Defence need to play-up for their keeper

812

First the treble then the double slipped through the net leaving Celtic absolute certainties for the inaugural Scottish Premiership title, but with only a couple of higher aspirations to aim for.  Fraser Forster is closing in on Bobby Clark’s Aberdeen league shut out record, which if he keeps a clean sheet at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, he would be able to eclipse 31 minutes into the visit to Tynecastle on 22 February.

Neil Lennon called Saturday’s defeat unacceptable but it would be just as unacceptable to concede to St Johnstone at home this weekend when so close to an all-time record.    Saints have scored only one league goal away from home (at Firhill) since winning at Tynecastle on 2 November last year.  Notwithstanding their four Cup goals at Forfar on Saturday, you could not wish for a more goal-shy league visitors.

The manager was rightly critical of his defence on Saturday so will hopefully use this weekend to ensure they are ready to play up for their goalkeeper this Sunday.

One of the highlights for the Celtic community last year was the incredible Ben Nevis Huddle, completed on the snow-capped mountain in June. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 28 June. Applications opened on Friday and there are only 77 places left (big mountain but limited safe standing capacity). Go here if you want to get involved.

  1. Not been on since the weekend as I was truly gutted at the performance on Saturday……and not just by the team!

It wasnt so much the defeat that embarrased me it was seeing a magnificent stadium like Celtic park half empty for a cup tie, why all of a sudden are we not turning up? Surely we cant pick and choose, guaranteed had that been a CL game it would have been packed to the the rafters!

Try recession, and demise of arch enemy…….I take it you have noticed half-empty stadiums across Europe…..

    —————–

Germany, standing areas, allowing the youth to be vociferous.

    Within reason that is.

  3. Strange but true.

I really enjoyed Saturday’s match but was disappointed by Celtic’s performance and the result.

I don’t see that as being contradictory.

I want a competitive SPL, with the likes of Aberdeen, Dundee Utd or any others making a right good game of it. Say like our home fixture V Ajax or Karagandy this season.

Naturally I want us to win, so while I enjoyed a close match, My disappointment came at us failing to do our best on the day and ultimately losing, thereby forgoing an opportunity for future enjoyment, possibly on into May, with a SC triumph.

The deid team do not factor in the equation. They will become a factor only when, through sporting merit, in some time in the future, they are able to function as Aberdeen, did on Saturday. Until then they are a third tier irrelevance.

I look forward to Saturday, where I hope for a better performance from a better balanced Celtic side.

It may be a slow progress to the title but it will be the title.

Confirmation of Celtic, the Champions of Scotland.

What’s not to like? I’ve already experienced too many seasons over the past 50 years where where we haven’t been champions.

For the future, trust in Lenny, or don’t. Support Celtic.

Take Saturday’s 11, add Lustig, Chas, Biton, Leigh G and Tony Watt. Add a youngster and decent midfielder and striker. A Champions League squad IMO.

    The ole Christmas tree formation,

    FF

Mikael, Efe, VVD, Izzy. ( Adam, Darnell)

Broonie, Chas, Stefan. ( new ghuy, Kayal, Biton, Henderson)

Jamesie, Kris. ( Pukki, new ghuy, Stokes)

Tony Watt. ( Leigh G, Balde, new ghuy)

  4. I’d rather have Celtic the League winning team, than Celtic the cup winning team. Too often in our Scottish Cup winning record, the prize was a face saver, for the main deal. Celtic have ‘outgrown’ the League and Scottish cups, the glory hunters don’t care, and stay away. The League cup and Scottish cup have been minimimalized, because our focus is elsewhere, with a clear path into Europe.

  5. A couple of posters complaining about the subject of this thread written by Paul67 (on his blog)

There have been 2 articles posted since the defeat on Saturday, both of these probably cover what you’re looking for

Should P67 just keep writing new articles ad finitum regurgitating the same points from that game?

I doubt there’s much to be said about Saturday that hasnt already been covered by posters in the previous 2 threads.

  6. glendalystonsils on

Missed the game on Saturday, but the previous Sunday v St. Mirren I was worried that some of our players might trip on thr tumbleweed that was blowing across the pitch.

