Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

  1. Thought the weans did well.

McCart, Ajer, Henderson, and to my surprise, Ciftci doing their prospects no harm.

Liam obviously wants to claim a place rather than moving to Hibs.

Janko’s good going forward but will have to improve his fitness if he wants to do his day job as well.

Just watched the replay and it’s young Henderson busting a gut to get back and cover for him while Janko plods back in to the box.

Might be his Belfast hospice pin. He is a hospice ambassador. Gave the proceeds of the sale of the family home in Carnlough to the Hospice but you might not be reading/hearing/seeing that in/on a. Media outlet near you soon.

Guys, quick question…what was the badge Brendan was wearing on his lapel in the post match interview at Motherwell game? My son is asking…

    ====================================================

I believe its a Nothern Ireland Hospice of which he is a leading patron.

  5. Second string against Inter first team and lenient ref, Can’t grumble.

Henderson, Janko, Ciftci and Fassan all showing up well.

Ciftci = Shifty, New player this season, I know he has his knockers but his change in attitude deserves a stay of execution for me, Dembele and Leigh can’t play every game, Maybe this guy deserves another chance.

We don’t seem in any rush to sign up another striker, Brendan may have said your staying big man and show me what you’ve got,

Application is there and his attitude, Looks thinner now as well. No elbows. Using the Sutton/Dalgliesh school of holdin up the ball

  6. The team doing not to bad against far superior players.

Ajer,Henderson,Cifti, Izzy and Christie doing well.

    Armstrong playing very poorly.

Boyato and Armstrong will do well not to be shipped out by BR.

  7. Go tell the Spartim on

Considering they’ve been thrown together probably for the first time vs Inters strongest 11 potentially, we’ve coped half decent.

Sky really are the epitome of hurtin hurtin Huns

    COYBIG QUITE LITERALLY BOYS

  8. Big Shift Key has been good each game he has played this Season.

Keep going Nadir. Celtic Football Club is indeed the Finest in the World.

  9. Overall, a very good first half.

Great first half by Fassan! Janko is doing vey well up against a top class internationalist. Ajer looks very classy and Boyata need games. McCart hasn’t been overawed. Izzy is izzy

Henderson is working very well in amongst a very experienced midfield. They think so too and are dishing it out to him. Johansen is quite effective in there. Armstrong has a good football brain but his feet are letting him down badly.

Christie has been in and out of the game but is doing very well when he gets the ball at his feet. I’m sure he will develop well. Big Nadir has put a shifti in and performed pretty well.

    Happy enough.

  10. Too slow on the trigger finger Wee Bobby.

Given that this is our development squad and we are doing well maybe we should be going a bit Hertz here. After all Inter won’t want to lose any of their first choice players. A taste of their own medicine.

  11. McCart must have stepped on black cat. First half partner, Boyata. Second half partner, Ambrose. He would be within his rights to expect a wee game alongside Toure.
