  1. Is Celtic Pronounced “Keltic” or “Seltic”?

“Keltic” versus “seltic” is one of those “religious issues.” I’ve checked all the major English dictionaries, including my two personal favorites, the American Heritage Unabridged third Edition and the Oxford English Dictionary. All of the dictionaries agree; either pronunciation is acceptable, though “keltic” is preferred, and is usually listed first.

I prefer “keltic,” and so do most of the English-speaking Medievalists and Celticists (that’s “kelticists”) I know. There are some who argue that “keltic” is the “correct” pronunciation because both Irish and Welsh use the letter C to indicate the sound represented by the letter K in English. This is a spurious argument since the ancient Celts did not refer to themselves as “Celts.” The word Celt is derived from Keltoi, the name the Greeks gave the “barbarian” tribes along the Danube and Rhone rivers. The Romans borrowed the Greek name, but spelled it Celtae, and the word entered French in the form Celtes, from which English derives Celt. The argument over whether “selt” or “kelt” is “correct” is probably ultimately related to the word entering English twice, once through French, and once, probably through the publications of German scholars, from the Greek Keltoi, hence “kelt.” (See the etymology and usage note in the American Heritage Dictionary.

Logo of the Celtic Football Club, GlasgowWhen I’m asked whether “keltic” or “seltic” is correct, I like to point out that by preferring “keltic” one avoids confusing the speakers of an Indo-European language with professional basketball players (in Boston) or football players (in Glasgow). But, either pronunciation is technically “korrect.”

Really sorry to hear you feel any kind of fear for your kids whilst on your recruitment drive, whilst many Celtic fans and some in here don’t particularly trust the trust, I would find it it really disturbing to think ANY Celtic fan would approach another with vitriol or threat of violence, a blog is very different to real life

    ,

I myself cannot really put what I feel in writing, so in the main my posts are short and hopefully to the point, but I would never back a fellow fans threats to another wether they were right or wrong, the media and particularly jabba’s PR is hell bent on deviding us, and I feel they have in the last couple of years succeeded , whilst I don’t have any real feelings for the trust, I wish you success as I know you to be a good Celtic man who would only do this because you feel it. If the wean wants to bring her piggy bank with her, I would certainly keep a wee eye on her for you ..lol .. She’ll be fine mo chara

Sadly, I’m having to arrange for someone else to bring my 12 year old daughter to meet me after the recruitment drive because I worry for her safety after the vitriol from posts I’ve read on here.

Seriously? Talk about an attention seeking drama queen, there’s not a chance in hell any Celtic supporter would disrupt or cause any disturbance at you Jehovah’s witness style recruitment /grooming drive, we may all have different opinions but to say you feel threatened by some in here is a Wee bit ott, but then again shock and awe, is the CT way I suppose, PS will you be holding a flare so we know where you are, PPS a Wee bit of advice by the way, Masty cant look after himself never mind your daughter ffs, your daughter has a better chance of being safe standing beside you wearing an orange sash, than with

with him she would land up in the London RD. Cop shop, trust me, I know.

Good luck with your drive. You’ll need it.

Surely Ross County to win with both teams scoring is overpriced (think the best is 7/1) the dandy dons have just lost their best player the goalie……

    Anyway off to mass

Monthehibees nothing to do with Sevco I have the Hibees to win that league, hopefully Falkirk are their main rivals once the serial bill dodgers get a points deduction……still far too much talk on the radio about bigger leagues they must be fretting

Enjoy Mass, I do the vigil, I’m off to the gym. Gets me ready for a telly marathon of football. Ross County first, without key players may struggle but a young lad I know well will hopefully be in the side, so fingers crossed. Then Der Kloppmiester will finish off the LVG reign, enjoy a bit of Arsenal before Barca rounds off the day.

Quite enjoy leaving the bun fight on here to those that care, I will enjoy the football. Friday night football was great for me, and can Celtic start flogging away season tickets? suit me fine as well.

    Hail! Hail!

  12. Morning all.

I was just wondering if, now that we have signed(?) another CD, could we play Efe Ambrose in the defensive midfield role? His reading of the game and first time passing could be a great asset to the team, imo. It’s when he dwells on the ball that he gives me palpitations.

  13. Good morning friends from whiteout EK. No snow fell since last night but just about up to our shins in it! TO walk or to drive, that is the question.

  14. Gerryfaethebrig, thats fine,i wont be falling out with fellow supporters,as for the trust,i went along to one of the trusts meetings a few yrs ago ,in St Marys in Abercromby St, i joined then, but as the yrs went by,i have lost my membership card, so hopefully someone from the trust can get my details, and i will gladly give a donation,to the Celtic Trust.

  15. Morning all.

An enjoyable read perusing through last nights posts a lot of good Celtic posts and a few good laughs too.

With regards the singing about Celtic greats on Fridays night. I can’t recall any Only one King Billy that’s McNeill. That would have been appropriate, in my opinion, I’m happy to be corrected if H.T. comes on and says he started that one too.

  16. Never seen the guy but buying a player from Midtylland, the most well known exponent of ‘moneyball’, tends to suggest, to me anyway, that ‘they’ can afford to let the guy go.

In other words, they think he’s a donkey, or he’s come to the end of his natural shelf life.

I hope he’s in some way more suited to the way we play football than their way, otherwise I think we’ve been had.

  17. Parkhead

I’d like to see big Efe as a def mid. He is very much a confidence player and knowing that he’d have cover behind him would free him up to use his pace and movement to take the ball forward.

    Cheers

  18. If Sviatchenko passes medical and signs today/tomorrow I would expect Efe to be sold by the end of this window, or in the summer at the latest

  19. Gary67

I hope you are wrong, his pace gives us options we would miss. He’s been covering our forward thinking defenders for a while now. There have been plenty times when has he chased back to cover a full back or his defensive partner when they have pushed up.

He has his moments, but I think we’d miss him more than is appreciated.

    Cheers
