Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

  2. This blog has been ,on the whole, disgusting today.Totally hysterical.

I am ashamed to be a Celtic fan today.A total witch hunt.

The huns and the SMSM must be laughing their asses of at us.

I know facts might not be what you all want, but you will get them anyway.

With game in hand we are 3 points off the top of the league.

We are top of our EL group with a home game coming up.

We are still in League cup.SC still to come.

How the fek is this failure.

You have all been moaning about the standard of our league”One horse race”etc. As soon as a team has the audacity to beat us,you all start screaming.

If I was RD I would walk.Leave you all with your wee parochial dreams of success.Forget Europe,as long as you can beat the hun on occasions that will be enough. No vision,no hope,no dreams of improvement, while the rest of Europe laughs at us.

We have a guy with vision,a guy trying to make us better.A guy hoping to get us back up to CL status, for Christs sake we need it,but he loses a couple of games and the burning torches are out.

    Celtic fans,my arse.

I seem to remember Ronnie saying he must have looked at over 1000 players on tape since he came to Celtic..

Neil Lennon was a very good Celtic manager and a very good Celtic player.

He endured unprecedented levels of hatred.

He deserves our respect and gratitude.

The insults on this page are a disgrace and make a mockery of the tolerant ethos of the site.

    Frankly a disgrace…

I understand what you are saying, but can I ask you; do you find 6th position to be acceptable at this point in the season in a one horse league for any manager of Glasgow Celtic?

If so, can you justify why?

If not, can you understand why perhaps some persons may be unhappy/worried?

I don`t recall Neil Lennon being involved in a fight in a nightclub. Nor am I aware of the clash with fans that you speak of. I go to every home game, many away games and I didn`t miss many games at all during Neil Lennon`s time as manager. Don`t recall ever seeing him having an altercation with any fans, bar of course John Wilson. I wouldn`t have regarded Neil Lennon as being a “coarner boay” had he lamped him.

He did use swear words once during a game of football when he called Jim Goodwin a moderate euphemism for female genitalia. I believe that such industrial language is part and parcel of football and I have heard posters on here refer to Goodwin by the same term. Are they all “coarner boays” too?

Maybe you prefer your managers to wear brown brogues? Or maybe you have the same approach to managers as you do to Celtic players i.e. you vilify those who have had the temerity to ask Uncle Peter for the going rate for the job. (c.f. Commons, Ledley, Samaras)

Here…….i did post my thoughts about Denayer as a holding midfielder a few days ago……before the Zagreb game if my ole memory serves me right!

I just thought folk would probably listen to you!

    —–

Mhate I don’t even listen to myself!

I’ve thought from Game 1 that he’s a great footballer but not a brilliant defender.

Often not goal side. So tackling from behind too often. Can tend to lunge in too much. And too short (without the timing in the jump to make up for it) to be a top centre back.

But again on Saturday he moved the ball out defence with poise and pace and pinged some stunning cross field passes.

He could add hugely to our midfield and lessen the bombscare quotient in the sieve?

Hamilton, sorry my post intended to highlight the fact Dr Jo saw where we had problems and because of there being no transfer window, he got in two players who got the club and both did great jobs for us.

    Apologies again.

Some people don’t like subtitled programmes but it doesn’t mean to say it’s a rubbish show.
