Defence need to play-up for their keeper

812

First the treble then the double slipped through the net leaving Celtic absolute certainties for the inaugural Scottish Premiership title, but with only a couple of higher aspirations to aim for.  Fraser Forster is closing in on Bobby Clark’s Aberdeen league shut out record, which if he keeps a clean sheet at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, he would be able to eclipse 31 minutes into the visit to Tynecastle on 22 February.

Neil Lennon called Saturday’s defeat unacceptable but it would be just as unacceptable to concede to St Johnstone at home this weekend when so close to an all-time record.    Saints have scored only one league goal away from home (at Firhill) since winning at Tynecastle on 2 November last year.  Notwithstanding their four Cup goals at Forfar on Saturday, you could not wish for a more goal-shy league visitors.

The manager was rightly critical of his defence on Saturday so will hopefully use this weekend to ensure they are ready to play up for their goalkeeper this Sunday.

One of the highlights for the Celtic community last year was the incredible Ben Nevis Huddle, completed on the snow-capped mountain in June. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 28 June. Applications opened on Friday and there are only 77 places left (big mountain but limited safe standing capacity). Go here if you want to get involved.

  1. Still gutted at the poor performance on Saturday.

However am also raging at the article in the Aberdeen Evening Express by Anthony Joseph showing a video clip of the Aberdeen fans singing ” Northern lights of old Aberdeen” and calling all 3,000 as heroes. !!!!!!!!

Pity this journalist did not video the vile constant chants of ” Lennon , Lennon get tae **** ” which was chanted all during the game. Other poor chants about Jimmy Saville relating to us. NFL being booed as he picked the ball up

Also sad that no other paper made reference to it. Only last Monday Keith Jackson saying that Dons fans don’t have a sectarian problem. Oh really ???

Were you at the game on Saturday?. Where are the other reporters opinions on this

Reporters were writing all last week on the mindless moron who chucked a coin at NFL

So it is OK for 3,000 Dons fans to chant this guff for ninety minutes.

Celtic are quick to apologise for some of our fans singing. Will Aberdeen FC issue an apology. Will someone in the MSM make a comment

    I’ll not hold my breath

  2. I don’t want to start an independence debate but if Scotland does say “YES”, would the Sky contract have to be renegotiated? Or would Sky have to set up a Scottish-based company to be able to bid for the TV rights?

  3. is it apt to use the word ‘Huns’ to describe Aberdeen supporters these days?

if we consider the behaviours that epitomise how the word is assigned to a group of people – ie over-arrogant, mob mentality, thuggish tendancies, vile chants etc then all of these definately apply to a large section of Aberdeen fans, especially their away support, so if the shoe fits….

  4. The Battered Bunnet on

I enjoyed SFTB’s post on the last thread – 11.20am-ish if you haven’t read it yet.

Many people have commented on the absence of competition since Rangers went bust.

Few now recognise or acknowledge that there wasn’t actually a competition. The game was bent. It was a sham. We imagined it was a competition, but in reality it was a corrupt, staged managed illusion. A fraud.

The Game and its supporters were the mugs, ripped off by mendacity staggering in its duration and extent, and ultimately sold out by those charged with responsibility for protecting the Game from abuses.

It is a tragedy that part of the legacy of that shameful deception is to be seen in the diminishing ‘connection’ between Celtic and our supporters.

For those who believe, wishfully or sincerely, that Scottish football needs the ‘competition’ that a phoenix Rangers will provide, respectfully, you are building your hopes on two false premises:

    1) During the past 2 decades and until their demise and liquidation, Rangers were never a competitor. They were a shameful perfidy.

    2) This new Rangers will not provide what you seek. Their business resource cannot sustain their avarice.

Unless you want a return to the days when our “competitor” required a £15M subsidy each season from tax payers and creditors, days where all clubs bar one are held to the rule book, there will be no ‘competition’ in Scottish football of the sort you seek.

Sorry to bear the bad news.

  5. Had to leave straight from the game on Saturday to head down to the Borders, just back in now so haven’t had a chance to read back. Like The Token Tim I can accept defeat by a better team in a competitive match (which Saturday’s was), but I hope someone has mentioned the set-up of the team and the impact it had. I glanced at the stadium clock and said to my mate “Right, that’s 20 minutes they’ve all had to see we’re being overrun in midfield so let’s hope it gets sorted pronto”. Of course it didn’t and the result was that Aberdeen bossed the middle of the park all day. I thought Lenny had dumped the notion of trying to play with two wide men, leaving the middle two automatically outnumbered. In addition we had Sammy doing his disappearing act (after his fantastic pass to Stoksey) so not only was he not contributing to the midfield he wasn’t contributing to the forward play either.

