Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

    Auldheid , I will try again

    I just thought it was worth pointing it out.

    Ronny has the lowest points total after 8 games for 16 years.

    I think that says it all.

    =========

    It says whatever anyone wants it to say.

    It is only reflective of whatever meaning folk give it at this point in time.

    =================================================

    How can it say whatever anyone wants it to say? It is the lowest points FACT (and it is FACT)

    ================

    That in turn is a reflection of pre held views about what Celtic mean to them.

    That improvement is required is clear. That RD is not capable of delivering it is not.

    ========================================================

    How can the lowest points be pre held views?

    What evidence on past managerial experience gives you confidence other than blind loyalty that he can deliver?

    ============================================

    Why don’t we just hold off judging a guy in a business that most of us are amateurs in and wait and see how it works out?

    ========================================================

    Is that not a “hit and hope” analogy? Is that really acceptable to you? Surely we should be a better plan than lets just wait and see?

    ===============================================================

    Things in football can turn around in 45 mins or have we all forgotten?

    I’d rather have a guy in charge with the courage of his convictions than someone ready to sway with the wind.

    That is what leaders do.

    =========================================

    Leaders do indeed have courage in their convictions and are strong( what did Ronnie say about loan signings again?), but they should also have the ability to adapt and learn whilst listening to others. I would suggest that the best leaders influence and make others better around them, without the need to dictate or force. Does Ronny have the power or the influence for this?

    Auldheid, I have been in the company of a number people who work in the Scottish press in the last thirty odd years.

    Some have no liking of the SFA and the Ibrox crew but they know they could only go so far in criticising both institutions or else their editor would be on their case.

    The old bad stories about us good stories about the brethren, sell more papers. I understand that being financially sound to sell more papers but there are editors & reporters who hide behind that and use any excuse to have a pop at us. Jackson last week being the prime example.

    Lindsay at the Evening Times is one of the worst as is that Falkirk fan, Waddell. He was one of the reasons I stopped buying the Sunday Mail over ten years ago.

    Leckie is another one. He is a St Mirren fan but doesn’t half enjoy having a go at us when the SMSM have got so much material available at Ibrox to get their teeth into. Unfortunately, it may never happen unless Resolution 12 does the job.

    You and the others involved in getting Resolution 12 have my gratitude for trying to get the truth about all the misdeeds done.

    Mark Guid used to play in goal for Celtic Boys Club. I remember his name being mentioned in the old style Celtic View years ago.

    hunskelper 2252:-

    I guarantee you that if the Huns come swanning into the SPFL and are treated by Celtic as the same as the old club with honours and history intact then there will be no chance of 45,000 season ticket holders at Celtic next season.

    There might be some lapsed season ticket holders that come back for the bigot fest but for many like myself who are already scunnered at the excessive downsizing, footering about of kick of times, the padding out of the Celtic team full of on-loan rejects, then a welcome mat rolled out to Sevco with the Celtic board treating them as Old Rangers will be the last straw.

    —————————————————————————————————————–

    Not forgetting of course that ST sales were in a state of steady decline long before the demise of the huns. There might be a slight re-bound next season if Sevco make it to the top league but it won’t be anywhere near what some folk think. It’s also likely that the board will hike up ST prices to try and recover what they lost in CL revenue this season. If they do that they might be lucky to sustain this season’s ST sales.

    Great point, but the majority of our supporters bus, and the ghuys in the immediate vicinity of my seat, are now concerned every time we take the field. I can understand that feeling playing against the likes of Barca, but against lower positioned SPL teams, or even Hamilton Accies, who deserved their win. How far do we have to decline before someone takes action. All the money in the coffers will disappear rapidly, if someone does not stop this decline, which will, undoubtedly increase ten fold. jamesgang, I was pissed off yesterday after a five hour round trip drive and what I deemed a poor result for Celtic.

    I’ve seen posts from a number of self confessed non contributors, guys who openly admit they never go to games, never buy merchandise, have no share in the club, hate the club, hate the manager, hate the PLC, hate the players, in fact there’s nothing some of these tossers like about Celtic.

