Copenhagen defended their way to the knockout round

173

Celtic travel to Copenhagen on 20 February for their next Europa League tie, with the return game in Glasgow a week later.  Copenhagen are behind Midtjylland in the Danish league and finished second in their Europa group, behind fellow-Scandinavians, Malmo.

They drew 1-1 home and away with Dynamo Kiev, who were eliminated, so although this is a welcome draw, we have two hard games ahead.

Bizarrely, Copenhagen never scored or conceded more than one goal in any of their six group games.  Three 1-1 draws, two 1-0 wins against Lugano, currently sixth in the Swiss table, and a 0-1 home defeat to Malmo saw them defend their way to the knockout stage.

Considering some of the names in the unseeded pot, we have to be happy with the draw.

It was a tremendous achievement by us defeating them home and away.

  3. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

HAVING qualified from the UEFA Europa League group stages top of Group E, Celtic will play FC Copenhagen in the competition’s knockout round of 32 next year. Neil Lennon is excited for the draw, but said two months is a lifetime in football.

“I think it’s a good draw,” said the manager in an exclusive interview with Celtic TV. “We’ve avoided some of the perceived bigger clubs, as some people might see them, but at the same time, Copenhagen are second in their league and are a great side.

“It’s a draw that I don’t think will faze us, and it’s one that we look forward to. For me, it’s always good to have the second leg at home, because we know what we’ll have to take back to Glasgow. Still, it’s important that we perform.”

When the Scottish champions play FC Copenhagen – first away from home on February 20, and again one week later at Paradise – the Danish outfit will have played just one game after their two-month winter break, which starts tomorrow (Tuesday).

Neil Lennon said this could go in Celtic’s favour or against it, and stressed that while his side have performed brilliantly in the tournament so far, there is no room for complacency moving forward.

He added: “Their league splits up, and they go for a two-month break. That may or may not play in our advantage. As for the draw itself, we’re pleased that logistically there isn’t too much travelling involved, and we look forward to it.

“The players have been brilliant in the Europa League so far, but, still, the Copenhagen game isn’t for another two months, which is a lifetime in football. We’ll see what the occasion brings at that time and how strong we are then. As I say, though, they’ve had a great campaign so far and we’ll do all that we can to improve on that.”http://www.celticfc.net/news/17282

RESULTS FROM GAME #23 – CELTIC 2 HIBS 0 (FRIMPONG, EDOUARD)

So, at 12.27pm yesterday the ‘As It Stands’ table had Sevco top of the league. A position they held for 192 minutes until young Jeremie restored our 2 point lead at the top. Some of you will know that I missed the game due to the Baptism of my 2 grandsons. I had hoped to catch a rerun of the game on Sunday evening but my usual source let me down. So, for the first time, there’s no votes from me.

Thanks again for your support and to the 42 who voted. And, not surprisingly, we have our 3rd 100%er of the competition, with Young Master Frimpong joining Fraser (from the league cup final) and Olivier (from the league cup quarter final, a game that saw Jeremie make his first start for us).

The votes for the 13 players who took to the field are as follows –

    Forster: 1

    Frimpong: 42

    Bitton: 4

    Ajer: 18

    Jullien: 0

    Bolingoli-Mbombo: 1

    Brown: 23

    McGregor: 19

    Ntcham: 5

    Forrest: 0

    Edouard: 8

    Griffiths: 0

    Rogic: 0

Unused subs – Gordon, Taylor, Bayo, Bauer, Morgan

Therefore, the players receiving points for the Hibs game are –

    Frimpong – 5 points

    Brown – 4 points

    Ajer – 3 points

    McGregor – 2 points

    Edouard – 1 point

That leaves the overall table reading as follows –

    Brown – 49 points

    Christie – 36 points

    Edouard – 33 points

    Frimpong – 30 points

    Forrest – 26 points

    Jullien – 24 points

    McGregor – 23 points

    Elyounoussi – 22 points

    Forster – 20 points

    Ntcham – 14 points

    Ajer – 14 points

    Bolingoli-Mbombo – 13 points

    Bauer – 11 points

    Hayes – 8 points

    Elhamed – 8 points

    Taylor – 5 points

    Griffiths – 4 points

    Bitton – 4 points

    Bayo – 3 points

    Johnston – 3 points

    Robertson – 2 points

    Morgan – 2 points

    Rogic – 1 point

Next up, Hearts. And with a chance to go 5 points clear at the top. Voting will open around 9.30 on Wednesday.

