Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

Don’t think I’ll see many planes land today. Fog in ole Clydebank. Can’t even see the car park.

  2. OK, so 10 minutes pass and East Kilbride is now being covered “as we speak” in a dense and cold looking fog.

Auldheid, further to your post last night about The Scottis Football Monitor and the press. Video Celts have an article about R C Ogilvie and TSFM on newsnow Celtic.

They have a copy of a letter from Ogilvie asking for renumeration for a loyal employee from the trustees.

Jobo, there’s a dew as well as fog in East Mains.

Much better day weather-wise down here. Pale blue sky and cold but no rain or wind.

How better are matters on CQN? Hope we are in better fettle than of late.

  7. Good morning to all the Celtic fans on here.

I have lurked on the site for years now and very occasionally make an input.

So it is with a sorry heart that I have decided to stay away as I am sick and tired of scrolling past all the non Celtic stuff and the vile and abusive personal remarks that some people think are justified.

I have said before that all I am is a Celtic fan, one of many many thousands across the world.

The club I love is going through a transition and whether it is for the better or not I will be there at the end of it and the beginning of the next one.

Two of my grand- children from here in Ipswich came with me to watch us unfurl the flag.It was their first time at Parkhead and they had a great day and cannot wait until the next one.

That day will not be very soon as I do not want them to hear the sickening booing at HT and FT.

When oh when did this become a part of going to see the tic. It is alien to me and others like me who have never and will never boo a Celtic team no matter what. It is hunnish and has no place at Paradise.

That is another reason for me to say farewell to the site as the language and attitude of many on here is also hunnish and does not belong to a great site such as this.

Thanks Paul for allowing me to communicate with fellow tims and I hope that the site will get back to the original script it was intended for.

  9. Well said tractorbhoy, you and I have watched a lot worse Celtic sides than this one, but like yourself I will stick by them and in particular give Ronny a decent chance to prove himself.

“The greatest fans in the world” make me despair a lot more than the manager or team does- though Stokesy and Commons were pushing the limits on Sunday!

Sadly the “success now or sack him” attitude is too prevalent in society in general.

I don’t think thats the point – If you want something (in this case Celtic wanted Keane) you need to be flexible – the irony on this (if Keane has summarised the events accurately) is that Celtic/Lawell were the arrogant ones – very inflexible

Now I am reading between the lines now – is this because Lawell did not want a strong personality that would undoubtably stand up to him or was it because he wanted RD and he knew give RK a take it or leave it deal that RK would tell Lawell were to go ??

I was never comfortable with RK – a definite risk !!

But the point is (and i’m exaggerating the point here) what if Mourinho was interested ??? is it take it or leave it Jose

If Celtic want a top manager and the same applies to top players Celtic have to be flexible

    67ECW

  17. So we now know for sure that RD was recruited to fill the number 2 job and that therefore JC is a substitute no.2. We have no-one more senior at the club who could be considered to be a football man.

Too many decisions are being taken by non- football men including it would seem signing footballers.

As stated yesterday a senior football person with a grounding in Celtic – to fulfill a director of football role – would help all parties at the moment.

The Board who have created this mess.

The management team who are badly in need of some wise counsel.

The support who are rightly frustrated about just about every aspect of the current situation.

    Davie Hay anyone?

  18. 67 European Cup Winners

Why is it assumed that the manager and the CEO wouldn’t or couldn’t work together to make Celtic better, that also takes us down the road of assuming that somehow PL can manipulate the current manager.

Roy Keane always spent a lot of money in England as a manager and if he was told that was not the case at Celtic and he couldn’t work within it it, is that the same as take it or leave it? Those are his words, whereas it could also have been said, this is how it is..

Semantics for sure but if we’re talking top managers Roy Keane doesn’t fall into that category for me, I think we dodged a bullet with him.

I personally think the whole Roy Keane story was a smokescreen if Donut had wanted him really he would be there now PL works for Donut.

Who was the last top manager Celtic had, who was the last manager where the support went YES YES YES, Martin I guess, Celtic don’t do top managers, why that is is a whole other story..

Good point, well made. And while I focussed on Keane I completely agree with your wider point about our board’s apparent intransigence in moving beyond their costings within their money ball strategy.

In my view that intransigence almost cost us £15-20m with the ‘baw hair’ qualification into the CL group stages last season and an actual £15-20m loss with the ‘baw bag’ attempt from earlier this summer.

Also Livibhoy is one of many who comment on how we ignore homegrown talent. That’s inexplicable to me.

As we watched our team predictably go up both wings on Sunday, to deliver poor crosses into a largely empty box…..would we have taken Gauld, Armstrong and Robertson in exchange for what we’ve paid out on Balde, Bangura, Pukki, Scepovic and bitton?

    I would.

Every year we have the same story of players Celtic “missed out” on or “let slip through their fingers” the three you mentioned being the latest, here’s what bothers me, what if Celtic are not a big enough of draw to stop these players going down South to earn big bucks and the chance of a bigger better gig??

    ————————————————————————————————————-

He may have new ideas but does he know how to implement them?. You don’t start by talking about developing a pass and move team playing with a high tempo and pressing high up the park and make your first signing Jo Inge Berget the very antipathy of what you espouse. He spends £2.3m. on a striker he has never seen and leaves him on the bench when we are a goal down to Hamilton Accies and we end up with a centre back and goalkeeper leading our attack in the dying embers of a desperate game. Give me strength.

The very idea that we should give uncritical support to a very bad manager is the stuff the kellys and whites came out with during the 80s and 90s. It might have been just about ok when it cost two bob to get into a match but these days fans pay a lot more in relative terms and have a right to expect a lot more.

The lack of football people on the Celtic board is nothing new. But at least even Desmond White had played the game at senior level.

I am more worried about the figures on the board who seem to have more in common with TSD than Brother Walfrid.

  24. Morning all,

Cold, grey and blowing a gale in Denmark. If you’re interested like.

After all the post match analysis I want to give voice to what really pushed me over the edge on Sunday. After a couple of months watching dodgy internet feeds I stumped up for a legit Celtic tv subscription. It looks like I’ll be in DK for a good while so it seemed sensible.

I am now paying something like twenty quid a month to hear one of my all time favourite Celtic players come out with gems like “Aye the two boys lunked (sic) up well there.” “LUNKED”!!!! and the only way he can end a summary is with “at this moment in time”. I love Tom Boyd but please someone get him on a course for communication skills.

As for the commentator (Whose name I refused to remember) God help me. “Gordon just dinks it Ambrose. Ambrose just runs it up the wing and just taps it inside. Brown just runs on to it. Izzy just traps it, just beats two men and just puts it on a plate, Griffiths just makes a hash of it”. It can’t all be “JUST”!!!

    And breathe.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Starry Plough – I don’t know if the Manager and CEO (Lawell/Keane in this case) could or could not work together – but if you asked me to bet a £ I would wager on it not working

And yes I would assume there is an interpretation variance on what RK thought and what PL thought – “take it or leave it” could well have been “this is how it is”

Lawell did not want competition or confrontation (Ronny confirms that for me)

Also I’m not saying RK was/is the answer – I’m with you “we dodged a bullet” but we dodged a bullet because of Lawell inability to be flexible

And thats my point – wether its “This is how it is” or “Take it or leave it” either way you will struggle with that recruitment policy

Current players and Manager confirm that for me
