Describe him as a billionaire

Today, the Daily Record give a remarkable admission on how they report goings-on at Rangers.  Allegations have long been made that some in the old media replaced journalistic analysis with note-taking at the foot of PR agents.  The Record not only admitted this practice, they made a headline story out of it.

Apparently, when asked by the Record about Rangers’ owner Craig Whyte’s wealth, “PR gurus” said, “Describe him as a billionaire”.  At that moment, the legend of the Motherwell born Billionaire took life.  The claim was never interrogated by those present.

Under this cover, Whyte breezed into Ibrox without any of the analysis outside the Celtic online community of where his funding came from, and pitched Rangers onto the path they are now on.

At Celtic we get proper financial information on what’s going on at our club – on time, but we have been fed hoary old tat like “Where did all the Seville/Aiden money go” as though there was any doubt on where our money goes (mostly on wages, before you ask).  Feeding distrust in a club causes harm, but what causes more harm, distrust or utterly ignoring potentially damaging facts about a club?

It wasn’t quite a Mea Cupla from the Record today, in fact, I’m not sure they realise the admission confirms their role in the whole matter, but they also put in print today what has previously scarcely been mentioned outside the Celtic online community, more on this later.  Welcome to the ‘news’.

For the ‘record’, the CQN community were first to describe Mr Whyte as a Thousandaire.  What, still too high?  Mea Cupla!

That’s actually a scene from outside the Chinese national team training camp at the ole Oriental Cup of Nations. You-know-who has only gone and tweaked his hammy!!

  3. Sydney Ti, I have to agree with a lot of what you say in that poor financial and business decisons from Celtic have allowed our rivals to take 3 titles, and perhaps stave off their inevitable financial ruin. Debt has been repaid to the detriment of the team, I still think Shane Long on the pitch rather than £6m cash in the Bank would have had us further ahead at the moment.

However, as BMCUWP says, we have to learn from mistakes. We can only hope that when our board have made the wrong decisions, they done it for the right reasons. That is forgiveable. Particularly if we do go on and learn from them. This window isn’t over yet.

Mr Whyte on the other hand appears to be making the wrong decisions for the wrong reasons. I’d happily give up 3 titles if it means the end of them now.

Regardless of how they account for the purchase of players, a five year summary should be pretty close to accurate.

  5. Jackson on Talksport ruling out any possibility of “I can’t believe it’s not rangers” FC entering at any other level than SPL.

Make no mistake, we face a real war to prevent this from happening. Full court press from the media underway right now.

Over the past 5 years, Celtic have made a profit of £177k from player trading (excluding this season) so no matter what way you want to spin it, almost all incoming transfer fees have been re-invested in new players (and that doesn’t even take into account wages, signing on fees etc).

Are they sure it wasn’t describe him as a “billy boy, wi hair.”

Anyway wasn’t it nice of Craig whyte (of the rhyming slang fame) not to deny being a billionaire, if it wasn’t true.

Yet he wants to sue the beeb for their documentary which was true.

  10. Keef Jackson on talksport,” more revelations” in tomorrows DR. Oh and Andy Gray is worried lol.

  11. Just listened to Talksport and DK being interviewed. He seems to think the SPL can’t survive without the huns due to TV deal and they’ll be allowed straight back in as NEWCO, indicated there will be more revelations tomorrow. Does he know something we don’t or just usual talking pash???

It’s quite amusing that you use the words ‘poor’, ‘financial’ and ‘business’ in that summation when describing our board.

Would you rather our board took the decisions of those south of the river, given their current financial health and likelihood of retaining a sustainable business?

    A few scattered thoughts.

If the huns go into admin this week (i.e if Jelavic fails medical and with that wee bug maybe not or fails to agree personal terms)

What happens to the clubs that are still owed money on their players ? What happens to those players registrations ?

Would Wallace be packed off back to Hearts for example ? Bocanegra back to France ? etc.

The Jamboes have already indicated how desperate their plight is with regards the taxman but they have been paying the taxman.

The SFA would hold the registrations but what is their remit ?

So the SFA can literally decide Hearts ultimate fate as well in a few weeks time by how they handle the Wallace situation ?

We could be about to witness a situation where the head of the SFA Campbell Ogilivie is the top man in a dispute between the Jamboes and the huns .. where he has personally presided over in another capacity ?

A capacity that might yet well see him in court charged with being involved in helping a company evade tax ?

Would Campbell Ogilivie be aware (if there) were two sets of hun contracts ? I reckon he must have. The time scale fits perfectly

I hope as soon as the proverbial hits the fan that our team of crack and expert lawyers. Preferably lawyers that are not so publicity hungry are all over this

And you’ve hit the nail on the head. If Rangers hadn’t operated in the way that has led them to this point, would they have won those 3 titles? I think the chances are they wouldn’t. Despite what some think we have been de-coupling ourselves from Rangers and the ‘Old Firm’ and consistently doing what’s best for Celtic Football Club. Even when that meant being involved in joint sponsorship deals because unfortunately what’s best for us is also what’s best for them but that’s just a downside of not paying heed to their business.

I put a bottle of champagne in the fridge last night (a bit plebeian I know, but I couldn’t find the ice bucket).

In the cold light of the morning I think I’ll postpone opening it (the bottle, not the fridge)until the newco huns are in the third division.

If the outcome of all this is a newco huns straight into the SPL, they’ll have survived, and it will be Celtic that has died.

  21. There should be more in the DR tomorrow. There was ALOT left out of the original article that couldn’t be stood up prior to the presses running. They will be spending today doing just that!

It’s worth pointing out that when you spend £5m on a player, you do actually spend that £5m (or at least it gets earmarked as being spent), whereas when a club spends £5m on one of your players (or a collection thereof), you do not actually receive the £5m, in fact you’ll be very lucky to receive £4m after the player and agent fees are removed (remember transferring a player when he wants to stay is effectively breaking his contract – you need to provide a payout).

Or have you taken that directly from our accounts, as opposed to figures ‘quoted’?

Agree on Ki – only Sammi & Joe have been better in our European matches imo. However, he hasn’t quite progressed as I expected him to from last season, and if we have to lose someone, I would hate it to be Sammi (our best player) or Paddy (I might just cry).

That’s true. On this day of all days, I was just indulging in a little “lazy journalism” by using the STV figures. Presumably the figures STV used are from the accounts and mention total income, although without further analysis it is impossible to say if it took into account additional fees you mentioned.
