Dundee United 0-4 Celtic

769

Tannadice was so packed out this afternoon it looked like a Rangers creditors’ meeting and the Scottish Cup tie on show didn’t disappoint.  Dundee United had the better of the opening period but four second half goals from an irresistible Celtic decided outcome.

Jon Daly headed wide early on after a Willo Flood cross early on but the first great chance of the game fell to Johnny Russell on 25 minutes.  Gary Mackay-Steven got free on the left and crossed for Russell who mishit his shot, allowing Fraser Forster to make an incredible save and claw the ball away.

With Dundee United clearly on top defender Robbie Neilson received a straight red card for a forearm smash into the face of Georgios Samaras.

It took Celtic 36 minutes to make an attempt on goal.  Joe Ledley’s shot from a corner was blocked and James Forrest shot over from a corner seconds later.

Celtic stepped up the pace after halftime.  Charlie Mulgrew jinked to create space on the left side of the United box but Ledley couldn’t reach his cross.  8 minutes after halftime the visitors were ahead after the best move of the game.

Adam Matthews passed back to Fraser Forster who played the ball out to Joe Ledley.  Ledley moved forward after playing the ball onto Samaras, who passed to Mulgrew before the ball moved onto Stokes.  Anthony Stokes fired a low cross into the box which Gary Hooper dummied for Ledley, who never stopped running.  The midfielder won the ball by nipping in front of his marker and shot home from 7 yards.

Samaras shot over before a Stokes shot after 64 minutes from 25 yards was saved by Pernis, the first save the keeper made in the game.

United had a great chance to draw level when substitute Milos Lacny latched onto a long through ball but his shot from 16 yards was weak and off target.

Georgios Samaras made it 0-2 when he got on the end of a Mulgew free kick to bullet a header into the top right corner of the net.
Two minutes later Johnny Russell had a great chance to pull a goal back but his shot from 15 yards flew narrowly over.

Stokes should have tied the game up 11 minutes from time when James Forrest combined with Hooper before Forrest cut the ball back to Stokes, who contrived to hit the crossbar with his shot with an empty net waiting.

Samaras and Forrest both had chances to add to the scoring before Ledley threaded a pass through the middle of the United defence for Stokes to clip past Pernis into the net.

With a minute of the game remaining Samaras beat Dillon, who pulled the Greek international down inside the box.  Scott Brown rolled the resultant penalty into the net to make if 0-4.

SPL 10 not pursuing shared gate money

    By Jim Spence

    BBC Scotland

An upcoming meeting of the 10 non-Old Firm Scottish Premier League clubs will not discuss a return to the sharing of gate money.

While a more even distribution of income is on the agenda, the sharing of gate receipts has never been discussed, according to one chairman.

“That is not what we want,” he told BBC Scotland.

“We want money to be distributed better and money going into the division below for the benefit of all.”

Around £1m is the figure the clubs have in mind to pay to the 10 clubs in an SPL2, should such a second tier be established.

Asked why Celtic and Rangers had not been invited to the meeting, the chairman said: “It’s not all about Celtic and it’s not all about Rangers.

“They have wanted out of the league for the last five years.

“Its not all about them. We need to look after all of us. I want change for the rest of Scottish football to benefit.”

The same source also admitted that he thought that the top league could survive without Rangers, who are currently in administration.

Referring to the SPL’s current television deal and the possibility of only one half of the Old Firm on offer, he said: “I think everyone knows that they [Rangers] will exist.”

But he added: “All deals are negotiable. I think we can survive with one of them on a lesser TV deal.”

Another SPL source pondered the likelihood of a top flight without Rangers next season.

“It’s difficult to imagine it,” he replied. “But if they were applying as a ‘newco’ we would need to see a very robust business plan for the future and we would need certain assurances.

“There would also probably have to be penalties for a few seasons.”

  4. Margaret McGill on

So whats Celtic’s business plan these days embdy know?

I am sure its based on the various Newco outcomes.

However, it looks like the SPL 10 are hatching there business plans right now with Celtic excluded.

    So

a)newco in SPL ..whats the plan?

    b)newco in 3rd division …whats the plan?

    c) No newco ..whats the plan?

or are they just going to wait and be out maneuvered by the usual bigoted Jabba the jobs of Scotland?

    Obviously I won’t be buying any of them,but I can’t wait to see how the rags,particularly the Daily Ranger-report Neil’s after-match comments.

My bet is that they state that Celtic aren’t talking to them,so they are unable to report anything!

    Good on ye,Neil.

  7. On FF they have posted the minutes of their “Rangers Fighting Fund” meeting at Ibrox.

Some great suggestions from those crazy bears, including this…

“The possibility of showing away games on beam-back at Ibrox was suggested, with a flute band on at half time.”

Apparently Donald Findlay is back on the scene too, offering free legal advice…

Still basking in the glow of a great second half performance by the team (the away support managed an exemplary effort for the full 90 minutes).

Off topic, I’ve just ordered my new phone. After much umming and arring I’ve reluctantly moved away from Apple and plumped for the monster Galaxy Note. I’m feeling dirty but it just does so much. Any fellow CQNers who have done similar able to offer reassurance?

    Thanks for posting that.

Really struggled with the feed I had during the game and missed a lot of the game. I also had the soundtrack for a cartoon version of Godzilla playing simultaneously that I just couldn’t silence. It made for a few moments of confusion until I realized that it wasn’t Neil screaming at his players!!

I reverted to no sound and multi buffering visual coverage.

I can’t recommend this as a satisfactory way to watch Celtic, although I now have a fondness for Japanese ‘B’ movies.

Many many thanks for the bbc highlights, which we can’t get ouside of UK.

    Much appreciated.

Couple of thoughts about the match:

    – We were struggling a bit (probably untill the red card incident) in much the same way as we did against Aberdeen. Could be “treble” pressure? But we have now taken giant setps toward reaching that goal, so hopefully the players will calm down and get back to dominating their opponents.

    – Sammy is unplayable at the moment: how good is it to see a Celtic number 9 get his napper on great cross and bullet it into the back of the net

    – United are a more than decent team, and they were let down by Neilson who was obviously told by Houston to “look after” Sammy.

On this form United will cause the Hun much embarrassment (on the park, for a wee change) next Saturday. That should get us into a great party mood for the CF on Sunday.

    Great week ahead, enjoy!!!

Toatlly agree with your “media” comment. In fact I possted similar thoughts yesterday:

I think a lot of the stuff we are seeing and hearing at the moment is geared to keep the Hun pacified.

There is a huge risk to civil disorder and domestic abuse increase if RFCIA go bust.

Neither the Big Tax Bill or Liquidation will happen until after the Ipox game.

The government know this, HMRC know this, the police know this, everyman and their dug knows this.

There will inevitably be a bit of trouble at the game: the media will make sure we are tarred with the same brush as per usual.

After that, it’s Manchester to the power ten.

  23. Morning,

  26. Great 2nd half performance yesterday against a well organised Utd, Neilsen must hang his head in shame as any chance Utd had evapourated with his red mist.

Another important save from FF- great to hear the fans sing his name- big performances from Victor, Joe and my MoM the non stop irrepressable Georgios Samaras, what a player he is.

Watched a re-run last night- Tanner should be ashamed of himself with his “Celtic got lucky” line- no wonder Neil was raging!

Celtic fans yesterday- absolutely brilliant. Utd fans also got well behind their team, hope they do so again next week.

Also, the unbelievable defence of nice guy Lasley by Sky and BBC- only his 3rd red card this season.

A dirtier wee player you will not find anywhere, and a player who is basically finished at the top level.
