Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

  2. Top of the morning to you all from a wet and grey Fife where the earlier sunshine has taken the day off.

Hopefully we can bounce back from a poor display in midweek and get some of the zip back into our play.

Maybe overshadowing the football on Wednesday was the disgraceful scenes before the match and I hope that the one particularly brutal plain-clothes policeman is brought to book. I never thought that I would say this but the Amsterdam police made our own FoCUS lot look almost competent.

That may be going too far right enough and I am sounding like Major Gowens, the gin-soaked retired Fawlty Towers resident, who when an American tourist told Basil Fawlty that he ran the “crummiest, shoddiest, worst-run hotel in the whole of Western Europe”, sprang to his landlords defence exclaiming: “No! No, I won’t have that! There’s a place in Eastbourne.”

Bhoy, the mention of Sister Marie Benigne brought back many memories. Stayed there often and got a true sense of Lourdes. On one occasion returning from the Blessed Sacrament Procession I encountered Sister at the door of the hostel in a very serious mood. Someone had just walked off with £400 that she had left on her desk. Later in the evening I asked her how she was feeling about it and she replied “Poor lad, he must have needed the money more than I did.”

Sister was not French, she was from Liverpool but had stayed in France for so long that she lost her original accent. She was an incredible woman. Walked up the road with her one evening and she kept looking at the bars saying “the devils places”. I was told that I should not even look into the bars.

Incidentally did she tell you that the footbaths as she referred to them, actually the bidets, were not be used for anything other than the cleansing of the feet?

    Good day to all

A beautiful sunny day up on the Moray coast.

Looks set fair for Victoria Park

Interseting article today in the Hootsman about a stance taken by Nairn County the highland league side.

County are launching a media campaign with videos and article in their matchday programmes criticising Pay Day loan companies and giving advice on how to tackle these unscrupulous lenders. Support has been given by Fergus Ewing of the SNP.

It stikes me as strange perhaps that a lowly, allthough very well funded HL side has come up with this and that no larger side with a greater fanbase and media profile should lead this.

    # 10 Freemasons cannot testify against each other in court

Witnesses in courts of law must swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. However, Freemasons consider the betrayal of another member of the lodge as worse than perjury and therefore some would rather hide the truth or lie than testify against a brother mason. Freemasons appearing in court will be familiar with one item used by the judge. The gavel is a symbol of authority among freemasons and it is used by significant figures within the organisation such as the Worshipful Master, the Senior Warden and the Junior Warden.

  21. Peter Grant,

Just what is it about this guy. He now seems to be a regular on Shortbread and BT Sport.

He seems to have great difficulty in saying Celtic.

I don’t think anyone describes as as the old firm in the media at the moment.

Is this really needed to make a shilling, Peter?

  22. BRTH

You are spot on. It was Sister Benine. What a character. BTW, she knew the source of the funds from my pal and it made her smile.

  23. Greetings All,

As requested Pete The Beat this is not a reply but merely an observation.

Generally agree with your sentiments. How many times in everyday conversation do you hear “Aye the old days are the best, or not as good as before”

We can all reminisce but nothing can move forward or flourish by living in the past.

Grow up lads, times change. Evolution is not just for the animal species.

To me cliques are sad, sometimes sinister, hamper progress and remind me of the masons.

    IMO of course.

The Dutch are the most arrogant nation on the planet.

    Why?

Because they are all “Fall Tuckers” and we are just…

    …short “Sesra”.
