Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

  1. Anyway, off to bed but hopefully some may have decided to look at all the circumstances around our season to date.

I am sure the people at the club have.

I just hope those among us who get carried along in a wave of hysteria don’t hound the man out until he genuinely deserves it. At the minute, he deserves to stay on.

Dearie me. It’s not a stat ‘against’ Ronny. If you read my post above I’ve said I’m desperate for him to succed as I would be with any Celtic manager.

I’m watching the team and I’m concerned. If you’re happy with what you’re witnessing then good for you. I’m not.

  9. RD started from a weak position, unknown, untried, no track record of any note, headhunted from a weaker league than our own. Some guys wanted him out as soon as he began, the rest would sit back, hope, and give the man a chance.Anyone in his position would jump at the chance of managing Celtic. The crux of the current predicament is who appointed him? Why would PL appoint a manager of limited experience, and unproven ability? Before anyone says PL doesn’t appoint managers, have a wee look at DDs interviews last week, cheap soundbites from a guy who doesn’t know who we play from week to week.A guy who couldn’t be bothered travelling an hour and a half from Perthshire last week to watch the team.PL runs Celtic from top to bottom, and he’s put a rookie in charge of a Club, within touching distance of a £20 million jackpot.Rank bad management, the most important guy at any football club is the manager, I’m sure PL will beg to differ. He failed to support Ronny with freedom to bring in his own signings(Berget aside),let alone his own Assistant Manager.IMO Ronny is out his depth and looks clueless, looking on from the touchline. We are all Celtic supporters,(I know…..),we want the Club to succeed in every aspect, on the field success being paramount. I fear the guys who were undecided have made their mind up that one more defeat and it’s curtains . It’s not Ronny’s fault, he shouldn’t have been here in the first place.I truly hope someone reposts this back to me in 6 months time, when we are beating every team out of sight, playing great football, nobody would be happier than me.

Charles, the book Gomorrah is based on is a great read. It shows how big an influence organised crime has and how takes advantage of ordinary people to their detriment.

The Camorra even had people in Aberdeen according to the book.

    Bourne, ya part-time part-timer ye.

Bobby Murdoch, thanks. The hard time Dr Jo got not only got from some of us and the media, irks me.

From around October 98 to the following March, we played well. Henke & Viduka linked up very well. Lubo was injured when we beat the Mothers 7 nil or 7 one at Fir Park and did not help us in the run in.

  12. HT

We could and should have scored at least eight { 8 } goals agin HA yesterday.

That IMO is not a team not making chances.

I agree with some of your other points re playing players out of position, and leaving a massive hole between the defence and the forwards.

But FFS, had AS taken half of the chances, we would all be singing from a different song sheet.

RD can NOT be blamed for the players failings………………

Or in some folks eyes, he will be to blame, cos he is asking them to get fitter, be more professional and play a system they can’t get their thick heads around.

Well, IMO, if they are that thick, they should think of a career change.

I just thought it was worth pointing it out.

Ronny has the lowest points total after 8 games for 16 years.

I think that says it all.

It says whatever anyone wants it to say.

It is only reflective of whatever meaning folk give it at this point in time.

That in turn is a reflection of pre held views about what Celtic mean to them.

That improvement is required is clear. That RD is not capable of delivering it is not.

Why don’t we just hold off judging a guy in a business that most of us are amateurs in and wait and see how it works out?

Things in football can turn around in 45 mins or have we all forgotten?

Sure improvement is needed but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Both players and management will respond better to encouragement than criticism. Time we gave some.

Rubicon, thanks for the recommendation of the two French series.

Charles, the guy who wrote the book is an investigative reporter, who abhors the camorra and took some risks getting to know those involved. I think the author’s name is Roberto Saviano or Soriano. His name is in the credits for the show.

Its a pity reporters here can’t show the same level of courage & morals to investigate Murray’s business pratcices over the last twenty six years.

  28. I’m reading back and at page 6 just now. I see a recurring point about this team winning the league last year by 29 points and asking do we think we will win by that amount this year under Deila.

Well, here’s a question. Do you think we would win the league this year by 29 points under Neil Lennon? We’ll never know but my guess is that we would not. Last year the defence clicked. Forster, VVD and Efe along with a midfield designed to protect the back line meant that we were miserly to the point of record breaking run of clean sheets.

Now, I would contend that Gordon, Denayer and VVD are better than the aforementioned trio. But I don’t think many would expect them to emulate or better the record.

I don’t think comparing to last years margin is a reasonable yardstick.

Firstly, the situation at Celtic is very much like that of ManU last season. I happen to think Moyes was harshly stiched up. Van Gaal on the other hand has been given quality players to build with.

Deila has inherited some good, some bad and brought in some good and some yet to be established as bad. He, or at least we, also cleared many players that nearly everyone would agree were dross.

The reason I would persevere with Deila is that I believe in what he says about the type of football he wants. However, there are two problems to overcome. Firstly, too many of the players he has do not, or cannot play his way. Needs two more transfer windows to sort that out.

Secondly, his coaching experience would almost certainly not have extended to playing against teams who almost always play with 10 men behind the ball. The exception would be Dundee United and look at the score when we played them. So he needs to learn how to break down stubborn defences without exposing the defence to quick breaks. He can learns this by reading the coaching manual, seeking advice from other managers and by trial and error.

I expect him to work it out. And to deliver the league with a 10 point gap.

    Did I say expect? I meant hope…
