Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. JIMMCI,

I have thought Kris Commons’ time was up since our manager arrived. I think that is what lay behind his inexcusable outburst. Totally unprofessional, even if he has been cheered on by the support for it. A fine servant but, as you say, no individual is greater than the club.

Can anyone imagine him doing that in Mr Stein’s day (and plenty of the players then must have felt like it, judging by some of their comments )?

Don’t think Davie Hay coming back would help matters. WGS would be my choice, if any is necessary, but he was ousted by fan power

Thank you for the Da posts,

my mam now sits in my Das chair, nearly 15 yr now but she says it still helps her feel close to him,

Great post, mate. Good to have you back.

Smashing wee chat on Wednesday and my grateful thanks. We’ll defo meet up in March!

My impulsive answer would be yes. However, that solves nothing. KC is nearing the end of his career so it’s as if you can plan to build a team around him for years to come.

I just don’t think Ronny is good enough. If anything I think we’ve gone backwards in Europe. He must learn to adapt and he’s not shown any willingness to do that.

Jinky flung his jersey at Jock Stein in protest at having being subbed.

We don’t know what verbals went on back then. We didn’t have blanket TV coverage of every incident.

Would you keep either of them over PL?

There’s your problem, mate. The root of the problem, the nub.

    PL.

Get rid, employ a football man as DOF and a CEO who has the club/business first and foremost in his thoughts.

PL clearly learned a lot when Bobo faced him down with the comment-You are CEO of Celtic Plc. I am CEO of Bobo Balde Plc.

Get self-interested people out of the club,we might get somewhere.

Aye two different issues of course but we would be setting a dangerous precedent by letting player power go as far as to publicly attack the managers and staff in the dugout..

I think the players are getting off very lightly after Thursday, not one player got a pass mark in my opinion as for Kris he’d be cleaning the boots in my dressing room for two months:))

Great tale of yer Da’ last night glad I got to read it!

Of course, only two people ever knew the truth of that…

  9. I’m delighted to see so many posts on CQN on the back of this painful defeat

Passionate Celtic fans, venting their frustration at what we are witnessing with Our Football Club

If it’s OK for Kris Commons, what’s the problem with fans doing so ?

Note, I have missed the word team

I believe the biggest problem is our players are not playing as a team ?

I have no idea if disharmony in the squad, other than rumours I read on here or talk to fellow fans about, but something definately ain’t right

Our Manager has had 16months to fix this, since the bebacle in trying to qualify for champions league 2014 season, there has been absolutely No progress

How much longer can you give him ?

And as a fan who does attend games, 90% of his time we have been poor to watch, in my opinion

Oh Gooood Morning Celtic Fans :-)

  10. Having re-watched the game, I’m more baffled than ever at Commons’ substitution. It wasn’t that he was better than the rest – he was streets ahead. Nearly every meaningful chance created came through him, he was the only player to show a bit of guile, and even at a psychological level, he was urging on his deflated teammates at 1-3.

Ah, I’ve got it – conformity. He was taken off because he was making the rest of the team look bad. Right?

(btw, I still think he’s our best attacking midfielder since Jinky, Hamilton Tim)

  11. You know I think Ronnie has ‘adapted’ the approach which may be part of the problem. We are not pressing high up the park or forward passing like we did when he arrived. We are closer to the old possession and cross park passing on Neil and Gordon than Ronnie’s preferred style..

    But, that comprise isn’t working.

  12. CULTSBHOY LIKES LIVING WAGE HATES HEATED DRIVEWAYS on 24TH OCTOBER 2015 10:00 AM

    Nat know

I wouldn’t bracket JC with the names you mention… They are all proven successes as managers?

    ———————————————————–

I know. That’s my point. Having those characteristics isn’t a good argument for sacking someone. It’s results that should be looked at rather than whether someone is self assured or arrogant or whatever.

  13. Bottom line is that Commons was disrespectful.

However as so often said, respect has to be earned.

The wider picture suggests that there are more individuals than just Commons, who currently don’t fully respect Ronny’s methods, Ronny’s decisions, Ronny’s tactics.

It is obvious watching them that they aren’t 100% fully behind the managers ways.

The stand is set, the noose is around the neck…. Ronny’s stool is in the process of being kicked from under his feet.

    Only a matter of time.

  14. Starry

Cheers mate, I hope you’re all well.

Yep, KC by his actions on Thursday night may have created a situation where it’s almost impossible for Ronny to be sacked.

  15. The whole team was poor the other night but watching the game again I concentrated on the ‘defence’ and midfield. The positioning of our defenders was exceptionally poor. Central defenders dragged into the midfield, full backs leaving huge spaces behind them. There has been no improvement here since Legia, not even a sign of improvement. Our two central midfielders did very little defending either, and gave the ball away in dangerous areas.

Then there is the lottery of corner kicks, poor finishing by Molde kept the score down here because players still aren’t taking responsibility in the box.

