End of a great Celtic team

410

The treble was won on Saturday with a bit more anxiety than many of us anticipated.  Just as we discussed and hoped for last week, Kyogo was the man of the moment again.  Celtic have played in three cup finals when Ange Postecoglou has been in charge, the opener on Saturday was the fifth goal scored by the club in that time and the fifth by Kyogo.  The player is an inextricably linked to his manager’s success as Henrik Larsson was to Martin O’Neill’s.

I can scarcely remember a more effective winger than Liel Abada, certainly not for someone still only 21.  He ghosted into the box, then timed his forward run perfectly to latch onto Callum McGregor’s cross, giving Celtic an unassailable lead.  His added-time cross for Jota to complete the scoring was a piece of craft that largely went missing for Celtic during the final.

Inverness were miles out of their depth but defended well and on 84 minutes scored the best goal of the game.  A diving header is always easy on the eye, even when it hits the back of your own net.  It was never going to be, for the Highlanders.

We will look back on that final, on this last month, as a time when a great Celtic team emptied its tank.  Whether or not this is linked to off-field events is moot, a refresh is needed if these incredibly high standards are to endure.

It was painful listening to Ange duck questions on his future after the game.  In doing so, he answered, nonetheless.  We’ll talk more at the appropriate moment, in the meantime, as Bill wrote, ‘If it were done…., then ‘t were well it were done quickly.’

Let’s get on with it.

In the last 7 years Celtic have won 17 major trophies.

During that same period Spurs have won a High Court challenge to their stadium being rebuilt.

On the contrary. The agricultural defenders are in Scotland and are tolerated by poor refereeing.

Kyogo may thrive with more protection.

Well worth a £20 m punt for any team with a bottomless pit of money. Especially a team losing Harry Kane for mega bucks.

I also believe Kyogo has something to prove after his European exploits with us.

Hopefully we get another season from him, but I am well aware of his age.

  3. Its to the Celtic PLAYERS CREDIT, that they got the League and Cup over the line, IF they knew that our Manager was chucking it a few weeks ago.

I wonder if ANY of our Japanese Bhoys feel BETRAYED by our Ex Manager. I certainly do ?

For those who are wishing our EX Manager all the best etc ( and I get that sentiment ), will they still feel the same WHEN/IF He starts to poach our best Players for Spurs ?

If AP is away I’d be looking to move on many of his signings ASAP. Kyogo, Hatate and Maeda (who I think downed tools weeks ago) have been excellent, but they are his bhoys. I do not think a new manager will get the best out of them. Hopefully we can get decent money for them and I would get what we can for Bernabei, Kobiashi, Iwata and Oh.

If we can retain the GK, back 4, CalMac and Jota it will give the new manager a decent platform to build, but I can’t stress enough how we need to monetise the Japanese lads lest their value withers away.

So Celtic win a back-to-back league title, beating Sevco twice, drawing once and losing at Ibrox AFTER the league was won.

We win a back-to-back League Cup, beating Sevco 2-1 in the final.

To complete a world record 8th treble we win the Scottish Cup, having eliminated Sevco in the semi-final.

Yet according to you, we’re still not far enough ahead of Sevco.

  6. These kinda situations bring out my petulant side.

It’s probably not protocol given you need stock market announcements etc.

But, Announce Jessie Marsch as manager whist Ange is still in talks or on a jet.

You need a wee bit of needle sometimes.

  7. I SHOULD have been overjoyed and jubilant on Saturday night after or TREBLE Win….but in all honesty I wasnt, as I watched our EX Manager walk around the Hampdump Pitch.

It is now Monday afternoon, and I STILL havent been out for some Beers since last Wednesday.

I SHOULD have been DRUNK on HAPPINESS these last 36 Hours or so, but our EX Manager put a real dampener on any ” Celebrations” for this particular Celtic supporter.

I sincerely hope that Spurs get RELEGATED as soon as possible.

  8. BIG JIMMY

It’s extremely unlikely he was offered the job until after the Hibs game. Spurs offered the job to the Feyenoord manager and only moved on after Feyenoord demanded too big a compensation fee around the time of the game in Edinburgh.

  9. Since Jock Stein, am I right in saying the longest single managerial stint at Celtic was MON?

On my lunch break, so non Google guess work here – we’ve pretty much had two/ three/ four year tenures since the late 70s? Big Billy being the four year one(s)?

I’m disappointed in Ange, but there are £15 million reasons he was never staying. If he has any love for us then he will leave Kyogo and CCV well alone. OR get us EPL stupid money for them.

Marsch might be a good shout to replace him.

Yes, let’s make the new manager’s job so much harder by offloading our key players just because they are “Ange’s boys”.

    Honest to god 🙈

What a load of absolute twaddle.

