Corner frailty against Brazilian imposters

115

Celtic have played lower league opposition three times this season but last night was surely the most ineffective performance we’ve seen from a football team in some years.  Dunfermline limited Celtic to two goals and – to be fair – Jim McIntyre spotted a defensive weakness at corner kicks, which his team were able to exploit twice, almost leading to a goal on one occasion, but there was none of the coordination and skill we faced against Falkirk, Ross County and arguably, Peterhead.

How they had the audacity to walk onto a football field dressed as Brazil we’ll never know.

After the first Dunfermline corner ‘scare’ (I’m being generous) I watched the setup for their second half corner attempt.  Celtic had 10 defenders inside the box, including Fraser Forster, against five Dunfermline attackers.  Defensively, we looked well setup, but the delivery was particularly good, an in-swinger, dipping beyond the far post into a secondary zone.

Defending zonally (which I am in favour of with a small concession to man-mark one or two key threats) involves protecting the key areas in front of goal, where opponents are most likely to score from.  This compromises peripheral areas, in particular the acute angles before the front post and beyond the back post.  When you get a good delivery from a corner kick, as Dunfermline provided last night, forwards can attack the area in front of the near post looking for a glancing header, or rush to the back of the six yard box, from where they can deliver a reverse ball into the primary danger area.

For all their frailties, they figured out how to get the better of Celtic at corner kicks.

Ernie, I agree with you about Hugh MacDonald. He’s a self-confessed Celtic supporter. It might be difficult for him to come out and CCuse Ogilvie of being in an untenavble position but by doing what he has done, the followers of TFOD will be quick to pick up on it and our own people will then come out and indicate the historical position of Ogilvie during EBT introduction at Rangers and Hearts.

“SFA President Campbell Ogilvie has, so far, not said anything on the demise of a club he served until 2005. Unless Rangers somehow avert their slide into the abyss he too will be duty bound to explain his role in what did, or more pointedly, did not happen while he was in the boardroom.”

The kitman,Jimmy Bell,is one of the most bitter of them all.A really angry wee man,he couldn’t even raise a smile when they were “winning” trophies. It is not healthy for a person to carry so much hate within.

Ah well, the only person that his bitterness is hurting,is himself.

Not necessarily – maybe he was merely repeating what someone had told him to be the case .

Maybe he had seen documents which led him to believe what he had been told. Maybe he couldn’t conceive that someone might be lying.. Maybe he truly couldn’t conceive the true nature of who he was dealing with.

Hugh MacDonald is a Celtic fan…fact. He is not a self-confessed Celtic fan. This suggests something to be ashamed of. It is not a sin to be a Celtic supporter. He is a proud Celtic supporter.

No mealy-mouthed I support St. Mirren, Partick Thistle, Falkirk or other tosh that Leckie, Waddell et al come up with.

    ………………………………………………………………

Semantics, shemantics. I know he is a proud Tim but it’s still early in the day. My brain hasn’t woken up yet. I’ve been a Herald reader for decades and I’m a fan of Hugh’s.

  11. Celtic have also scored with the swinging corner to the back post. Perhaps the ball favours attacking places who can get a running jump at the ball. The amount of players in the 6 yard box has stopped keepers coming for these.

  12. Reading through the various posts on last night’s match, Celts seemed to be in freeflow and obviously should have scored more than a couple.

It’s beginning to look like the hay will be saved early this season and we can all sit back and put the feet up.

I just find the term self-confessed a bit as though someone has to get something off their chest.

  15. Was delighted to see Kris Commons play 90 mins last night. Thought he played very well. I think too many of us may have wished him a goal.

I think once he gets one he will quickly weigh in with a few more.

well done Celts for another very professional and enjoyable display.

  16. It is great to see the high regard in which many hold Fraser Foster these days.

He has had a similar reversal as Mulgrew and probably Sammy.

Fair play to all of them. It shows a strength of character that will be valuable for the future of the team.

It’s good to be talking of the future of the team and not of the club isn’t it?

  17. John McGarry is possibly alluding to the fact that those on the Board of Rangers did not put the brakes on Sir Minty. He surrounded himself with yes men.

Thise who questioned were jettisoned, such as Hugh Adam.

Thanks for posting John McGarry’s item from the Scottish Daily Mail. Good on him for going straight for the bullseye!

I don’t know if it’s easier for him (is his paper based in England?) but Sir Minty seems to have an iron grip on what gets printed up here.

As a matter of interest, can anyone remember why such a died-in-the-wool Rangers man as RC Ogilvie (I love his initials) left Rangers for Hearts in the first place. Was there some sort of fallout?

I love to think that the whole EBT shenanigans were started by RC ogilvie but will be finished by hmRC. It sort of squares the circle if you know what I mean.

“When SDM was still owner of Rangers but no longer the Chariman, was he still a director? Can you own a business without being on the board?”

Good question – you certainly can own a Club without beoing a Board Member, you can’t be an owner if you can’t pass the Fit and Proper person test.

My thoughts would be the 5 Year* rule would be included in the Fit and Proper person test.

What happens if you have a minority share holding might be a grey area though – I’m sure the RTC guys could sort that one out.

A very, very comfortable win last night, IMO the defence just nodded off at the corners, as they were getting very little practice!

We would have won by a barrel load last night, if we could have got both full backs going forward more effectively. Cha is a willing horse but too often the final ball hits the first defender, and at the moment Izzy is a shadow of his former self , as he regains match fitness.

Still good to see KC back, must be murder playing against him a 5’s, a tricky wee lhad!

enjoyable game , with the tic playing the right way.

Our new Polish lhad however looked a bit lost, as by that stage we where trying to walk it in, by playing a bunch of short 1-2’s at the edge of the box….. he looked to me as if he would more effective if he could strecth his legs in a more open game.
