Current Celtic issue is not managerial

287

Hindsight and all that, but looking back, Celtic’s form slipped in mid-April this year.  We were imperious until that point, but even wins, like the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Newco, were not as impressive than the League Cup Final win over the same opponents a few weeks earlier.

The season petered out amid home draws against Motherwell and St Mirren and heavy defeats at Ibrox and Easter Road.  The Scottish Cup Final win over Inverness was laboured compared to the League Cup Final performance.

Potency was lost when Aaron Mooy was injured in the second week of March.  He returned for the odd cameo – one start and three substitute appearances, but the sharpness was gone.  Adding to the issue, Cameron Carter-Vickers dropped out of the team after the Scottish Cup semi-final win in April.  Aaron is now gone and it has been Cameron’s turn to put in cameo appearances this season.

Watching our midfield this season, it should be clear to all that the other big absence from the side is Reo Hatate.  Callum McGregor has been partnered with two from Matt O’Riley, David Turnbull and Odin Holm.  Stacks of potential there but we are missing the laser-like craft of Reo, nor have we replaced the strength of Aaron.  Until this is addressed, nothing will change.

This is your timely reminder that Carter-Vickers and Jota didn’t join Celtic until deadline day two years ago.  Without that day’s business, Tottenham fans would not be able to pronounce the name Postecoglou right now.  We are not witnessing a managerial issue, just the normal process of rebuilding a team, while targeting valued players in demand with others fill their trollies with frees and journeymen.

Our own Mouldy67 has suffered injury in recent years, which stopped him participating in the recent Road to Seville cycle event from Celtic Park to the city we descended upon 20 years ago.  I spoke to him last week for the video below and asked about his extraordinary work on behalf of the Celtic FC Foundation and the enormous challenge he is about undertake.

He will complete a virtual cycle of over 1,000 miles, including gradients, to raise money for our Foundation.  For a man carrying an injury, it is a magnificent commitment, one that is an example to a few in the modern game.  It was a moving insight into where we have been as a community in recent years, and Mouldy67’s take on being a Celtic supporter.  I recommend it to you.

You can read more about his story, support his cycling and the work of the Foundation by donating here.  Thank you.

  5. Tearmann: Sanctuary. Duchas.

This word is frequently translated into English as “heritage.”

A word. that is full of death and stasis.

But to an Irish speaker, it means one’s native place, a shared tradition, a collective soul, a kindred affection, a natural affinity.

  13. Good luck Mods on any potential changes. Evolution is natural and something we should embrace.

If the instantly recognisable logo lof the big mad blue bird can be consigned to the nest in the sky, then surely CQN can achieve modest upgrades.

Change doesn’t have to be X rated.

Don’t know how long you’ve been reading CNN but some history helps:-

    1) Depreciation- Paul67 used to try and educate us on transfer assets and amortisation- most of us fell asleep trying not to worry our pretty little heads over such matters.

    2) Saint of the day- used to be posted too and is in no way a reference to Pablophanque who was many things but he’d deny being a saint, if he could do so.

    3) Pablophanque was, I think, a reference to Friday night music which he enjoyed and encouraged.

    4) Bringing Martin Home was what led to the Kano project

Just 4 themes typical of CQN nostalgia, the topic you introduced when you talked of changes to the blog. It was bizarre to see it as a disrespectful reference to the dead. Don’t know where you got that from.

  16. SFTB – Saved me the bother of typing a similar response. Good stuff. Hopefully amortisation is never to return :)

  17. Good morning cqn from a rather damp Garngad.

So is that AT binned because the MOD thought he meant something else.

Personaly I dont think MODs should be posting, I think they should only intervene when after lurking and trying to contact said poster off the blog.

Its like MOD is the Jury, Judge and exectutioner if they do not like a post.

I think there is a need and a place for MODs and its a hard job but try and contact people off the blog.

    Only my opinion of course.

    D :)

  18. Good Morning Celts – Grand Day To Be A Tim,

    Great lead Paul67,

    A lot of uncommon sense

Ange knew what Aaron could bring to the centre of mid-feild as surely as Brendan knew what Kolo Toure could bring to the centre of a defence..

Neither were long term signings but both were crucial signings.

Ange knew in the summer of 2022 that he needed to bolster that midfield, he found a short term solution

He would’ve also known if he stayed it was crucial to find a medium, longterm solution.

Ange played a unique type of football that was hugely draining on players, that’s why it was so important to have two interchangable players in each position on the field*

A brilliant season and our world record making eighth treble will live long in the memory but by April the gas in the tank was way low

What we did need was a squad upgrade, manyvof us could identify those positions as well as Ange and staff, yet it was going to be a tricky window where some top players would leave, according to Ange

He was right about that, as he was so often about another stuff….

*As was shown in the run in, up to his point of departure he had not yet completed that aspect of his team build

    Hail Hail

  19. Mod I think you have misunderstood An Tearmann and tbh I like your stuff as much as the next blogger up until the point you get on your high horse. I have been on here since 2004 and I got the flavour of AT reminiscing. It would be a sad day if you really did bin CQNers for voicing an opinion about this blessed place.

Ps all this pales compared to five years of left back misery. Chill. Hail Hail

  20. Tom McLaughlin on

Reading back, I see there’s still controversy and debate as to precisely when Ange knew he was leaving for Spurs.

Give it till Christmas and the truth will out — Spurs contacted Ange about taking over as manager when he landed in Melbourne as an 8 year-old with his parents after a long sea voyage from Athens.

There’s an end to it now.
