December fixtures when it all needs to resolve

371

A look at the fixture list will not provide  immediate comfort, we have away trips to Sparta and Milan ahead in the next 10 days, both of whom won comfortably at Celtic Park earlier in the campaign.  The principle positive is that after the team arrive home in the early hours of 4 December, the farthest we travel from Glasgow for the rest of the month is the 10 miles to Hamilton.

We have a meaningless home game against Lille on 10 December and the Scottish Cup Final 10 days later, but that Hamilton game is the only league match in five away from Celtic Park.   This will be our least taxing month of the league campaign.  It is an opportunity to get things right ahead of the Ibrox visit on 2 January, but as we saw with Newco last season, even easy looking games can result in defeats when the heads are down.

If  arrive at Ibrox solid in defence, controlling I midfield with an additional 15 points and a fourth consecutive Scottish Cup win, it is game on again, but I doubt any of us are complacent about those 15 points.

  1. WGS? MON? Rafa? Some have even said Pochettino…

The way I read Paul67’s post was “Lennon’s going nowhere, let’s pray for miracles as that’s the only way we win the 10”

  2. What is the point in Phil being told some info but not allowed to publish it at that time. Is it really to protect the source? Or is it so he can then say I knew that 2 weeks ago, nah, nah, na-na nah.

For what it’s worth, I’d prefer Howe to the O’Neill/Keane combo.

From earlier….interesting suggestion….what’s the scoop Dumbhoy?

The 54-year-old favours 4-4-2, with attacking full-backs, mobile midfielders and two centre-forwards. His sides attack with pace, moving the ball in quick transitions and defensively, they are well organised.

  6. Well if we dont win the league its not the new guys fault, if we can get the right guy with his own staff we might make a better fist of qualifying for the CL the next time we get a chance cause these last few years and I include Rodgers in that have been a waste, we also have spent a relative fortune on players and have no identifiable way of attacking or defending, we just have a group of players and a huge amount of churn.

With respect guys, we are picking teams based on previous reputation, not on current form.

  8. Roddybhoy, How exactly do you chase Dermot Desmond, who holds approx 33 million Ordinary Shares along with his Preferential Shareholding.

Currently the Share Price has dropped a fair bit from its peak of 1.66 to a little over a pound, even so we would have to come up with 33 million to buy his Ordinary Shares if he was willing to sell in a depressed Market, which of course he wouldn’t.

He just might sell at around one pound fifty, so maybe if we could come up with 50 million then it’s game on.

I’ll pledge 500 so all we need now is 49,999,500 .

I agree with you about Frimpong & team selection.

This 19 year old is a good footballer, but slotting him into right back in this current Celtic team is destroying him. I remember his first few weeks when his smile was irrepressible & lit u the screen when he was interviewed. After the St Johnstone game he was interviewed as MOTM on Celtic TV & never smiled once. Lack of competent cover in front of CBs means that opponents simply play behind Frimpong, draw out a CB to cover & exploit the gap he’s left. OR they exploit getting in behind Frimpong & get the cross in – knowing that we are poor at clearing crosses from either flank. On Saturday against Hibs we won only 31% of our aerial duels.

Whether we have a new manager or not we are NOT going to change our playing staff so we will still have to use what we have to start winning games. But any blame being apportioned has to start with the manager & it baffles me when some people want to blame everyone apart from him. The truth is of course that all the people involved have a stake in any blame going round just like they bask in the glory when its going well. It seems from my distance away that some people who should be accepting responsibility are shirking it.

That said, the player culture that NFL told us would have to change after the Prague game is HIS responsibility: The team selection is his responsibility: the game tactics & strategy are his responsibilities: the bench & game substitutions are his responsibilities: the coaching & game preparation is his responsibility. There is a clear disconnect between pre & post game talk & game performances. NFL is either asking players to do things they are not capable of doing or what he’s asking them to do is not working. I suspect that it’s a bit of both but player concentration & focus during games continues to be schoolboy standard – as is seen in just about every goal we’ve conceded this season.

The alarm bells at boardroom level should have been ringing loud & clear after the home loss to Ferencvaros where, in a one off home tie, we fielded a team with NO recognised strikers. Ajeti – unfit, Griffiths – unfit, Kilmala – not trusted, Edouard – Covid. Frankly, that statistic even seems unbelievable as I type it. Christie did score but our lack of concentration at a set piece and our lack of pace in a footrace cost us two goals.

Since then, the board have watched as we have crumbled in all the important games against domestic & European opponents. How they can accept that the current treble treble winners & the richest club in Scotland with the biggest squad should meekly be swept aside by teams we should be beating is something only they can answer.

Many of us have come to our own personal tipping point over the last few months, and some out of loyalty & devotion to NFL still want him to stay in place to turn things around. I respect the view of the latter group but I don’t understand it. THE question that I would want them to answer is “How has a team that looked so good & almost invincible in the second half of last season become so poor this season, such that we have little confidence on a win going into any game?”

