Devil in the * detail over Whyte shares

469

Breaking news!  Craig Whyte agrees to sell his shares for £1*!!!

So the story goes.  The * is important.   *He’s agreed to sell his shares for £1 if a CVA is agreed.  Coincidentally, this decision comes a day after Ticketus inform journalists (and perhaps Mr Whyte’s briefs) that they will sue the Rangers owner for £27m.

Of course, if a CVA is agreed, Ticketus still own the tickets for the next three seasons they bought from Rangers in the early months of Whyte’s tenure.  They therefore cannot pursue Craig Whyte.  Get a CVA – get Ticketus’ lawyers off your case.

Channel 4’s very well informed, Alex ‘Tomo’ Thompson, who appears to have spoken to Mr Whyte tonight, reminds us all of the crux of the matter:

“And then that leaves the floating charge Mr Whyte has over Rangers – effectively another large separate financial stake in the club and I can reveal this is still to be negotiated away somehow. This is where the tough-talk has still very much to be done.”

Despite the headlines, it appears that Craig Whyte remains….. The Only Show in Town.  He’ll assist a CVA but the “tough-talk” over the stadium, his real asset, has still to take place.

Let’s not mention the chances of getting a CVA past HMRC.

  5. Good morning from a overcast Brussels ; flying to edi later today as the countdown is on to the demise of bmi ( although ba will sort of save them ).

Talking of demise brings me to the rangers. Nobody in their right mind is going to the person who failed to close a deal to save rangers and failed. They will be lynched.

Brian Kennedy et will quietly fade into the background ( just like Sir Minty himself ) , hoping nobody notices them and craigy whyte takes the hit.

I had a quick swatch online and even Iain King sports editor of the Scottish Sun has stopped the PR frenzy on behalf of his club. It really is beginning to sink in and their gullible followers will soon wake up and smell the coffee too (although they will need some help with mono syllable words).

When this army of hatred is pointed towards a target by Alistair , Traynor et al it will be dangerous for anyone close to the action. Duff and Duffer may become targets, but they are only in Scotland every 2 weeks. I don’t expect them to be in Glasgow again after they take the spl money 2nd place money for their ‘shift’.

I do not expect the wages to be paid. I will help out an employee of that club with a small bonus for some great work done for me.

Good contribution last night by Paul to the rubbish that we pay our licence fee for.

Good letter in the Courier from a Dundee reader:-

May 10: If Rangers reappear as a ‘newco’ in SPL it will seem SFA condone tax evasion

Sir, – The purpose of sport is to promote values such as good health, social inclusion and participation, friendship, sportsmanship and fair play. There should always be an inextricable link between competitors’ ability, honesty and integrity and the principles of right and wrong should never be sacrificed just because of someone’s commercial interests.

Glasgow Rangers’ current position is because they sought to gain an unfair advantage over their competitors by spending tens of millions of pounds on transfers and salaries using other people’s money which they could never realistically hope to repay. At the same time they failed to pay money lawfully owed to HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenues and Customs) and some of their other creditors.

If things happen the way I think they will, (a ”newco” Rangers is allowed to play in the Scottish Premier League next season), I think the UK Government should take the attitude that if HMRC cannot recover the full debt from Rangers they should hold the Scottish Football Association liable and take steps to extract from it the full amount owed.

The SFA is the governing body in Scottish football so it is ultimately responsible for the way all organised football competitions in Scotland are conducted. It has a duty to ensure all competitions under its jurisdiction are competed for with the utmost sporting integrity. That duty overrides their own and their members’ commercial interests.

The SFA also has a duty as governing body to do absolutely everything in its power to encourage all member clubs to pay every penny owed to HMRC on time.

If it lets Rangers off the hook (by allowing a ”newco” Rangers into the SPL next season) not only would the SFA not be encouraging one of their member clubs to pay its debts — they could be seen to be actively discouraging them from doing so by, in effect, ”condoning” Rangers’ non-payment.

The SFA went public with efforts to stamp out social evils such as religious bigotry, racism, homophobia, improper betting activities and performance- enhancing drugs. So what about paying taxes?

Yes – in fact it was a great point.

I think Paul was saying that the other clubs shouldn’t be asked to vote on anything until the results of the SPL investigation into double registrations are published.

