CQN Magazine new issue out now! Police, law, Neil and Orange!

673

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine is out today with some exciting changes.  We’re moving print production into the UK for this issue, which will be available after the game against Rangers, with 8 extra pages not included the online version, covering all the drama from next week’s game.

We have a couple of retrospective articles touching on the momentous events of 2011, including an interview with George Galloway, discussing his book about the life Neil Lennon has had to endure.  As you would expect, George doesn’t shirk out of the tackle.

We also have an excellent interview with Elaine C Smith, talking about growing into her life as a Celtic fan, her work and tackling domestic violence.  We cover the recent Football Bill and question the possible agendas behind a senior police officer, and recent striking referee, reporting Celtic fans to Uefa.

We stick our first toe in the short story water, a clarion call to Reclaim the colour Orange, tons of great fan memories, many of which you’ll share and plenty more, it’s all there, including typos and deliberate mistakes!

You can order now with credit/debit card or Paypal and buy direct from the UK for only £3.50 + £1.50 postage and packing.  Shipping costs £2 to ROI, £3 to Europe and £4 to the rest of the known universe.  Click on the link below to order.

Yes, being lazy is cool until you leave something so late that it is now going to cost me a lot more money and a bit more stress.

If only I could’ve been less lazy I would have had things sorted and actually have more time to be lazy!!

    Árd Macha,

For those who attended St Kentigern’s in Duke St in 1957/8 the hotel is next to the dinner school at the top of the Drygate. I could do classroom to dinner table up that hill in under 5 minutes.

To those of you who did not attend and dined, you have never tasted gourmet mince.

Don’t know why but it’s a hostelry I’ve often wanted to visit on the way past.

Wonder how successful the revamp of The Great Eastern has been? That’s just down the road?

  4. Maybe the banner Bhoys can do summitt about that wee boy being remanded for throwing a stone at a car. And thats all it was. Throwing a stone at a car!!. Shocking truly shocking!!

“Shamrock strip”? Pretty sure most of us referred to that strip as our ” Irish ” strip. Have some great memories of Celtic playing in that kit including a very tousy Glasgow Cup match at Parkhead against Rangers. We recorded a rare win and the young Bertie Auld stuck it to a few of them

    Hail Hail CQNers

Garcia Lorca………Thanks for that memory as it’s always bothered me that I could only ever remember Celtic wearing that kit against Kilmarnock but feel sure we must have used against others. It’s the only Celtic top I’ve kept over the years. A few years ago I gifted about a dozen to a pals 2 boys who were getting big enough to wear them. I even chose to wear that top to Seville. I still think it’s a bit of a jinx though I seriously can’t remember ever wearing it to a game we won. I know my old man considered it a bit of a “Jonah” strip as well. He came back from Hampden on a Wednesday afternoon in the 50’s complaining about it as we lost 3-0 to Killie in a semi-final replay…….(I think)

Anyway I’ve loved the trip down memory lane (as always) tonight and the chat about the Leeds games the orange socks (or were they red?) and the highlights of the Leeds game game at Hampden. I was at the Rangers end that night and went back to the Bonington Bar in Nelson Street and started making arrangements for a trip to Milan. Brilliant night.

    Hail Hail to all

  6. And another thing garcia lorca……..was the tousy Glasgow Cup game against Rangers the 4-2 Monday night match before we beat them 3-2 at Ibrox the following Saturday when Big Yogi gave Dougie Baillie nightmares?

Me and my young brother weren’t allowed to go to Celtic v Rangers games so we worked out that by the time we walked from Weir St where Harry Ramsdens is now the game would be nearly finished and we could find out the score. We got to St Luke’s and a Rangers supporter told us it was 2-1 to Celtic and Haffey had saved a penalty from Ralph Brand. We got to Glasgow Green and it was 3-1 to Celtic. As the number of supporters heading towards us was growing and growling I told my brother we better start heading back. Match finished 4-2 and I think Bertie Auld scored as well as Pat Crerand.

    Hail Hail

  8. You know what that shamrock strip could be offensive in some peoples eyes………….esp. the anti irish ones…best to leave it for a later date………….lets say the week before the last game of the season when the leagues been won….now that would upset them

Unusually I’m still up at this late time so great to catch your post. Having a few days off but duty calls on Christmas Day. As it does for Kerri in her first year of work.

Christmas dinner is Boxing Day for us.

Remember the old days? “You have mail”.

