Dundee United 0-4 Celtic

769

Tannadice was so packed out this afternoon it looked like a Rangers creditors’ meeting and the Scottish Cup tie on show didn’t disappoint.  Dundee United had the better of the opening period but four second half goals from an irresistible Celtic decided outcome.

Jon Daly headed wide early on after a Willo Flood cross early on but the first great chance of the game fell to Johnny Russell on 25 minutes.  Gary Mackay-Steven got free on the left and crossed for Russell who mishit his shot, allowing Fraser Forster to make an incredible save and claw the ball away.

With Dundee United clearly on top defender Robbie Neilson received a straight red card for a forearm smash into the face of Georgios Samaras.

It took Celtic 36 minutes to make an attempt on goal.  Joe Ledley’s shot from a corner was blocked and James Forrest shot over from a corner seconds later.

Celtic stepped up the pace after halftime.  Charlie Mulgrew jinked to create space on the left side of the United box but Ledley couldn’t reach his cross.  8 minutes after halftime the visitors were ahead after the best move of the game.

Adam Matthews passed back to Fraser Forster who played the ball out to Joe Ledley.  Ledley moved forward after playing the ball onto Samaras, who passed to Mulgrew before the ball moved onto Stokes.  Anthony Stokes fired a low cross into the box which Gary Hooper dummied for Ledley, who never stopped running.  The midfielder won the ball by nipping in front of his marker and shot home from 7 yards.

Samaras shot over before a Stokes shot after 64 minutes from 25 yards was saved by Pernis, the first save the keeper made in the game.

United had a great chance to draw level when substitute Milos Lacny latched onto a long through ball but his shot from 16 yards was weak and off target.

Georgios Samaras made it 0-2 when he got on the end of a Mulgew free kick to bullet a header into the top right corner of the net.
Two minutes later Johnny Russell had a great chance to pull a goal back but his shot from 15 yards flew narrowly over.

Stokes should have tied the game up 11 minutes from time when James Forrest combined with Hooper before Forrest cut the ball back to Stokes, who contrived to hit the crossbar with his shot with an empty net waiting.

Samaras and Forrest both had chances to add to the scoring before Ledley threaded a pass through the middle of the United defence for Stokes to clip past Pernis into the net.

With a minute of the game remaining Samaras beat Dillon, who pulled the Greek international down inside the box.  Scott Brown rolled the resultant penalty into the net to make if 0-4.

    Good Morning,

Many will recall the teale of George Bernard Shaw asking a woman to sleep with him:

” Madam, will you sleep with me for a Million pounds?”

” Why, Mr Shaw,My Goodness, I would certainly think about it!”

” Well would you sleep with me for £1?”

” Certainly not! What kind of a woman do you think I am?”

” Madam, we have already established what kind of woman you are, now we are haggling about the price!”.

The story is also attributed to Winston Churchill, although the initial price changes to £5Million instead of £1Million.

It is a story that comes to mind when considering the meeting of the 10 SPL clubs that is due to take place this week. The purpose of the meeting is unclear, but there is a heavy feeling in the air that the whole purpose of the meeting is to set a price. That may be a price that is acceptable to allow a Rangers Phoenix Club automatic re-entry to the SPL upon any application being made by any party who controls any such phoenix club following the Liquidation of the current company that controls things down Ibrox way.

Equally, the ten may be setting an alternative price, the payment of which may be acceptable in return for ensuring the application of proper sporting integrity, and so ensuring any new Phoenix Club will strat life in the normal position of any newcomer starting a job with no experience and no history in the workplace. At the bottom of the ladder. So it is with all trainees, apprentices, and start up companies– you don’t become market leaders, foremen or chief executives overnight. You work your way up.

The exclusion of Celtic Football Club from these talks gives the impression- either by default or design- that in the event of a price being payable to prevent a new Company gaining automatic entry to the SPL, then the majority of that price will be paid by Celtic in some way. Of course that may not be the case but the matter is so unclear that any which way you look at it the meeting must already be viewed as a bit of a PR disaster as it has all the hallmarks of trying to create some kind of fix in a smokey back room, or the auctioning of a soul rather than the price of knicker elastic! It lacks all the so called “transparency” that we have heard so much about in the last two years or so.

The late Ernie Walker always warned about the disaster that would follow if Scottish Football took the television pound. If I have heard Chic Young tell that story once then I have jeard it at least a dozen times. This morning, the other SPL clubs should be very VERY wary of what they cannot see and what they cannot control.

Messrs Duff & Phelps as Administrators of Rangers PLC do not care a solitary jot about the future of Scottish Football. Why should they? It is not their job. They, quite rightly, are only interested in getting the best deal for ” The Club” and the creditors of Rangers PLC. They have warned all and sundry that the Blue Knights are not the only hat in the ring and that no one should be surprised if another buyer appears out of the … well…. Blue… so to speak.

Are you listening SPL and SFA? Do you hear what these guys are saying? They are officers of court and they are trying to tell you something!

If automatic entry is allowed to the SPL, it makes the the value of what Duff & Phelps are trying to sell somewhat greater. After years of Rangers being on the market and of interest to no one, suddenly the club may well be of interest to unknown parties in the Far East or from somewhere in America. It is hinted that these parties are big bucks players, people with real money etc etc etc.