As if I am not looking forward to the whole day enough, to have my son with me to see us collecting the trophy, we will also get to see the Thai Tims on the pitch at half time aswell!!!!!

What Paul Lennon (I think is his name) and Reamonn Gormley RIP have done with these kids is amazing and the reaction of the wider Celtic family has shown what we are all about.

Brother Walfrid and the rest of our founders would be so proud.

    Hi all.

Just a wee post for some of the long-established CQN community.

I have a fairly mundane office job but on occasions I can escape the shackles of my desk as I have to go to various parts of the country for meetings. Such an occurance happened three weeks ago (I’ve not been able to post since) when I travelled from sunny Tyneside to Northampton.

I shan’t bore you with the details of the meeting I attended but on leaving the room, the chap who I met said to me in his Scottish accent something along the lines of…

“My family history is Irish and with a name like yours I guess yours is too.” He then asked if I was a Celtic supporter which I again confirmed and added my role in Tyneside No1 CSC etc.

“I don’t suppose you go on CQN?” he asked. “Yes I do. I’m St. Martin’s Bhoy, I don’t post as much as I’d like to but Paul has been kind enough to let me write a couple of articles for the magazine.”

The reply came back that he did not post much now either but did I remember seeing “McGrain in Spain” on the blog? “Most certainly” said I. We decided to grab a quick pint together and share stories before heading our separate ways.

Yes, I went to Northampton a couple of weeks ago and met “McGrain in Spain” and he was asking after many of you. He rattled some names off, nearly all of which I’ve forgotten – sorry – but I do recall Kitalba and Celtic First being two of them as well as our host. I am happy to pass on that he is in fine form.

Maybe not the most amazing event but a thoroughly enjoyable one!

One wee footnote, we met on April 23rd and as we sat chatting about all things Celtic over a Guinness, a squad of locals who had been out celebrating their Patron Saint Day gave the pub a rendition of “no surrender to the………” as they dragged their knuckles along the floor.

Two Tims in middlle-England merely looked at each other, took a drink, laughed and counted our Blessings.

If you’re looking in “Mr McGrain”, Paul67 sends his best and I’ll speak to you soon.

    Hail! Hail!

Whyte sells his shares for a £1 to a “consortium” ?

    What I believe.

    1) IMO, this was more than likely arranged before Whyte’s purchase from Murray.

    2) Ticketus are the “consortium” & the way the deal was initially structured was in essence their long term investment in Rangers. They knew the money invested was safe, as they would eventually own Newco Rangers (Who know’s with no PAYE paid this year & the money from Jelavic, they may already have most of their money back already?)

    3) For being the patsy what does Whyte get? Well either a substantial sweetner in his hip pocket or with his floating charge over the stadium. Perhaps his part in all this has always been to be the landlord?

This was always my view from the outset.

Now? Rangers old co will cease to exist, Scottish football will bend over backwards to welcome a Newco & the media will continue to spin this as a mere blip in the history of the game. Sweep, sweep, sweep just as it’s always been in our backwards thinking country.

My only comfort in this whole charade is the dual contracts & the punishments that should follow? However we’re already hearing whispers that any sanctions from the SFA/SPL will be on the Oldco. Newco apart from a few minor punishments (if even that?) will in essence get off Scot free, will play in the top flight as a debt free strong Newco. UEFA at this point you would think? would have to get involved & threaten Scottish football with sanctions. However which clubs would really care about a European club &/or National team ban from major competitions? Only Celtic would care but we only have one vote.

I hope I’m wrong but if all the above is even 50% accurate then our game is and always will be a disgrace but I guess we already knew that.

We should have found a way years ago but please Celtic the time is now to get out of this stinking corrupt league.

    Hail Hail!

  25. Big Nan, an interesting idea to pin the SFA with resposibility for this mess. Normally I’d argue that no, it is 100% RFCia but there is the small matter of CO being party to the arrangements at RFCia during the time in question.

Now if a club or business is held accountable for the actions of it’s members, surely there is a case to support the argument that the SFA could be held accountable for RFCia. They can’t claim ignorance, at least one member, the leading member knew very well what was going on.

I’m sure a good lawyer could make some mileage on it….