It’s very frustrating watching the repetition of mistakes.

    afteryouclaudeCSC

  16. Why was RD not allowed to bring in one of his own backroom choices when he arrived?

Would it have made a difference?

i honestly dont think Collins is the man to be there.

It’s hard supporting our team just now, i dread to think how hard it is for the guys who never miss a game (HT)

We need to hammer Molde at home for RD to stay in the job after crimbo imho.

  17. Hamiltontim

I’m not sure I follow that logic.

For me, K.Commons actions signal the beginning of the end for Ronny.

The show of frustration directed at the management team, has gained support from I would guess is at least 70% of our fan base.

It is now a irreversible force….. With only one outcome. Ronny is on borrowed time. The knives are out. The Molde game at home could be his Tony Mowbray, St Mirren moment. Trust me

  18. BURGAS HOOPS on 24TH OCTOBER 2015 11:09

Honestly I never find it hard going to watch Celtic. Some of the best memories I have are from defeats or times when the team are doing poorly.

  19. I won’t be drawn anymore on this, but the fact is that even individual Lions have had reservations about the appointment of Ronny Deila since the start of his tenure,he even agreed with a previous assertion of mine that Lennoxtown is now no more than a facility that is producing more players for other Scottish clubs than it is producing for Celtic

I’ve realised best way to read can is wait until you are about 8 pages behind because you only get Turkish airways when you reload to get to next page

  21. Btw Kris Commons actions add some credence to the rumour from some weeks ago that a group of players approached Peter Lawell to express their displeasure about the coaching methods and the suitably of the coaching staff

  22. Ruggyman

Maybe the board are thinking that Ronny’s time is up. Now if they do they’re now in a position that if they sack him then it will be seen to have come about because of player unrest.

There’s no way they could or should allow that to happen. Not unless it had happened behind closed doors.

  23. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

I don’t agree that everything can be laid at the door of PL, that doesn’t ring true for me, every disaster every hard time in life is more often than not a combination of events or happenings.

Believing that replacing PL would somehow rocket Celtic back to Euro greatness is as feasible to me as Santa.

Apologies to all the people who think that by personify the blame into one person is the answer it’s not in my opinion. Our vision has been unclear even the appointment of Ronny was a bit of a wishy washy PR job, the fans deserve to know what we are trying to achieve!!

Ronny Deila is yer answer, him and his new way of coaching at Celtic is the answer that the board have chosen to navigate these hard times and in a way I think they’ve chosen it knowing that it will take time to change the football culture at Celtic and have been willing perhaps to sacrifice short terms for a foundation for the future. For the board to sack Ronny now would humiliate them and their plan for a new Celtic future I can’t see that decision being made.

Whether Ronny can deliver that remains to be seen but to replace him now would say to me that the only alternative for Celtic is to chuck money at the problem and I don’t see that many clubs where that has worked.

Celtics youth programme has to deliver more and we need to grow our own stars supplemented by wise buys(I know I Know) Lennoxtown has to start producing or it’s an white elephant producing pros for the SPL at our cost:))

I am absolutely at a loss to have watched a whole Celtic team unable to muster a decent chance over 90 or minutes against a team of limited ability like Molde so the boards plan of a new direction is hanging by a thread:((

Alternatively we could just get Henrik and some combination of MON’s team as our comfort blanket and woe betide the board should that fail…

I’m rambling now mate too many Italian wake ups!

    Thanks for that S.

I used a laptop for the first time since the CQN overhaul, by golly it was hard work.

  27. BMCUW, I think Jinky told that story himself.

I think the main issue with Ronny is that he appears slow to acknowledge glaring deficiencies in the team set up. In the beginning he kept playing a 2 man midfield and playing left footed and rightfooted wingers on the wrong side.

After a few European thrashings he eventually relented but now he is back with a gung ho attacking attitude in Europe. We can do that in the SPFL but cuter Managers with better players can just set up their team to sit back invite us on and hit us on the break.

Everyone and their Mother knew that Molde were going to do just that, it was time to be cautious & bide our time and to keep it tight at the back but instead we played right into their hands.

The pitch and the weather played a big part, individual players had stinkers but the basic plan and set up was also wrong and no change at all was made until the game and our chances were dead.

We were done 3-1 but it could have been 5 or 6 and the goal we got was gifted to us albeit Kris did extremely well in converting it.

Ronny seems a nice guy but it seems he is just learning his trade with us, that is simply not good enough. His back up team have to be held equally culpable, and the fan’s patience is wearing thin.

The task is now clear, win the next 4 games & gain redemption or else move on.

  28. The ‘twin-headed’ Ronny/Johnny boil MUST be lanced now – if not we will fail more regularly and fall further.

We need a manager, NOT a ‘project’ coach.

We have stemmed, with Carlton Cole, the stream of ‘project’ players – we MUST now do the same with the management.

Our player wages budget should be buying us so much more than we are getting.
