Dangers ahead, unimaginable mess and new euphemism

988

I’m still meeting people who haven’t noticed.  Hibernian are on an outstanding run of form, having won their last three games and undefeated in six.  The last reversal they had was at Celtic Park the first weekend in April.  On Sunday we’re playing the team with the best recent form in Scotland; the warning signs are painted in large green font.

They are dangerous up front, Leigh Griffiths has scored four goals more than any Celtic player, including several stunners.

The weight of the world rested on Hibs’ shoulders at last season’s Scottish Cup final, when the stage was set for a century of pain to be wiped away by defeating their greatest rivals.  It was too much.  Now they take the field unburdened and vastly more dangerous than St Mirren, Hearts or Kilmarnock were when they overcame Celtic at Hampden recently.

Odds on Hibs are very generous.

I caught some chat online last night.  “Blackmail”, “extortion”, “imprisonment”, “getting rid of the problem”, “a catastrophe of an intensity that you…. clearly do not appear to understand”, “fraudulent”, “once the genie is out it will have a life of its own”.

What an unimaginable mess.

I think “Been an admirer of your recent work” is bound to become a euphemism in years to come for when something that should never have been said or written slips out.  This is a small glimpse into how the whole thing happened.

Fantastic Q&A with Willie Wallace this morning, thanks to Willie and Winning Captains.  Willie’s recollections of our great times are irresistible.  Reading the book as it came together was a joy.  You’ll love it.

Remember you can start Cup Final weekend by meeting Willie at a book signing at Waterstons’ on Sauchiehall St, tomorrow – 25th May, 46 years on from the day – from 2pm until 4pm.  If you can’t make it you can order a signed copy below.

    Evening folks,

Just watched a wonderful You Tube video on the story of the Clancy brothers

*oh my God that took me back, loved the Clancy’s, bought my first album, “Live at Carnegie Hall”, in a pub one Saturday night in Balloch fae a wee ken dodd folky who’s da told him tae get it oot the hoose, nae wonder “my name is O’Hanlon” etc.

Saw them up the toon in April 1966, ma da got me the tickets and a seat on a bus, me and ma Carolina Danny have a bottle of Lanny but didnae want tae drink it on the bus as ma da’s workmates were on it.

Didnae feel like drinking it in the hall as naebody else was so at the intermission we went tae the lavvy, as we opened the door tae the sounds of the Soldiers Song everyone in there was bevvying.

8 weeks later saw Mr. Zimmerman at the same venue.

    I wonder if they slept?

Or lay wondering about what was coming, did Stevie Chalmers dream of scoring the winner?

Did any of them imagine beating Inter Milan so badly the Inter players were talking about throwing in the towel as soon as we equalised.

We are not that far away IMO, maybe not with this current team but with the upcoming teams that are being grown inhouse, we will have everything we want in a Team. ;)

The biggest mistake made byJock. My guess was one of sentiment,Yogi missed out in Lisbon,it may be hard to believe but thats my Opinion.

  14. GL2

    Re lisbon teddy bear..

I remember a pic of Bobby Murdoch abd John Clark sleeping with the white bear in the big cup.

My dad seens to remember Charlie Gallagher with it but no one knows where it ended up.

  15. Fanad

Big jock didn’t do sentiment. Look at Fergie he learned that and dropoed Jim leighton from a cup final replay. .

  16. Tontine Tim, Had that record too by the Clancys absolutely loved then, Liam had a haunting voice and Tommy Makem an incredible lilt. Still have a few of theirs on my mp3 player, Tommy Makem singing “Gentle Annie” is a favourite of mine. In later life Liam Clancy lived out his life in Helvick Co. Waterford at the time of his arrival there I worked nearby and got to know him well and was lucky enough to be in on a few back room sessions. Hearing a lad like that sing for an audience of about a dozen or so is fairly special.

Re the speculation as to whether there is any special connection between us and Hibs, I would just say that we have extended the hand of friendship on occasion in the past and it has been rejected.

More fool them and their loss.

We don’t need them or anyone else.

We Ourselves or if you prefer, Ourselves Alone.

  18. been looking at a few hibs blogs tonight ,

to be fair the “sunshine on leith” anthem is very very good when sung on masse,

also lots of the bloggers have familiar tags “harp, shamrock and saints”

but my favorites by far at the number of references to Albert Kidd,

I know what you are saying, and I appreciate your point of view, but it has bothered me as wellsince then,I cannot find any other explanation except complacency.George Connolly should had been a shoe in for the final, but I suppose we will never know why he was left out.

Can’t believe I’ve been listening to it for 50years

The sleeve is in a mess and have to put up with a few skips and jumps but still gets an airing when the drinks in and the bloods up