  6. well said The Battered Bunnet…..we are Celtic ….the Celtic support will be there through good and bad …let the other side provide the Huntertainment….they are deid…with a capital D……..braw …

  7. The recent Celtic performances are simply a reflection of what is happening in the stadium. Its half empty because many can’t be bothered. Its quiet because those that do attend can’t be bothered. Its a gluttonous malaise – ‘the league’s in the bag’, ‘we’re out of the CL’ ‘what have we left to play for?’, ‘we’re out of the cup!’. I remember prior to 2000 when winning the league was the be all and end all – what’s happened? We’ve become spoiled kiddies.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd are playing better football and encouraging fans to attend matches because they have some hunger – they want a trophy, they want to get better, they want to compete. At Celtic, the malaise off-field spreads onfield and then even the prospect of playing for a EPL relegation candidate appears more attractive.

If you want positivity on the pitch, there has to be some off of it. The songs have gone, the fans are going. The Board may be turning in a profit but they are also overseeing the slow demise of the club

  8. LiviBhoy - God bless wee Oscar on

Celtic had about 3 shots on target on Saturday.

Is that acceptable at home against anyone?

  9. After all Neil has achieved in recent years, he may find himself wondering what he has to do to keep everyone happy.

Basically Neil, you must win a domestic treble every season, not lose any league games, play at least 4 youth team players per domestic game and reach the latter stages of the champions league. You must do all this while playing edge of the seat football, no matter the playing conditions or strength of the opposition. You will also lose your top 2 players at the end of every season to mid table EPL teams to help keep the record profits coming in for the PLC.

It can’t be that difficult Neil…

  10. I had a season ticket through the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s, went everywhere home & away including europe. Dont know how many bank loans i went through to go to away european games.

I stopped going because my priorities changed and now watch games on SKy etc.

Through these years we all knew there was something not right about decisions made against us by suits and refs but we couldn’t prove anything & we were told we were paranoid.

Last year we (i mean scottish football not just celtic) had a chance to do something about a team who stole & cheated and i was on the verge of buying a season ticket again because integrity was going to beat the cheats & my bit would be to financially support scottish football.

I never bought a season ticket because in scotland the word liquidated means something different to the rest of the world.

A team with the same name, strip, players, managers & supporters are being allowed to play at ibrox as if nothing has happened.

Now we have celtic supporters brain washed into talking about when we play them again i know the games a bogey.

When is someone in authority going to put an end to this nonsense.

Jeez, If I was Paul, I’d flounce and tell ye all to Eff Off. The poor divil is running the blog, probably costing him money and certainly a lot of time. Tries to lift the depression by introducing an incentive to next weeks game and gets pilloried. I know its only crumbs but I for one hope we do keep clean sheets for next few games and claim the record plus the points.

A regular poster and mail correspondent also suffers, and as he is a good friend of my favourite uncle,I suggested the same on Saturday.

He feels in fine enough fettle already to hit the bar, though hopefully not wi his big toe!

There are worse things in life than gout,of course. But from what I am told,if you suffer from it,you will refute the previous sentence.

I wish we kept a clean sheet on Saturday, then we’d be through to the next round.

Hope we keep a clean sheet every game and then we’ll at least draw every game.

Clean sheets are the best way to gauge the performance of the defence where our best players happen to be. Even against inferior opposition it is incredible that we have gone so long without conceding. Well done celtic.

    Hh.

  15. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

I see that Phil is expecting a busy week ahead

maybe we do still have something to look forward to this season

WRT the folks who think that the double is beyond us, or we are spoiled if we expect the double, or god forbid the treble, are yees huving a laff.

Not only did we ourselves a disservice we gave sevco a mamoth lift at a time when they needed it. Pretty much in line with our ongoing reluctance to put our foot on the sevco throat..

and as for the fholks who think that sevco drawing the coatbridge magyars was a fix, it shouldnt have mattered who they played against, because at the end of the day we were there to stop them. Now we rely on others instead, (maybe debtors)

  16. So really TBB, stop sitting on the fence, what do you really think about competition in Scottish fitba when the deid team existed?

  17. A few on here have said that they will walk away from Celtic if certain things come to pass .

Does that mean forever? Is it possible to be an ex Celtic supporter? Nevin doesn’t count.

The fans do not play games. Why were the players not up for it? We have toiled at home for large parts of the season but seem to batter the goals in easier away. Why is that? The players let everyone down on Saturday. If they had been playing attractive football the place would be full. Sevco/Rangers fans don;t care about the style of football they never have. They pack the place out as long as they are winning. Celtic have to play with a certain style. It’s not an easy job. It’s one of the toughest in football.