Off to read your mail. Take care.

  16. Memory lane. Sounds like a good night tonight.

Celtic wore the Irish strip when beating Rangers 4-2.

I was at both Leeds games.Hard to express the excitement that first semi final caused. A friend and nephew of Bob Kelly took me to Harrogate where the team was based to collect our tickets. All the team were in their strips and I had tea with Desmond White. I would have settled for a narrow defeat- Leeds were a fearsome force- but dear old Desmond assured me and my friend ( Glasgow solicitor Jim Swift ) that Jock had predicted a Celtic victory of 2-0. I truly thought he had gone mad. We were a goal up in 20 seconds and had a second disallowed. Fantastic support that night.

The return leg at Hampden saw Celtic and it’s widening support reach unimaginable heights. You could hardly get near Hampden. I still have my ticket because the crowds were literally climbing over the Walls. I couldn’t get in the Celtic end so went to the Rangers end and went in over the Walls. Never seen anything like it. The noise inside Hampden that night was awesome. We all believed Celtic had won another European Cup that night. When the team did a lap of honour Celtic were top of the world.

Not been following all the posts tonight but I was also at the losing Wednesday afternoon semi against Kilmarnock. They played Falkirk in the final. We did play and lose in that Irish strip. 3-0 or 3-1…. where is Gordon when we need him?

Whilst travelling down memory lane I have a BBC radio recording of theCeltic-Rangers New Years Day 5-1 match. Played virtually on a frozen pitch with John Hughes in sandshoes. 1965 or 1966. Charlie Gallagher scored a belter for 4-1. Some of the Celtic singing…. let’s just say hasn’t stood the test of time. The bells of hell etc

you will still see Charlie every home game at Celtic park… big Yogi at most too..

I, too was at the Leeds Semi at Hampden, but my experience was somewhat surreal.

By a grave miscalculation of timing and geography on the night, I overstayed my time in the Eagle Lodge in Bishopbriggs.

Even so, I still felt that I had time to drive to the ground and park in my usual spot, off Aikenhead Rd.

Unfortunately, the police operated a traffic system which meant I was redirected down Cathcart Rd.

After parking/abandoning my car in a space, which blocked off someone’s driveway in Queen Mary Drive, my mate and I scampered up the hill behind Cathkin, to arrive at the North Stand Enclosure..

By now, it was about 7.45pm, but unbelieveably, there were only about ten people at our turnstile, so we, more or less entered the ground straight away.

Our normal spot at Hampden was in the North enclosure, on the halfway line and it was there we arrived, just as the teams took the field.

We had a great spot with no crushing.

I couldn’t believe the stories after the game of the k132+ crowd and the access problems.

A magical night, which, unfortunately lulled us ALL into a false sense of security.

Took my girlfriend at the time along to the game, her first Celtic game, and was in the area you described.

No crushing whatsoever. Quite a few Leeds fans in that area from memory.

  20. just in.

maybe the 2nd best Celtic game ever.

Saint Stephens HS PG our PE kit was green top, orange shorts and white socks.

    it worked well.

On the socks against Leeds, were they not red, and looked orange under the floodlights, and then Leeds wore the same kind at Hampden for the return leg.

Here, have some nostalgia bhoys, that game Celtic 2 Leeds 1. its a great game.

Bremner said “the wall of noise, Celtic Celtic, Celtic, some of our team just couldnt handle it”.

Around that time I took my girlfriend/wife to a couple of games.

One at Firhill and one at Parkhead.

She spent the nights counting the cigarettes being lit on the terracings.

    I never took her back.

She had as much interested in the game as those kids who go to CP, and turn their back on the game! :>)

At the Leeds second leg we set off from the Gorbals in a car kept getting diverted and ended up dumping it somewhere near Shawfield. Your experience was indeed surreal. I have/had been at plenty of full houses at Hampden but that night topped the lot.

When we heard that Feyenoord was going to be our opponents in Milan then to today’s generation I guess it would be the equivalent of meeting St Mirren in a Scottish Cup Final. Milan was going to be party time. A real lesson in complacency.

  23. thomthethim

    LOL

I noticed those kids also turning their backs tonight at some English game. No originality darn sarf it seems.

They are becoming a bit of a side show.

Anyway, I’m of to my crib, before I waken the indignant brigade.

    Four more sleeps.

“Enjoyed talking” to yourself and Garcia about the great old days.

They’ll never take those away from us.
