jenkinson’s contract so they could sell him.

Still Don’t believe Tierney is off. One bid has been received and rejected. There’s a lot that’d need to still happen.

  24. English clubs have spent around £160 mill on just 3 players this week, the money is not drying up anytime soon

  25. Sloleybhoy

Lots of confusion on that one but claims he has another year at £45k per week.

He’s pretty mediocre as seen by the countless loans out and the perennial ‘for sale’ sign around his neck. Hope to god it’s not true and people putting 2+2 = 5.

Arsenal do have some very talented youngsters on ther periphery – Nelson, Nketiah, Willock to name a few and if we accept the inevitable then they’d be a great addition to the squad.

  26. NorrieM

Let me add to the congrats from CQNers…lovely story and chuffed to bits for you and the family.

  27. Go tell the Spartim on

On a positive transfer note, apparently Harry Brady has tweeted that Peraud will be our fourth signing, that would be heartening though i see him playing further forward, I suppose Jenkinson is a slight step up from O’Donnell

    ThisisallconjectureCSC

I think we can see thru the Jenkinson and not enough cash as a PLC ruse to subdue any backlash

  28. My friends in Celtic,

So far this has been a good transfer window, with hopefully more to come.

I think KT will be off. His head must be turned with the unrelenting transfer speculation. For clarity he really needed to state unequivocally that he was going nowhere. He has not done that.

If he leaves, he leaves with my best wishes.

For the record, Arsenal have moved into the big league of renumeration.

10 players earning over £100k per week with one player on circa £320k per week.

Football is a relatively short career, who could turn down such life changing salaries. ???

Expectation is never a guarantee of anything happening (see Turnbull).

However I understand many are still in denial that there is a real chance KT will go so i understand some reacting with disinterest to such news.

I assume you heard our managers insinuation that the player is currently unsettled?

I think there are also a lot of Celtic fans also refusing to even contemplate the idea that KT may actually want to leave and quadruple his wages.

I understand its a possibility and I’d be fuming if it happened.

I just believe that it would be the wrong decision. If Tierney is sold, I don’t see the logic.

Unless his hip issues are worse than we know.