Not sure when “clean sheets” started to be counted in minutes, but if it goes all the way back to Bobby Clark, well that must me forty years or so. Is it just me or does a clean sheet not have to be for the entire game, no? Szczesny “kept” a clean sheet for 38 minutes against Liverpool on Saturday, pity about the five goals he let in up until that point!

  20. Forget the huns omnishambles,jt becomes a convenient sideshow for some.We have our own elephants in the room to deal with now.

  21. We all want more competition. Yes, that’s what we want. Give it to us.

    What’s that?…we lost 2 1 on Saturday? OMG

    Down with competition!

THM Clean sheets are quantized in terms of games but if two keepers keep clean sheets for the same number of games, the record as in how long since a keeper conceded would come down to minutes.

    13:30 on 10 February, 2014

In the aftermath of a bad defeat, our blog is full of anger and sadness, reflecting the disappointment of an opportunity missed to win another trophy. I feel, however, this time the mood is much worse.

Talk of replacing NFL from a few of us is to be expected, but I feel the criticism is way OTT, and to suggest Roy Keane as his replacement is plainly ridiculous.

The biggest concern is the dramatic fall in attendances. I would have expected an almost full house for an attractive cup tie such as Saturday’s. The board’s behaviour towards the GB and its attitude to the OB Act and FOcUS have sickened many fans. The general economic situation is also a major factor.

The board can do nothing regards the latter issue but it is IMPERATIVE that they engage with the support to tackle the other issues. The disconnect between the board and the majority of fans is a big worry. I would suggest that if steps are not taken by the board to address this, and attendances continue to slide, the directors could be held to be negligent in their duties to protect shareholders’ interests.

It seems likely that CP will be like a morgue for the rest of this season. The nightmare scenario for me would be failure to reach the CL group stage and the better players sold off to balance the books. What would that do to ST sales?

I urge the board now to engage with fans, tell the politicians to GTF with their criminalisation of our support, clamp down on the thuggish stewards at CP and not allow the MSM to set our agenda.

It’s healthy to debate these issues on a forum such as ours but the personal attacks on those with whom we don’t agree and figures like PL are counter productive and don’t take us forward. Eg It’s all very well to say, “Sack the board!” Who replaces them?

We need to build a measure of trust between fans’ groups and the board. I recognise that some matters must be kept private but there should be more transparency on others. If the board did actively promote the OB Act, whilst telling us they didn’t, WTF is that about?

Now is the time to take stock, get ourselves together and move forward as one.

  27. The Tribute Act

If RIFC took on Leggo and Tin Foil Heid, why no legal action against @Pmacgiollabhain if his stories are inaccurate & hurting Sevco?

Save King waffling in The S*n today predicting another share issue. There is no time left to organise a share issue, but King knows this.

Translating Sevco speak- King doesn’t want fans screaming that he let 2 Rangers clubs die and did nothing but talk a big game.

Dave King talking up another share issue lets him claim that he was ready with his readies but the spivs wouldn’t take his cash.

Truth is that King becoming a shadow director of RIFC-Sevco will trigger phoenix provisions and violates the Companies Act.

Why Dave King cannot rescue Sevco- page 7 of this summarises Companies Act http://t.co/A3r1lYoBSs

  28. !!Bada Bing!!

Speaking of elephants in the room…..

A Pianist starts playing a tune in an open bar, which causes the elephant present to burst into tears.

“What is it, do you recognise the song?”

“No, but I recognise the ivory!”

  29. Clean sheets are thrilling against European giants like Barcelona,Milan etc.

Against most Scottish teams it usually means not a lot to the fans.

Minnows v giants comes to mind.

Clean sheets over team and youth development is folly.

We talk about team strategy and building for the future and if we abandon this for an unimportant record then the coaches and management are being shortsighted.

The remainder of season should be used to integrate projects/potential and refine playing systems so they can be implemented properly.

  30. The Tribute Act

“(directors of liquidated firms) cannot be involved in…a business… using a name which is so similar it suggests an association”

  31. Aberdeen and Dundee Utd are suddenly so good they are twenty one, and more points behind Celtic’s ‘game plan’.

They flop against lesser opposition in the main competition, a one off is their only chance, on Saturday Aberdeen took it.

  32. Why should we forget about what is happening at ibrox as its a sideshow.

Maybe the elephants we have in our room are caused by the sideshow.

If the liquidated club were told they were no longer alive how many supporters would have done what i was going to do and buy a season ticket again after 12 years?