    I’m sick of reading their repetitive pish, Celtic is not for them, Celtic is for the supporters.

  20. Celticrollercoaster

    How will we know the answer to your valid question if we do not give him time.

    As an example RD relief on Stokes and Commons v Zagreb to do the necessary.

    They did it once and that was enough..

    It’s only natural he relies on both v Hamilton and they let him down.

    Now imagine he had left out both v Hamilton with same result. He would rightly be getting pilloried for it.

    So after 2 games what has RD learned? That Stokes and Commons are inconsistent or that he needs more games to be sure?

    Time has a purpose. It stops everything happening all at once.

  21. When BTM was our manager, I honestly thot he would do good, he was doing a very decent job till we were cheated out of the game at the bigotdome, I seem to recall Thompshun coming out after and say he got it wrong, just an honest mistake, then Walturd gave tha call, we need the cash to survive…and operation feck you Celtic came into being, it was always in force, but they took the blinkers off, they went for it big time, and poor old Tony just had to take it on the chin.

    Now I firmly believe, rightly or wrongly, that he was told to take it on the chin.

    Point is, he wisny that bad, hi wisny that good either, but we were never winning that league come what may.

    Have we only played 2 games this season?

    Stokes, Commons, Brown, VVD, Ambrose, Johansen and so on have all let RD down. RD has also played some out of position that are not natural to them. Has chopped and changed the line up, been inconsistent in many tactical areas.

    At least he seems to have learned KC is best in his natural position rather than striker. Took him how many games though to realise that?

  26. TET

    Yes we created chances yesterday as we have done in previous games.

    I’m not blaming Ronny for VVD choosing to make an attempted block with his wrong foot when Hamilton scored yesterday.

    I’m not blaming Ronny for Stokes missing two glaring opportunities.

    I’m not blaming Ronny for Commons missing almost as good a chance.

    However, I do hold him culpable for the huge gaps we had in midfield as a result of his formation.

    I do hold him culpable for the lack of crosses into the box from our wide players because he persists in playing guys on the wrong wing.

    I do hold him culpable for our lack of creation in the middle of the park because of his focus on width.

    I do hold him culpable for taking off Guidetti, our single striker, when we’re 1-0 down.

    I do hold him culpable for playing Wakaso when he’s never Celtic class in a month of Sundays.

    Having said all of this I so so hope he changes our misfortunes around.

  28. Gordon Strachan wasn’t good enough and had a broken dressing room when he took over.

    Neil Lennon had less problems with player loyalty but he had a very rough start, and was to some Celtic fans still the cheap, unambitious option when he took over.

    Ronny’s rough start was as entirely predictable as is the fan’s response.

    Many saw him as a board puppet who was recruited on the cheap and who would never be allowed to sign his own men.

    Did some fans actually glow with satisfaction when his team struggled to find form, because it proved their conspiracy theory and allowed them to say – see ah telt ye?

    Was Ronny welcomed fulsomely by the “best fans in the world” or was he viewed with suspicion?

    Did Ronny get the same support that David Moyes got from a sizeable chunk of Man Utd fans?

    People were shouting for John Collins to be on Ronny’s team and yet very few had the slightest idea about what that would mean for the team and the club.

    John Collins lost the Hibs dressing room because he set them impossibly non Scottish standards, and forget Paul LeGuen, that is the issue for us.

    Celtic’s recruitment has not recovered from unearthing the diamonds of Henrik and Lubo by apparently shopping in the bargain basement. We still rummage round the car boot sales looking for another player just like them. The thing is that both of those players were known by our new (then) European managers. Wim for Henke and Dr Jo for Lubo. They were not uncovered by Scottish scouts, or our network, or even forced on us by an anxious agent.

    Networking realistically in Europe can unearth some good players but the personal touch is often the key element.

    And of course, Wim and Dr Jo were viewed with disdain by many fans when appointed, because neither of them had the credentials to please Celtic’s disaffected fans.

    Ronny is very likely to come good at Celtic, but can the fans wait that long..
