Dangers ahead, unimaginable mess and new euphemism

988

I’m still meeting people who haven’t noticed.  Hibernian are on an outstanding run of form, having won their last three games and undefeated in six.  The last reversal they had was at Celtic Park the first weekend in April.  On Sunday we’re playing the team with the best recent form in Scotland; the warning signs are painted in large green font.

They are dangerous up front, Leigh Griffiths has scored four goals more than any Celtic player, including several stunners.

The weight of the world rested on Hibs’ shoulders at last season’s Scottish Cup final, when the stage was set for a century of pain to be wiped away by defeating their greatest rivals.  It was too much.  Now they take the field unburdened and vastly more dangerous than St Mirren, Hearts or Kilmarnock were when they overcame Celtic at Hampden recently.

Odds on Hibs are very generous.

I caught some chat online last night.  “Blackmail”, “extortion”, “imprisonment”, “getting rid of the problem”, “a catastrophe of an intensity that you…. clearly do not appear to understand”, “fraudulent”, “once the genie is out it will have a life of its own”.

What an unimaginable mess.

I think “Been an admirer of your recent work” is bound to become a euphemism in years to come for when something that should never have been said or written slips out.  This is a small glimpse into how the whole thing happened.

Fantastic Q&A with Willie Wallace this morning, thanks to Willie and Winning Captains.  Willie’s recollections of our great times are irresistible.  Reading the book as it came together was a joy.  You’ll love it.

Remember you can start Cup Final weekend by meeting Willie at a book signing at Waterstons’ on Sauchiehall St, tomorrow – 25th May, 46 years on from the day – from 2pm until 4pm.  If you can’t make it you can order a signed copy below.

macanbheatha Almost all my records are long gone, there are still a few in the attic that I must root out some day but the chances of still having that one are slim to none. To the best of my memory that one includes “The Wren Song”. Happy Days, I’m off to the leaba before I get overcome with nostalgia. I’m single handily minding 4 grandchildren aged 8,6,4 & 2 from 9 in the morning till about 4 in the afternoon. Will get a break for an hour o.k. but will need all my energy. So lift with me the parting glass, goodnight and God be with you all.

  4. Sitting here listening tae Finbar Furey singing the Old Bog Road, the only song I heard ma da singing as his mammy was buried down the Old Bog Road in Ballyconeely.

No such thing in Cork – they were talking about a brothel in Spain to which a wee rowin boat set away every Thursday night from Wicklow and returned every Tuesday with some very happy faces, despite the rough seas :)) (Jeez, I don’t half talk some mince at times :)))

Finally on youtube. Regarded by many to be the best version of the late great Tommy Makem’s signature song. This recording was played at the Tommy Makem memorial concerts at the Irish festivals summer 2007, shortly after Tommy died on August 1, 2007. The poem at the beginning is “Requiem for the Croppies.” Feb 6, 1983, At the National Concert Hall, video companion to the album of the same name.

Fanad – John Hughes played in the semi- final v Leeds – indeed he scored a goal.

The sad truth is that it was WW who took Connelly’s place in the final.

  8. Tontine Tim, The Holy Ground was an area in Cobh (where the Titanic sailed from). Its the area where The Ladys of the night took their sailor clients to transact their business back in the 19th Century. Thats definitely it from me for tonight. Will scroll back here some time tomorrow to hit all the links and read any more posts.

  9. Some great poetry and music tonight.

    Thanks to you all.

    My wee favorite tonight is

‘Oh when the Celts go up to lift the Scottish Cup

we’ll be there oh we’ll be there’.

  10. CorkCelt, I heard a story about the Holy Ground, it was wherever Home was.

The Holy Ground was where is Holy to you.

Now it was just a story, I like that story.

    Phylliss dietrichson,

I understand that, but WW coming back in then the decision had to be made,I would had played GC,but what do I know ,hindsight I suppose is a great thing.HH

  12. Doc I can’t keep on saying I’m off to bed and then reply to another post but as you are a Facebook friend I’ll respond and then switch off immediately before I’m tempted again. As I say the song is definitely about Cobh Co. Cork and with typical Irish humour the red light district was nick named The Holy Ground. However like many things usage has changed over the years and your definition sounds great to me.

  13. St stives . When u were on the hibs site , were there any condemnation of , ogilvie , the sfa. Lns. Bryson. Green. And the million others mentioned during the wee bit of bother the bears got themselves into .

  14. That was our unpublished reaction to the re-appearance of Anal Stools last night when he saw the chance to jump in and join the lynch mob against EL. They don’t know I recoreded it…until now….:))) Canamalar’s the one with the high pitched howl. :)))
