Doing lots right at Youth level

671

Delighted for the Celtic Youths, who won the Under-20 league for the fifth successive season.  Youth football is not skewed in favour of the wealthier clubs in the way first team football is.  Celtic will be able to afford better coaches and scouts, but wage levels at this age are broadly consistent across the board, so that five year stretch is an indication that we’re doing a lot of things right at development level.

Greg Dyke’s review of English football this week drew an incredible level of condemnation but it’s central thrust, how to translate 18-year-old talent into first team stars, remains a challenge.  Especially at clubs competing who recruit to compete at the very top of the European game.  Celtic chose to send many of their top Youths out on loan this season, one of the suggestions Dyke’s report made.  We’ll see how productive this proves.

The final week of the season saw the Youths need two wins, against Rangers* and Dundee United Youths to deny the boys from Sir David Murray Park snatching what would have been a significant title.  While progress has been patchy for their first team, Youths boss, Gordon Durie, has narrowed the gap at the top better than the other Murray Park coaches.  If and when they can afford to get rid of McCoist, don’t be surprised to see Durie step up, I hear he’s impressed for all the right reasons.

*occasional use of the word “Rangers”, “Airdrieoneans” or “Elvis” without the prefix “Newco” or suffix “Costello” does not infer that the original entities to bear those names are currently in existence.  Both football clubs were liquidated, Sevco Scotland changed their registered name to Rangers after administrators of the old club changed and released their name.  Clydebank changed their name to Airdrie United, and then to Airdrieoneans.

Pump it up.

Hope everyone one attending the Hootenanny this afternoon has a great day.  My chances of getting there and remaining intact is diminishing by the minute.

    Paul67,

    Hope you are well,

I have to disagree on your blog today.

Our u20s should be congratulated, but the real test is how many of these 19/20 year olds will be first team regulars in four five years at ages 24/25.

Sadly if you look at the U20s from 5 years ago who started this impressive 5 in a row run, the answer is zero.

One or two have shown glimpses, but if our youth policy is going to work, we need at least 1 player / year to make the breakthrough , and , in terms of producing first team regulars our youth development is no better than it was 20 years ago.

Maybe we focus too much on winning, maybe expectations are too high, maybe the best talent perceives it is too difficult to breakthrough at CP , I don’t know .

Personally, I feel that if we never won another trophy at youth level over next 10 years, but produced 6/7 starters in first team, I would be delighted

These words however, from the man who de facto has ownership and control of Celtic, create a context in which ‘the occasional use of the word’ appears to be more a glimpse of the Board’s true feelings than a slip of the tongue.

“Rangers are a fantastic club with a great history. They will, in not too long a time, be back in the SPL. I have no doubt about that.

“And they’re needed for Scottish football because of their following, the size of the club and especially their history. We certainly would like to contest with them every week. We believe we have a better team and management structure.

“For us, it’s disappointing that they are not there but that’s decisions by the various clubs and leagues and we accept those.

“Rangers are one of the great clubs in Britain and we have to acknowledge that.

“They are a motivation for us to go along and beat them in every Old Firm match, so we miss that opportunity.”

Quite a bit of booing at Easter Road.

  5. Don’t think they drop starry, do they not play off against the winner of the First Division Play Offs.

  6. Well done to the young bucks…………

Delighted that the future is bright and green.

……..once the dust settles I’d free “McDowally” from his “ranjurs hel”l and get him back in the fold coaching the yoofs………..he was very well thought of before his lapse in judgement.

    In other news………

    wee davie,

….guid……………………………… his title and……………….. the titles he bought for the Klub must follow.

In other, other news…John Collins as No2???.

….I hear his management style has had him called worse……..

Thankfully Celtic don’t need a rookie.

    Good post.

All week post after post was about signing numerous young players from other SPL teams, who wouldn’t IMO get into our strongest starting 11 so at best they’d be squad players. What is the point of that? Either promote our youth players or get rid of the set up.

    ——

“I can’t claim to know the reason but my guess would be they are generally seen as a extremely smart kind of shoe and have been for decades, so as we are obviously a better class of people… it would seem the choice for us.”

Only the 1 star after Rangers Paul67 ?

By my reckoning we have mis managed some of our youth product and also been a bit unlucky. We continue to bring in experimental foreigners over our own youth.

    We could have the following

    David Marshall

    Darnell Fisher

    John Kennedy

    Stephen McManus

    Charlie Mulgrew

    Aiden McGeady

    James Forrest

    Darren McGregor

    Liam Henderson

    Tony Watt

    Dylan McGeoch

There are notable areas that require attention in that team down the centre of the pitch but it is still a team with some expensive talent. Arguably that team would give the current 11 a run for their money.
