Dembele signs for Celtic

249

Brendan Rodgers first signing for Celtic has been confirmed as striker Moussa Dembele (19), who was out of contract at Fulham. Capped up all French youth levels, Moussa was subject to a £6m bid from Tottenham in January, but Fulham chose to retain the player in their fight for Championship survival.

Sought-after players are seldom available out of contract, and even less-seldom come to Scotland, so this is a bit of a coup for Brendan’s Celtic.

I spent most of the day telling people this one works on paper but that I was concerned at his age. Then I realised he’s a French contemporary of Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman (4 weeks older than Moussa). I’ll put my ageism back in its box.

Welcome to Celtic, Moussa, and well done to everyone who pulled the deal together.

  1. Hi Paul67,

With the proviso that I have never seen ohur young French man play this seems like an excellent signing.

When BR took over my thoughts were, it would not only be the underachievers and underperforming players who need worry about their place.

I believed that Brendan would be looking for greater pace and more physicality that many of our performing players had.

This signing suggests this is what a future Celtic side will look like.

Yet, he still fits the value criteria that PL was interested in when completing a signing. A player of his and I hate to use the word – potential – can have a great career at Celtic and recoup our investment.

Still my hope is we are signing for the long term and that the youngster goes onto be a Celtic and French great.

Welcome to Celtic Moussa Dembele – when you get to grace the holy ground of Celtic Park in a European game you will know, as I’m sure you do already, that only the most arrogant of Englishmen could suggest it’s a come down from Craven Cottage.

I don’t normally wish people a great celebration on the 12th of July but i will make an exception for Moussa (especially next year when I hope he will have at least 3 medals to decorate his birthday cake).

    Bienvenu Moussa

  3. But who signed him….was it Dermot? – was it Peter? – was it Ronny before he left – was it Iain Bankier, was it even Lord Livingstone, or was it actually Brendan?

Only time and level of performance will determine who will held be responsible, or, lauded, for our latest addition.

I wish him well and a quick start.

You’ve got laugh at the way Mousa’s signing is being conflated with Scepivic leaving. The meeja’s desperation is risible.

Over the last 5 years we have bought some strikers !!!! (well they said they were strikers) we all know the list !

But given that the Championship in England is a real tough league and he played 47 times, scored 17 goals, he is 19, capped by France at every level except senior, I cannot think of a striker that Celtic have bought in the last 5 years (on paper anyway) that seems as accomplished as this kid

Welcome to Celtic Moussa and well done all at Celtic for getting this done

  19. Superb bitto business for Celtic. He is young and developing fast. From what I’ve seen he is strong on hold up play, peels off with pace, links up well with striking partners and bangs in goals of all types. Looks exciting all round striker. Now for a solid tough tackling ball playing midfielder.

We have been told that Celtic are ‘extremely confident’ of signing Joe Allen when Wales Euro championship campaign is over.

  22. Can someone please help.

    There are 2 Moussa Dembele’s.

I can find no evidence that the one that we have just bought was subject to a bid in Jan 2016 of £6m from Tottenham.

All the articles I can find are about the other Dembele and date back to 2012.

I have watched several videos of the boy ,and have to admit that what I saw wasn’t that impressive.I know, video evidence can be dodgy ,but it normally flatters the players.

    His videos don’t.

I suppose I’m looking for some reassurance that other top scouts rate the boy we have bought.

I have lost all faith in the scouts who have signed our recent supposed goal scorers .

  24. Bada bing. Said at the end of last season that Paddy will be a full time Celtic player. Mainly because I don’t see him making it in the EPL. That may change.

Also, Dembele this signing ticks all the previous boxes that were ticked with victor, vvd etc. Young, not played many games and we’ve done the business very very quickly.

    Strategy still the same?

As I have said, the strategy canny change but how we implement it can. This seems to be the start.

  26. Another side show of Pre season will be how Ajer adjusts to the obvious step up in quality and if Christie, Henderson and Allan can make an impression.

Christie and Henderson I expect to. Allan I’m not sure.

  27. MASTY@6:40

I think you will find that as in the cases of Scepovic, Cole, Kazim Richards, Pukki, Baldie et al, if Moussa does not ‘hit it off’, it will be someone from Peter Lawwell upwards who will ‘carry the can’

I agree with THOMTHETIM@6:41 – Celtic did sign him – just as they signed all of the above, and, Hooper, Ki, Forster, Wanyama and VVD.

Over the past twenty years I have been able to increase the value of my season ticket on a number of occasions. I have done so because I believed that all associated with the running of Celtic FC have done so in good faith and for its benefit.

Mistakes and errors of judgement have been made, of course they have, however we operate in a very difficult football environment and no one associated with running the club has ever purposely damaged the club.

There are those however, some of whom frequent these pages, who would harm the club gor their own political agenda, and have actively campaigned to so do.