So– where have they been for the last 4 years then? Hiding? Prison? In Hospital? Playing Bingo? No– something told them that they should not invest in Rangers over this period. Who can blame them as only a mad man would buy the club with the Big Tax case unresolved!! At least that is what some have said in the past…. can’t quite remember who!

However, stop and think. Does anyone really believe that a Middle Eastern Sheikh wants to buy Rangers because he can’t wait for trips to Dunfermiline, or St Johnstone, or Ross County next year? Would such a buyer be interested in the ressurection of natural Scottish talent and the Scotland team? Would such a buyer be keen on financial fair play and be happy to share some wealth about with Dundee Utd, Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts? Or even Celtic for that matter?

I have been told before that there are those abroad who view a Rangers Club as being an ideal investment to simply get on the cheap, load with hugely paid footballing superstars, who would gain easy entry to the Champions league and the riches of Europe where they would play the real competition. Unlike the 80’s Celtic could compete with such a master plan as they have the fan base and infratructure to make a decent fist of any such fight and as I have said before there are ways whereby Celtic can increase revenue substantially and so take then to another place. But the rest of Scottish Football? Such a plan is designed to ensure that everyone else– possibly even Celtic– are reduced to also rans. No Competition Required — Thanks, Win at all costs. Success gained and competition bought off with the Dollar, The Shekel, The Ruble or the— well choose your currency!

However, the rest of Scottish Football may well suffer like never before. If a Manchester City type owner– say someone who was prepared to pay wages of £250,000 per week to a player who doesn’t play ( think Tevez )– enters Scottish Football with an invitation that says all our sporting integrity can be bought for a price, then can that really in any way be viewed as a good thing?

Come on down, the price is right!

Celtic at least are geared in such a way that no single party can absolutely own the club outright. That is Fergus McCann’s greatest legacy– that the future of the club lies in the hands of thise who know the History. With no disrespect to anyone at Manchester City, can anyone show me the footage of Roberto Mancini’s greatest goals in the days of Main Road? No didn’t think so. Can the owners was lyrical about the days of Summerbee, Bell, Lee and Todd? Na– you would be as well asking them to talk about the geography of the sea of tranquility! Manchester City is just a chattel– a rich man’s play thing, a toy– to be played with or cast aside when the moment and mood suits!

Such a new owner will jettison McCoist, McDowall and Durrant without batting an eye lid. They will do whatever they want and acquire whatever money needs to buy perhaps– and the sad thing about that is that deep down the majority of Rangers fans won’t care. They didn’t protest when David Murray took the club into private ownership, as long as success followed. Whatever “traditions” Rangers may have may well be jettisoned altogether—- possibly no bad thing— if an oligarch steps this way with chequebook in hand.

Celtic are a big club, and can get bigger still. Such an owner over Ibrox way may well be a great thing for Celtic football club in terms of the wealth stakes and the opportunities that may come for the big two to leave Scottish Football.

However, does the rest of Scottish Football really want that? Where will they be in all of this?

Oh and then there is the Third estate. What would the press make of such a situation? Would they welcome it? Is it a good idea?

Well I have a proposal for then to consider too.

Say a new television deal was to be struck for the SPL with every club getting at least £2Million per year from TV rights. Yep £2million for the bottom club rising to £20Million for the champions. 5 year deal to give it security and none of this nonsense about 4 Celtic v Rangers games each season. Real fair play– and all that.

What a deal. It secures the financuial future of Scottish Football.

The down side is that the offer is from Al Jazeera and in return they want exclusive broadcast rights- both television and radio- with a strict limit on print journalists and photographers at each and every game. Oh and the games can only be shown in the far east- no broadcasting in Scotland!

After all they are paying the money and it is a free market economy right?

And the fact that you can’t actually see the matches in Scotland will only drive crowds up– won’t it? That is what everyone wants, isn’t it?

Jabba, Shug, Scoop, Jangle, Spiersy etc– all those in favour raise their hands!

Rob, Davie Tanner, Pat— you will all get other jobs right? You can always focus on the SFL right?

Clyde and Radio Scotland can go back to being music channels and provide such much needed culture and increase the quality broadcasts of Janice Forsyth, Eadie Stark and various others who are already squeezed for airtime– undeservedly so!

Scotland would be better for such a plan wouldn’t it?

After all money is King…. right?

This supposed RFC offer to HMRC. Only the Administrators could have made it ? The Administrators do not have the money to actually pay any offer. They could only make an offer and then relay to potential buyers that this offer has been accepted by HMRC.

  19. A mild, pleasant morning here in North Ayrshire.

Quite right, Neil. They do us down at every opportunity, while attempting to spin straw into gold with the catastrophe at Ibrox.

Look at how the shameful failure to pay a debt to a fellow SPL member has been polished up and presented as proof that Scottish football needs Rangers.

They can, and do, make it up.

    3. What transfer fee did the players who took a wage cut get written into their contracts?

    4. Why would HMRC baulk at doing a deal with a Whyte who only ripped them off for a roughly £15m, but would happily do a deal with guys who were party to them getting ripped off for roughly £35m (plus interest and fines)?

  29. Yesterday we were talking about a difficult match, perhaps the hardest we would face in the remainder of the season. Today we even closer to a treble. It’s a good time to be a Celtic fan.

Meanwhile down the road we can watch the club that was once our main rival as it is near death, with just one last rattle coming from it. Drowning in debt and desperately seeking a saviour, but its fans are still delusional enough to think that a rescuer will emerge.

Yes, it’s a very good time to be a Celtic fan.