There’s something dispiriting about hearing COYBIG being sung by sixteen people and their dug.

  7. With the constant negative propaganda and the hostility that NL has to endure its amazing that he wins any games nevermind the league who knows what stuff the players have to put up with away from Celtic Park- especially those who dont know Scotland- i think the players look scared to try but im probably wrong and have no evidence-so maybe im just paranoid

  8. Attendance on saturday given as 30,000ish

How does this compare to previous seasons live TV cup games either at parkhead or hampden

I would reckon its about par for the course is it not from what i can recall, just this time we pre-empted the likely crowd and closed some of the stadium accordingly

  9. Just popped on to say, some excellent posts this morning from TnT, SFTB, Big Nan, Kev Jungle, but jeezo this lead article really is a belter…….All hail the cleen sheet!

“The money spent on London is eye watering. Always has been.

I remember being “dug up” about the cost of The Scottish Parliament, for instance. And yes,it was way way too high.

    My response?

    Four words-”British Library,opinion please.”

Unsurprisingly, few English people were aware hat it cost over £500m. Seems it went largely unmentioned in the press down here.

Strange that they could list he cost of every widget at Holyrood, huh”

    Well done on the podia…

It is very true, for some reason people expect projects in London to cost 10 x as much and see it as a benefit for the Nation. They also see many of these as funded by the private sector when in fact huge amounts of Public money surreptitiously goes into it.

The LDDC is a case in point, it came out that they paid 450Million for the Lime House link – two miles of road, but no one in the public domain knows how much it cost over the 18 years.

BTW – Remember your gout “vimto” tip, well I was getting some gyp and was in a convenience store, so thought I’d give it a try – no Vimto but they did have a Polish Cherry cordial – now I’m no Alchemist and don’t try this at home but the symptoms were alleviated – who’d a’thought:-)

You’re right to say that the National cup competitions are of lesser importance to Europe and the CL specifically.

However, the disappointment and anger felt by many after Saturday would clearly suggest that the SC, a day out in the sunshine in May to complete the season with a double, is worth winning.

The fact that there is no European competition to look forward to only compounds the disappointment I feel.

  13. Paul

We have fallen along way when you suggest we should be looking to keep a clean sheet at home to St J

In all my years supporting CFC -back to the late 60s/early 70s-stopping goals has never been high on my agenda

This season has been very disappointing – there is no way round that

Partly the fault of the board/scouting team/ manager in not replacing the people who left in the summer

Only VVD has remotely improved the team

This should have been a season of regeneration and development but that has not occurred

    Instead we look dangerously adrift

Saturday was disappointing on many levels

Having to close the upper tiers

    Team selection

    Team tactics

    Substitutions

If Lenny wants to continue long term he needs to reconcile the demands of European football with the very different demands of domestic football

Given our budget we should be able to quality for CL group stages most years as we come against poorer team in the qualifying ties

We will win the league for the foreseeable future due to the lack of a sustainable challenge

He needs to do better in the cups -that means learning from his past mistakes

Saturday suggested that that was not happening

If he wants to leave then he would go with my best wishes as he has had so much off the field garbage to contend with -if it was me I would definitely want put before the Zombies reach our league

Make no mistake -should that happen -things will be very ugly and I’m not talking about the way they look!

Saturday suggested to me that even a limited team like the Sheep -when well organised and up for the game could quite easily beat us

We are far too soft -especially in midfield and upfront

That needs to change for Scottish football

  16. Fin75 @ 1222 hrs,

good post and sort of sums up my current attitude.

many moons ago, a Celtic defeat saw me almost greetin and railing againt the world and my friends and family most.

    Thankfully I grew up.

Family, work and friends and life in general (not necessarily in that order) are a much higher precedence now for me.

And as Cults Bhoy said earlier, whilst still have my season ticket (since the Jungle’s last stand) and now my Bhoy has too, i wont prioritise the game over other things any more. Its mainly CL or “big” games that I now attend.