We added players & spent more money that we normally do in transfer windows.

We retained largely the same coaching staff.

The CEO has become invisible in all of this & we’re left with NFL to address Covid & fixture issues with the media while still addressing serious performance issues in the football department. Hiring someone to do a stressful job, whom you know has admitted to personal mental health issues caused by stress, then expecting them to carry a heavier than normal load at the club with no apparent public help is a recipe for failure & ill heath. Neil has lost Damien Duff & perhaps that loss is underrated. The team lost Simunovic & Hayes – perhaps their loss is underrated. During the transfer window, some players seemed destined to leave & didn’t. Has that impact been underrated?

What are you doing Mr Lawwell, Mr Bankier, Mr Desmond?

Fundamentally, Celtic are a successful treble winning team who topped their Europa League group who are now incapable of inspiring any confidence of victories in supporters & talk of winning the league is stupid & fanciful nonsense. 10 has become a millstone around our becks ever since we won nine.

I’d settle for winning a few games with competitive & intelligent performances.

    HH

  10. Please tell me their not going to wait until we have absolutely no chance then make a change a bit like NFL substitutions.

Surely they can’t be that incompetent?

  11. Terrifying if we think Roy Keane would “sort out ” the dressing room by shouting at players and thwt wisomehow will help. Massive step backwards. MON was no where near the coaching ground first time around, what makes anyone think he would be doing a full shift in his autumn years

So away and lie in your pish chumpster.

  13. Cornelius

The 3 have their snouts in the money trough, Bankier is a disaster,a whisky businessman what he bring to Celtic FC I havent a clue, Desmond appears distant and disinterested and Lawwell does what he likes as the Board seem to allow him to do so.

Long time voyeur. Last post was complaining about Gerry Creaney sticking two fingers up to us in The Jungle…

IMO the board will do nothing unless we lose the cup final against the diets.

For the rest of us we see an unhappy camp, poor form since the season started and nothing to make us think any improvement is on the horizon. The captain is from immediate memory keeping out at least 3 players all younger, fitter etc – so are the 3 poor players (bad recruitment) or is it that the manager has bottled out dropping him for fear of failure? The defence has been getting run ragged but the opponents have to get by at least 6 in front of them before they reach them.

New broom with the Sandy Shaws to see the opportunity to achieve history and not the fear of losing it.

Do we have a better starting 11 than them? Yes

Do we have a better first team squad? Yes

Utilised to potential – which a good manager does and we can get the season going.

I am neither deaf nor Blind…

So you ADMIT that you will only support a Celtic manager when the team wins ?

You obviously have a real problem understanding the difference in having a go at Celtics manager, which is perfectly okay in my Book, if any so called Celtic fans are unhappy at what they are seeing….but to accuse Neil Lennon of being a ” Puppet” is Disgraceful.

I asked you ” When Neil ( The Manager/Boss) gives instructions to EVERY Celtic Player, and those players try to carry out those instructions, does that mean that ALL those Celtic players are also Puppets”…

You have failed to answer a simple question..

Likewise ” Would you call Neil a Puppet to his Face” ?…you have failed to answer that question also, but I think we ALL know the Feckin answer to that.

“ This 19 year old is a good footballer, but slotting him into right back in this current Celtic team is destroying him.”

Before Jeremie Frimpong started to come under the sieve spotlight it was his colleague Greg Taylor whom ‘we were destroying’ at left back.

See us, see Celtic, see Neil Lennon destroying players. We bought Greg Taylor to play in Keiran Tierney’s role, we bought Jeremie Frimpong to play in Mikel Lustig’s role.

    Did we buy well?

Clarion calls for the pimpernel El Hamed to finally fill right back and deadline day loans suggest not.

  19. BSR,

As a team without identity and shape we are destroying players and I expect that’s part of the ‘rebellion’. Rampaging left wing backs brought up as a LB or rampaging RWs trying to learn to defend. Both leave the poor CHs exposed as they find themselves in the wrong end of the pitch and in front of the CHs you could drive a train as the midfield runs around with little discipline, chasing the ball and knocking into each other.

Players have moved from looking goosed to being fed up to probably being rebellious for change.

When we won 5-1 at Ibrox 3.5 years ago, JPT had the scoreboard from that day as the background on his official Celtic FC media account for quite some time. You will get a polite response and nothing more. Every last one of them are embedded in the old firm.

  21. The board will be sitting thinking, we came back in 2012, we can do it again. Its only 5 points. The fans are hysterical.

They are literally clueless and disconnected from reality. Only when the fans turn on them will Neil be dismissed. The trouble is this time there is no fans in the ground to make them feel the pressure. They cant look round and see how many are there and how many are missing as it usually the catalyst for change.

It looks a long and gloomy road ahead.
