Dougie Dougie and SFA cover-up

897

As a consequence of items relating to lies told by former referee Dougie McDonald’s no longer being found by searches through Google’s UK portal, while reaming available on the US portal, a suspicion arose that McDonald has used recent EU ruling to have these items expunged from the search engine.

During a Dundee United-Celtic game in 2010 McDonald awarded Celtic a penalty, then quickly changed his mind.  He lied to Neil Lennon after the game, and to the SFA supervisor about the circumstances which caused him to change his mind.  Celtic Quick News published an excerpt from the supervisor’s report, which was based on information McDonald subsequently admitted was false.

Having admitted to a lie, and under pressure from Celtic, McDonald resigned later in the year, but the greater stench was that of cover-up.  Having set the chain of events in motion, McDonald realised his error and admitted what he did to the SFA on the day of the game.

Having lied, he quickly came clean, but the actions of the SFA were far more serious.  With knowledge of the lie, the SFA were now in ownership of it.  They should have told McDonald to apologise to Neil Lennon and the referee supervisor.  Instead, they publicly reaffirmed the lie.

Even after the cover-up came to light, the SFA continued to close ranks on Celtic, faces were set to stone.  If Celtic didn’t know their place when it came to the dark arts of the SFA, they became acutely aware of it then.  Nothing could ever be the same again.

I have sympathy for McDonald.  He made a mistake but quickly did the right thing.  His name is tarnished largely as a consequence of the actions of his superiors.  If he called Neil Lennon the next day to extend the apology he gave to the SFA, the matter may have ended there and then.  He was not an innocent victim of an SFA cover-up, but he was a kind of victim.

The fight to change the SFA goes on.  Peter Lawwell is now on the board and some of the faces have moved on, but it is not a healthy body.  The vast majority of the 93 member clubs are not conspiratorial in nature and have no ill towards Celtic or any other club, but overhauling the labyrinth of committees, with vested interests which have been decades in the making, will look like pushing water uphill to anyone committed to reform.

Our interests are best served leaving the SFA behind, and we’re not alone in that.

Excitement builds as the 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place tomorrow in Aberdour, with Frank McGarvey and Len Murray!

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation. We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle. Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle. The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want. Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

  1. Have always found golf a great barometer of a playing partner’s character.

3 to 4 hours in the company of mates most of the time, but complete strangers sometimes.

It is the last bastion of 21st century sport where cheating is not tolerated.

Less dynamic than some sports like football for example, so any cheating in golf is far more premeditated than instinctive.

    It is NEVER tolerated.

Golf is a marvellous sport really.

  7. Brilliant gesture from the Algerian players, I believe it’s to be built in Palestine.

Sharp contrast to the Ghana player who I saw on Twitter kissing the envelope which contained his alleged £300k bonus.

Unless of course the envelope goes straight to his missus…..so maybe he was just kissing it goodbye!

IGC, in the early eighties Andy McLuskey was interviewed by Ann Nightingale on Radio 1. Liverpool were doing well and she said you must be happy being a Liverpool fan. He said no as he is a Celtic fan despite being brought up in Liverpool. He said his dad played for Celtic at one point.

Delaney’s, hopefully yer mammy’s improving health continues.

Winning Captains, my Seville story started off great as the trip was a suprise birthday present from my pals. It went downhill from there, I was dipped,350 euros, in the Madrid subway on my birthday. One of my pals had his wallet, containing his match ticket, was dipped also.

I spent the night of my birthday in the Seville polis station making a statement via a phone to an English speaking cop, and on the day of the game, one beer only. Getting beat just added to my misery. However, the misfortune that befell us was tempered by the pride in our team & great fans on that never to be forgotten adventure.

McDonald belongs in the list of ‘unbiased’ refs we have had to endure . Ian Foote, RFC Gordon, Boabby Davidson, Waddell and that lying, malicious bawheid fae Bonkle, from my time of going to games..

If any history student wants to see the footballing establishment at its worst, 2008 onwards displays where their priorities lay. For example, Peat & Duffield trying to get that year’s Scottish Cup final moved without even consulting Queen of the South, showed the contempt the guardians of our game had for other teams.

If Duffield comes on the telly or radio, I go out the room. A total bumhole who played his part in deflecting away from the real issues to the detriment of Scottish football.

SOAL, fantastic gesture by the Algerian players. No doubt the Daily Mail or Express will say something negative about it.

Nice start to season for us tonight. I’m in the not too bothered about pre-season results camp. Ever since we lost 5 1 pre centenary season, and look how that turned out, I would rather a poor, results wise, pre season and a very good season to follow.

Livibhoy, I posted last night about Celtic Collectibles wanting to contact Pat Stanton.

Thank you for posting earlier with e contact details for them to get in touch with him. He was captain of the second best football team (not club) I have seen in Scottish football. If our standards weren’t so high 1970 – 74, Hibs should have won the league at least once with the team they had. Its pleasing he completed his Scottish medal collection with us.

  16. Don’t know if any of you have ever watched the footage of the Hampden Riot after George McCluskey’s screamer in 1980.

Well there’s an almost iconic image of a red haired Celtic supporter fighting with the Huns in the middle of the park and getting to his feet.

The Bhoy’s name is Michael Moody and tomorrow he’ll be buried out of Sacred Heart Church in Cumbernauld.

Spare a prayer or a thought. RIP Michael.

  17. Oh and if there’s anyone needing a lift through to Aberdour tomorrow I could squeeze 2 little ones in my wee-ish car. I’m heading through early though in an effort to try to fit in a quick coffee at our very own Taggsybhoy’s deli. So planning to leave EK around 8.00 and happy to pick up if en route…

I’m staying over though so no guarantees about a return journey! ;-)

  18. Today’s blog by Paul highlights the cheating we have had to endure in recent times.

We are also set to play Rapid Vienna in a pre-season “friendly” and this has prompted me to post a little teaser on what is to come from CQN later this year.

We are working on our next book which will be by Billy McNeill and Davie Hay with Alex Gordon and will cover the period from 1978 when Billy became Celtic manager, being replaced by Davie Hay and then coming back in time for the centenary season, one more bit of glory courtesy of wee Joe Miller then we leave the story as we head into the horrible period at the beginning of the nineties.

I mentioned last week that we will be revealing more about HIM signing for THEM and how it REALLY happened. It is shocking! Worse than you know. Dirty wee bassa so he is.

And another revelation in this book will be what really happened inside the club when some numpty throw a bottle onto the pitch and a defeated Rapid Vienna started the cheating. Why did Celtic allow them to get a replay in Manchester and who is to blame at the club for effectively rolling over. Explosive stuff on both these stories and both with genuine, never published before insights.

Re the CQN Edinburgh Lodge event – the ONLY people who have confirmed so far are Lisbon Lions! If you would like to come along please email david@CQNMagazine.com