Like it or not, I like my football to be competitive whether playing or watching and as I told erstwhile poster of this parish James Forrest aftre the Morton cup game, unfortunately the odd game apart – like Saturday or the CL – we do not have true competition any more in Scotland.

Im not looking for the huns to come back and be that competition incidentally. I want us to move to somewhere, England, AtlanticLeague, wherever, that provides us that competition.

At that point, I doubt I’d be the only one trying to make better use of my season ticket than I currently do either.

    I can handle that.

I just dont get upset any more.

This clean sheet and unbeaten record in league does absolutely nothin to prepare us for our next important match. 2nd round qualifier in champions league in July. That should be our priority now this season is over. Not clean sheet records. Talking about clean sheet records is daft after conceding 2 goals 48 hours ago.

Im not excited at all with clean sheet records Goals are part of football in years to come nobody will care that we broke a record for no goals against but will remember we didnt win any of the cup competitions we entered.Do you think in years to come Morton fans will say we kept a clean sheet at Parkhead ? they will say we knocked Celtic out of the League cup football is about winning games and a 4-3 win is usually more exciting than a 1-0 so stop trying to salve a poor season with clean sheet records as it does not wash. h.h.

  30. I think the team is missing having an ‘edge’ just now, and that is probably one of the main reasons we lost in the cup. The league games are a bit easier, when we play against the other teams they have a lot less to play for. Of course, there are 3 points to be won, and you get to say you beat Celtic, but when you compare the 3 points, to getting to the next round of the cup, its just not the same. When we play a team in the cup, they are much more ‘up for it’. Should our players be motivated, of course they should, but its human nature that the smaller team are more motivated.

The league is not competative. (No, I do not want them back.) I don’t know what the answer is. But we knew, and everyone else who pays even the slightest bit of attention to football here, knew we were going to win the league. So its boring. Not just for the fans, but the players too. So when you win fairly easily, again, and again, and again, and then have to play an actual ‘must win’ game, against a team that is actually more motivated, its hardly surprising we lose more of these than we would like.

Its almost the same for the Champions league, albeit, we are the smaller team, playing a bigger team. But its the worlds premier competition, so yes, we possibly are more motivated than the bigger teams, but they are still viewing the game as importante, as a must win, and not taking it lightly, either on purpose or even just in the backs of the players minds. So we come into a Champions League game, against a bigger and probably better team, that is still motivated, and we have no ‘edge’, we probably won our last few games without getting into top gear, or even close. Then we suddenly want to turn it on for this one big game? It just doesn’t happen like that.

I do worry about the Champions League qualifiers, we will be playing very motivated, smaller teams, who have a huge prize to play for. I think we got through, and probably will get through, because the players will want it enough. (I am assuming that some players who don’t really seem to want to be here, will be gone, and we will bring in some more players hungry to play in the Champions League.)

I certainly would not be in any hurry to get rid of Neil. No way. Just look at how hard the msm are trying to get him to go, that must tell you something. BUT, Celtic do need to do something, anything, to get more competitive games. (That anything, doesn’t mean putting morals to the side, and getting them back, it means looking at other sports, not just other leagues, and working with the SFA, if possible, to try something radical, or new. Going to the EPL works for me, but it probably simply isn’t happening ever, or soon anyway.)

Yes, we need to do something. Something needs to change. But changing the coaching staff, will have the same effect as changing you brand of butter. If not actually make things worse. We need to change Scottish football. Don’t know how, but it does need to happen.

  31. HT

We are told ‘we are craving competition’ but get ‘angry’ when Derek McKinnes came with a game plan, and Celtic got mugged,in a one off game?

You and I, were at the St.Mirren game the week before in a poor 1-0 win, Aberdeen were the best side to visit CP outwith the CL this season, the Celtic game is limited.

Sunny May days are for sometimes for second prize winners, nobody gets too worked up about The Copa Del Rey, except Spanish also rans, even the FA is rarely won by the champions of England, and is almost as devalued as the Capital One cup, where big team play reserves.

Celtic champions at the expense of cups is a theme, – but I’ll take it.

  32. Richie #TeamOscar on
