Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

  4. Chairbhoy,

Sometimes I wonder what motivates Celtic players these days – I’m more and more convinced it’s not the glorious sight of the green & white hoops

    ——

    Interesting question.

I think we all know how important money is

When we read all these stories in the press about players not wanting to play / being petulant / feigning injury we know we have had this at our club.

Remember Viduka and his comment about not giving 100% , or Thom rolling on the ground at Ibrokes and Tommy Burns ignoring him?

It would be naive to think that we are without these “problem children” in more recent times.

Off to Pittodrie (hospitality) to see the sheep doing the mini-huns. Depending on cqn for updates, can’t listen to shortbread for a live Celtic game.

  7. I mean too strong for the current Sevco team in my last post…..Not the one filled with intergalactic stars if Charlie Bighands would have relocated to English lower leagues.

  8. With two weeks before we play Aberdeen then ole Meelan the following Tuesday maybe today would be a time to make a couple of changes.

Normal defence with maybe Darnell in for Lustig.

    Broonie and Kayal,

Then three like Forrest, Pukki and Derk Bo.

    Amido up top.

Subs to come on Biton and Rogic, plus Stokes.

Give recovery time to Chas, Kris, Ledley and Sammi.

    WOW….Sky must be reeling

  11. Rather than complain about the kick off time Neil should see it as an opportunity to play his new signings and fringe players to see what they really have to offer.

In earlier times, Sky would have filled the gap by acquiring BT Sports. Those days have gone, thank the Lord.

If Scotland is independent in 2015, it will presumably have to set up some sort of new national broadcaster. Celtic TV should bid to play the role. Peter Lawwell runs the country after all.

  13. BRTH…..The English media have been very balanced and fair in their coverage of the troubles in Amsterdam. It is not big news to them but they have highlighted provocation from Dutch police and Ajax hooligans.

Haven’t had the misfortune to read or hear the agenda driven crap from Scottish MSM.

That’s the way it will stay as I’m not going to get myself annoyed and wound up at the shite these cretins report.

  14. Re Lourdes

I went to Lourdes in 1975 as a helper with a pigrimage run by the Catholic Union of the Sick. Very humbling experience.

One of my co-helpers was a guy who made a few extra shilings by selling scarves, flags etc outside CP and Poundland on alternate Saturdays. His biggest pay day of the year was the Orange Walk in Belfast. What the zombies didn’t know was that every penny he made that day was handed over to a nun in Lourdes who ran a hostel for young volunteer helpers. That year the amount so generously donated by the huns was over £700.

Whenever anyone mentions Lourdes, I can’t help having a chuckle.

  16. Joe FilippiS Haircut the blogs has evolved over the years which is magic as far as I am concerned. Our gracious host Paul67 has added magazines, annuals and lifted the technology as well as unfailingly adding at least one new article every day. Hail Hail Paul67. I read CQN every day, for the very same reasons that I first read it. Living about as far away from my home as is physically possible I miss many things , my family and Celtic. CQN allows me to connect and share. I have only ever met one CQN’er but it doesn’t matter, I know that if I did I would feel like I was with friends. There are many great characters on here , I laugh more than not, and also many simple Celtic fans just like me who want to share. My life would be poorer without CQn, some days harder. I am up late tonight , got some visitors coming over for a curry and they always taste better next day so cooking up a storm. Finishing a glass then aff tae ma scratcher. When I wake up my first thought will be what’s the score and then I will look to CQN to find out who are todays heros and villains. Like I say without reading what you lot are doing thinking and seeing, life would be less rich. Three points tomorrow in the highlands will be a good CL handover cure. Have a great weekend all. Hail Hail and see yees laters.

Back in my youth,a lass from Stafford and I went to a very quaint country pub south of there called summat like The Crooked Billet.

It was essentially an old shack which had been done up,and the main part of its charm was that it was falling down. It’s foundations were so poor that not a right-angle could be seen,

  20. Clashcitybhoy @ 10:45,

Yes your right, obviously it’s these guys careers and it’s a short one, money Will be a huge factor.

A friend of mine in Celtic who is a professional musician was telling me t’uther day a colleague of his was doing a gig at a function when he noticed Paul Elliot there.

Being a Chelsea fan he broke a few rules and went and chatted to him, what was the greatest time of your career? he asked.

Without hesitation Paul said his time at Celtic.

Of course not all players are going to get it and as you rightly say you can be dealing with some “unusual” personalities but you would hope once recompenced the majority would be giving their all for the Jersey.

    I maybe naive…

The nun that ran the hostel for folks in Lourdes?

Would that be the legendary Sister Benine ( spelling? ) who was in fact thrown out of her order for disobeying…. well orders…. by refusing to return from Lourdes?

She then set up her own unrecognised order and opened the hostel in Lourdes where you could go and stay for nothing in a simple room provided you helped wash the dishes and provide a bit of help.

She also used to employ a strict curfew saying if you weren’t in by 11pm then you were locked out and she didn’t agree with folk going to the pubs and having a bit of a laugh!

I stayed with her for the better part of a week one time and struck a deal with a priest from Droheda who was also staying there with his housekeeper— at least that is what he told me she was but I often wondered about that?

Anyway, he and the housekeeper would go out at 5AM every morning for what could only be described as “The Right Early Mass” and so as long as I was outside at that time they would let me in for a few hours kip with Benine none the wiser!

Benine was a real rebel– she was shunned by Rome and everywhere else– might even have been ex communicated for starting an unofficial holy order without going through the proper channels.

She was a French woman who only learned to speak English with an Irish Accent — mind you there are a few of those in Lourdes!

  31. Interesting discussion on CQN past and present, I’ve got to agree with those who say evolution is inevitable but I would like to comment.

Since ghuys have got to know each other and groups of fhriends have joined en masse it can feel a bit clique.

However you do feel the camaraderie and the joint efforts is what have gotten CQN achievements, from the great charity work to the magazine to AGM resolutions etc…

The couple of things I do miss is CQN the oracle.

A place where Tims from all over the Globe would regularly post.

Singapore, South America, India etc and you could come on and ask any question.

Now I feel if your not in the know don’t ask the question as your Celtic credenntials Will be suspect.

A bit like the wee boy in the class that won’t put his hand up and ask the question for fear of ridicule.

Still it was a great forum then, it’s a great forum now and I thank Paul and his ever growing band of talented Tims that make this site so great.
