Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

The honest answer is none of us know what Collins does. What we do know is this:

Whatever it is – it isn’t working

He is a PR hand grenade

He is a very conceited guy

He has a history of upsetting dressing rooms

He appeared to be the target of Commons outburst

When he was appointed there was a distinctly muted welcome – I personally felt extremely underwhelmed.

I met he and Billy Stark one night at the Beardmore Hotel in Clydebank when I was staying there on business – they were there as part of a Scotland U21 session.

Stark was a very warm and humble guy. Collins was cold and totally lacking in humility. I would describe him as a ‘God of his own idolatry’

    He’s not Celtic material.

Therefore I would be delighted at news of his departure.

Is part of the problem that RD is ‘The Peter Principle’ personified?

I dunno. But in amongst all those Ps I believe you will find the real root cause of our decline.

Once again you display your lack of knowledge, whether it be football, politics,no subject is immune from your ability to spout utter pash.

Davie Hay may be getting on-he’s reached the magic number of 67-but he was responsible for some great scouting till Jock Brown screwed him. He was hard as nails,a great player, and an excellent-if not legendary-manager. He has forgotten in the last five minutes more than you know.

I get that you don’t like John Collins mate – that’s fair enough. However, in your spiel above you could substitute his name with any of the following :

    Alex Ferguson

    Jose Morinho

    Brian Clough

    Gordon Strachan

    You get the picture….

This kind of undermines your argument. Also you state that you don’t know what John Collins’ role is and then go on to say how he’s the main problem and needs to be sacked. That’s like saying “I’ve no idea what the problem is but I’m about to tell you how to solve it…..”.

Anyway, to answer the original question, John Collins is the Assistant Manager at Celtic FC.

  19. “And they gave us stories that soared away

  20. Didn’t see the game on Thursday as I was at an event and then travelling n a train with dodgy wifi. But it is frustrating that we don’t seem to be learning lessons. Every manager makes mistakes – but like in all walks of life making the same mistake over and over is concerning,

We’ve got two home games now that are mist win. Even then it may not be enough to qualify. But we have some big domestic games first, stating tomorrow.

You have strong case for Billy McNeil- arguably he will never be surpassed- I can’t foresee in the next 100 years any Celtic Captain lifting ‘the’ European Cup…. Maybe not the greatest Celtic Player but very likely the greatest Celtic mhan.

My parents were seated beside him many years ago at a wedding in Stonehaven. I went to collect them and my dad introduced me to Billy. I was a wee bit star struck and was keen not to impose and let him get on with his night but he was an absolute gent and took a fair bit of time to chat away- more interested in me than blowing his trumpet. I’d have rather talked about him and Celtic.

He personified everything good about Celtic.

  23. Appointing Davie Hay as assistant manager or technical advisor is a great shout. Also appointing John Kennedy to the coaching staff in place of Danny McGrain has proved to be a mistake. No disrespect to John intended.

  24. On the subject of players not turning up, when they admit this should they donate their wages to the foundation in recognition of being absent from work?

2 days later and still pd off. Much has been made of the full backs being pushed on, but it looks like that’s what they’ve been told to do rather than a player decision on the park.

Really lacking consistency. Danger is that affects player confidence and belief which is a downward spiral.

We have family in Stonehaven and are up there often for weekends and the New Year.

I once met Billy in the “Hook n Eye” in Stonehaven where we watched a game against Hearts at Tynecastle. It was a New Year game. We were down 2-0 after about 10 minutes but won 3-2 thanks to Mick MicManus scoring twice towards the end of the game.

He was great company and very friendly towards everyone in the pub. We shook hands as he was leaving after the game.

A lovely moment in my Celtic life.

  26. No idea who Ronny will select tomorrow but after KC’s appalling tantrum and half hearted, PR-man written “apology” if Commons plays or is even on the bench there is no hope for Ronny. He’s already in very thin ice but needs to show decisive leadership.

Commons actions on Thursday shamed our great club. Apart from his goal Kris did next to nothing and like virtually everyone in the team he could have been to subbed.

I like KC a lot. He’s been a fantastic value for money signing for us but I’m afraid his time at CP is now up. No individual greater than the club.

  27. What was Kris pointing at on Thursday? Looked like 1 of 3 possibilities.

    1. The fans. Hmmmm. Players not renowned for over concern so I’m discounting that one.

    2. The goal. Possible on the lines of – Was that no good enough for you John? I’m the only one scoring.

    3. Johansson. Possible. You take me of and leave that useless whippet on, are you daft?

    So, goal or whippet?

    H H

  28. Personally I like players being angry when subbed. It shows passion and a desire to be on. I would like all our players to be angry when subbed. Personal abuse was the bit going too far, but that may be a sign of disharmony more broadly in the dressing room.

  31. Dumbhoy, def, 2&3 One of my favourite players in the 2nd half of last season was SJ, but he hasn’t turned up this season. He should have been subbed. If I was KC I would have spit the dummy out. But not there. I would have waited to get into the changing room and then screamed at JC ” see you!! I really don’t like you!!” That’s how real men settle things.