The players are professionals. You don’t just show them the door because the manager who brought them in has left.

The task must be to retain our players in spite of Ange moving to the EPL. Most of us agreed weeks ago that we only need 4 or 5 new signings for a crack at Europe. Feck that. While we bring in a new manager, let’s make his job much harder by making it 9 or 10 signing needed.

    Aye ok then.

  16. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 5TH JUNE 2023 1:52 PM

There is zero chance of Spurs chasing Kyogo, unless it’s all the way back to Scotland. Brilliant as he is for us, he’d be swallowed up by the big bullying EPL defenders. No top English side would go near him.

    —-

Agreed. In fact, I’d not be surprised if he was still here in a couple of years. I was surprised Ange left after only two seasons. He didn’t quite walk the talk on that front. Anyway, I’ve been less susceptible to grieving departures since Kenny left. Maybe we’ll sign a defender over six feet now. SMSM will be loving this. He had them on toast.

A fine post, Tom. I feel too many posters too often ignore facts when giving their opinions.

  18. If or WHEN our Ex Manager fancies poaching any of our best players for Spurs, you can BET good money that HE will be advising the Spurs Board on Transfer Fees that are ROCK BOTTOM !

“A bit more anxiety than many of us expected…” It’s like some people here don’t even watch the games. Oh, and if it is Rodgers, I’m glad I said nothing when he left.

  22. Jesus at Arsenal is only a few centimetres taller than Kyogo and does just fine in England. As Ange is a 1 trick pony, having Kyogo’s clever runs in front of very gifted midfielders (they are signing Kulesevski permenantly & looking at Barnes & Maddison) who can find him would make sense.

Don’t think Hatate’s ready for the EPL and as I said before CCV’s brand at Spurs is a joke. Very ballsy thing to do if he wants to win over the fans.

My pal’s a lifelong Leeds fan; most of his compadres think Jesse Marsch/Ted Lasso is an absolute fud.

Here’s a leftfield but continuity inspired idea; bring in Graham Arnold (Socceroos coach) to work alongside Harry K and Aaron. The money would be right and Arnie would jump at a Euro chance I reckon.

Arnold has a lot of similar qualities to AP; mibby not so much attack flair, but knows how to organise a side and work with young players; Under pressure, he has regenerated the Socceroos repute at the recent WC.

The board would be well advised to brief any new manager on the way the media up here operates ,as it must come as a shock to anyone who has little knowledge of the ‘kulchur’,particularly in the central belt .

I’m sure it’s one of the things Ange won’t miss, although he may well miss things like winning multiple trophies , setting world records and fan adulation.

  28. Silver City – I was just picking up on that opening libe about the win being ‘anxious’.

I’ve never been less anxious watching Celtic other than in recent dead rubbers and pre season friendlies.

It was a walk in the park.

  29. The Battered Bunnet on

Allowing that the Spurs connection is concrete, it’s something of a surprise given the recent history of Scottish club managers.

With just 2 years at Celtic, Postecoglu seems to have landed a bigger job than anyone preceding him in the last 30 years.

In that time Walter Smith getting the Everton job is perhaps a high water mark, although MON would point out that Aston Villa had won the European Cup in living memory, something they didn’t threaten to repeat when they appointed Stevie Ge-rarrrd.

Alex McLeish got Birmingham City (after 2 minutes as Scotland coach) having swapped titles with MON in the preceding 4 years. Rodgers went to Leicester. Arguably the most successful of them all was Gordon Strachan, who then went on to 2nd tier Middlesbrough. Lenny got the comic-tragedy that was Blackburn Rovers. Rony Deila with back-to-back titles got Valerenga.

What’s changed? Certainly there’s nothing in Ange’s record in European competition that suggests he has the wherewithal to outperform WGS or MON in elite competition. BR had track record with Liverpool and was a known quantity in the Premiership.

I thought we were pretty safe with Ange. I did not think he would move for a bottom half team and I couldn’t see a top half team appointing him.

All of which proves the old adage – you don’t need eyes to see. You need vision.

  30. Melvin Udall on

Like every other Celtic fan, I’m delighted Ange took the job when he did, got us turned around so quickly, put a very good squad together, won with style and put the Huns in their place AGAIN.

I’m also fine with him using us as a stepping stone to the riches of the EPL for what could be his last big contract.

What doesn’t sit well with me is the bullsh#t he spouted about the journey, the future, what we’re building here, quoting Tommy Burns at trophy day etc, whilst knowing full well he was for the off at the first decent EPL offer.

He can feck right off for me and I’ll be laughing when he’s out of a job by Christmas. Although, so will he, as he’ll be fully paid up by Spurs for the remainder of his contract and well done to him on doing this as a life choice for him and his family. No grudges there.

  31. I was gutted when Rodgers left and furious about the way he did it.
