Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. the glorious balance sheet on

There isn’t a single Celtic player who excites the crowd or scares or commits the opposition when he is on the ball.

The closest thing we have to such a player is James Forrest who struggles with injuries and to find consistent form.

We have become a haven for spineless crapbags specialising in square passes and turgid pedestrian football.

Take the emotion out of it for a second. Do you enjoy watching the style of football that we typically play nowadays?

Putting results aside, is this the best standard of football we can realistically expect to get with our financial resources and coaching infrastructure?

  2. the glorious balance sheet on 24th October 2015 2:18 am –

the team members are just about average enough to beat every team in scotland,

they are piss poor below average, set up in any european game, and will allways, allways get beat away from home.

As soon as it went 2-0 on Thursday up they popped.

Those same people would not have came on if the scoreline was reversed.

There has been a lot of talking points though because of the manner of the defeat and since the game a lot of posters have felt the need to express their views on whether we keep going with Ronny or not which is understandable.

Its the way these posters pop up when things are going bad during the game that get me.

Obviously some are huns on for a wind up but some are Tims…..well…..supposedly and its as if they were hoping a 2nd goal would go in so they could stick their knives in.

  15. As has been well documented I have warned that Lawwells strategy would see the continuous decline of Celtic. His puppet , the Norwegian Mowbray needs to be sacked.

The decline under Lawwell will continue , the beancounter only does downsizing whilst securing his Bonus. He controls the whole operation at Celtic from top to bottom. He even has journalistic control over this site as Paul67 must be the only Celtic fan in the world yet to question Lawwell.

We have been without the Ibrox Club for a number of years and in a position of strength and guaranteed CL qualifiers for last 2 seasons have blown £50M. Delia will fail again if still in situ in the summer as the Team will be weaker and tactically Celtic are very easy to play against as Delia has no plan B.

We can easily blame Dermot but the decisions are our CEOs and Director of Football Lawwells.

We knew before the CL qualifiers we needed a striker and left back and that we would sell Virgil anyway. How crazy was that not to invest up front. Then running around 3 months into the season to buy a striker who has not played for 5 months. These are the actions of a CEO making it up as he goes along. The only forward planning Lawwell does is the financial forecast in order to secure his Bonus. The Celtic Budget includes in the expense summary line 18 has a provision for Lawwells bonus allegedly.

Paul67 can you at least look at Lawwells damage to Celtic once—- even if it means dropping an article about cheating refs, Sevco cash crisis or the latest shenanigans at FIFA. Imagine we had CEO who was able to provide the value add required to take our club to the next level instead of running it into the ground.

  16. Thunder Road,

You’re right. When there’s so to feel worried/angry/hurt about, fans need to be able to express all that and that’s where this blog is invaluable. When things are going well, it doesn’t mean we love Celtic any less when people don’t post as often.

    These are hard times.

  17. Thunder Road

    I agree with you completely!

We were poor from top to bottom on Thursday and lessons need to be learned and quickly.

As far as I could see this morning, we are not out of Europe yet and still on for the domestic treble.

Great to meet you at the Hoot and hope you are well.

    OnlyHereFurraJeer.

  19. Philboy,

Nope he is not fit. A normal club would have got him in the summer and signed him in time for Europe. Or maybe he has been signed well in advance of 2016 qualifiers and we have taken forward planning to a new level. Or maybe not.

  20. Celtic are rank…..

Celtic are that bad that they make KC look guid.

Celtic on the pitch dont have one player who would make you say -“….that’s a Celtic player!”

Celtic on the pitch are, in the main….a collection of jouney men.

Celtic have some players who, if moulded together by a savvy heid….could provide a starting block.

Celtic need a manager that the players fear….as that’s not the case….freefall will be the destination of the dressing room.

Celtic will not be cured till….the illness at the top of the club is remedied.

Celtic’s custodians are driven by the allure of the cash register kerchinging.

Celtic’s custodians would head for the hills if, the fans put a halt to the kerchinging.

Celtic’s current predicament can only be solved by the fans growing cojones and sacking the board.

Ronny is a plastic-puppet-manager with a plastic-roar-when-he’s-winning…..but, Ronny is only a symptom of the illness that needs remedied by the fans with cojones.

Celtic will never be, Celtic when there is a policy in place were….any new manager has to get the ‘snip’ on signing on the dotted line.

Celtic’s confidentiallity-clause-culture…is along the same lines as the Kelly’s & White’s pact from the early 90’s.

Celtic’s custodians seem to, fail to realise that one of the un-written area’s of criteria to be a successful football club in Scotland is that, key-posts through out the structures of the club have to be filled by uppitty-Tims.

    Celtic directors.

    Celtic P.R. dept.

    Celtic management.

    Celtic players.

    Celtic supporters.

Apathy has engulfed Celtic FC and it’s supporters since the end of, Neil Lennons second season of manager onwards.

When Neil was fighting the battle on all fronts.

    In the dug out

On the pitch to face the mibs

Threatening to take the title from Walter

Making the mibs go on strike

Even having to give the clubs reaction to the LNS verdict

Sadly, when Neil was reigned-in by the custodians….we went straight to the back of the bus.

It’s almost as though the board are scared to put a team on the pitch that will have the orcs-civil-unrest-p#sh…kicking off so, they’ll put a depreciated in quality product onto the pitch and, into the dugout coz….they’ll get away with it!

    …..laters…..

  21. CultsBhoy likes living wage hates heated driveways on

2 days later and more sober reflections will be made.

No doubt the Celtic management and board will still be furious with Commons but they must also recognise his outburst has the support of many of the fans. I don’t know if Kris is a talisman for the general discontent but firing him or even admonishing him too severely would have a very bad impact on attendances.

The AGM will be interesting and also how Lawwell gauges the likely impact of retaining Ronnie on season ticket sales next season.

My guess is we will see Ronnie fail miserably in the remaining 3 European games and that he will be replaced .

Unless he is replaced with someone who can challenge Lawwell we would be as well retaining him.

If this weekend proves to be Lenny’s final game at Bolton – we may see movement sooner rather than later.

Whatever happens – it will be good to to see the back of Collins who would be retained by no manager other than his pal Billy Stark…

I had a wee swatch back at yesterday’s blog, nearly passed out, the part where you said you don’t like to see Celtic lose or something like that, your posts read differently, sometimes I think you wallow in any defeat, sometimes after a good win you grudgingly give praise, but the best part of some of yesterday’s posts were the cliquey “well said” “couldn’t have put it better myself” and so on…..maybe you do have some common ground with some but a wee tad hypocritical, but each to their own after all that’s what makes the world go round

Hope you are well and by the way this happy clapper hasn’t been too happy since Thursday even I could hardly take a positive from that, although hopefully the players get a chance to get back on the ball the morra