    Hail Hail

Some on having go at the GB for their banner.Don’t get me wrong,I love what Rod does for the club, publicity wise, but having been about the fans, surely he must have known what Tory’s mean to the fans.We are perfectly entitled as a support to rail against anything that our club ethos stands for. Those who come away with nonsense”A club open to all”,would that mean we would all be as fans, welcoming to Tommy Robinson making an a appearance at Celtic Park ,at half time.Goes peace, you are either for the ethos or not.

Well done the GB.And I like Rod.

    There is still one vote missing. 42 voters x 3. 42 voted for Frimpong. So let’s say 42 x 2 = 84. But only 83 votes among the others… ???

  11. What a nightmare I’m having here! It was Brown and Ajer that I originally understated by 2. McGregors total was correct all along. Who’s taking this over in January???

  12. It’s OK Jobo you are doing a great job. I reckon if the points were averaged by the number of games each player played in, wee Frimpong would be leading by a mile.

Whether you wish to welcome a fellow supporter is your business , but should your preferences be imposed on other supporters or on OUR Club ?

Why do you imagine that your preferences reflect the ethos of our club more than the preferences of any other supporter ?

Such an imposition is reflective of the hun , not the Tim .

  15. Looking at the videos of the Brazilian CH we are being liked with for around 3.5million,it makes you wonder. He is very tall, great pace, looks like reads the game very well,so ticks all the boxes. You really have to wonder what EPL clubs are thinking.”3.5 millionsorry, not expensive enough for us”.A joke that league,do they have no scouts looking for players under 30 million.Prime case, the wee SA striker signed by Newcastle.I think, nearly 30 appearances,no goals, one assist.FFS.

  23. I think you’ll find that the Labour voting London Dock workers went out on strike in support of Enoch Powell after he was sacked for his racist speech. A sign of the times I’m afraid. Is Rod Stewart still a racist 48 years later? Who knows? But people’s attitude to non-white immigrants in the 60’s and 70’s was not one of tolerance and I would include the white Irish in that.

About 32 million votes were cast in this election. The turnout was 67.3% of registered voters, which represents a 1.5% drop on the 2017 general election.

The Conservatives won the most seats – 365 – and also the biggest share of votes, 45%, or about 13.9 million.

  27. Polls in the 1960s and 1970s showed that Powell’s views were popular among the British population at the time.[32] A Gallup poll, for example, showed that 75% of the population were sympathetic to Powell’s views.[33] An NOP poll showed that approximately 75% of the British population agreed with Powell’s demand for non-white immigration to be halted completely, and about 60% agreed with his inflammatory call for the repatriation of non-whites already resident in Britain.[32]

I am not going to castigate Rod Stewart for something stupid he said in 1971 and use it as a stick to beat him with because of his equally stupid Boris tweet. Unfortunately, his view was quite popular at the time along with possibly, dare I say it, people who were related to you, me and other Celtic supporters.

    Thanks, Pog.

Was unaware of some of this .

    Al Jazeera.

Powell’s symbiotic relationship with the far right cannot account for all of the support he received though. It does not explain why left-wing trade unions also came out in his support, or how the left-wing Labour government then introduced the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, ending a welcome period for members of former colonies. What Powell was saying clearly resonated with millions, if not tens of millions.

Unexpected public figures leapt to his defence. Eric Clapton, the famed guitarist, expressed support for Powell on stage in 1976 and asked “foreigners” to leave.

The staunch socialist leader of the Labour Party, Michael Foot, called him an “outstanding personality” and described his sacking as “tragic.” Powell had proposed a “ministry of repatriation” to co-ordinate “voluntary repatriations,” although the idea never got implemented.

  29. Stewart Milne is not going to get away with lecturing us on and suggesting that we have done some grubby deal with Sevco to oppose reform. I do not believe that for one second, and actually I know that even if it were true it would not matter a damn.
