End of a great Celtic team

410

The treble was won on Saturday with a bit more anxiety than many of us anticipated.  Just as we discussed and hoped for last week, Kyogo was the man of the moment again.  Celtic have played in three cup finals when Ange Postecoglou has been in charge, the opener on Saturday was the fifth goal scored by the club in that time and the fifth by Kyogo.  The player is an inextricably linked to his manager’s success as Henrik Larsson was to Martin O’Neill’s.

I can scarcely remember a more effective winger than Liel Abada, certainly not for someone still only 21.  He ghosted into the box, then timed his forward run perfectly to latch onto Callum McGregor’s cross, giving Celtic an unassailable lead.  His added-time cross for Jota to complete the scoring was a piece of craft that largely went missing for Celtic during the final.

Inverness were miles out of their depth but defended well and on 84 minutes scored the best goal of the game.  A diving header is always easy on the eye, even when it hits the back of your own net.  It was never going to be, for the Highlanders.

We will look back on that final, on this last month, as a time when a great Celtic team emptied its tank.  Whether or not this is linked to off-field events is moot, a refresh is needed if these incredibly high standards are to endure.

It was painful listening to Ange duck questions on his future after the game.  In doing so, he answered, nonetheless.  We’ll talk more at the appropriate moment, in the meantime, as Bill wrote, ‘If it were done…., then ‘t were well it were done quickly.’

Let’s get on with it.

    Great news! Delighted for you!

Some things are more important than fitba’!!

  2. Must admit, I’m more interested in our next manager, than our last one. The king is dead and all that.

However, I feel that Ange has left a very bespoke team. Very niche. Very Ange. This cannot be ignored in our managerial search. Do we look to recruit a manager to complement the existing squad or are we looking at a larger trading summer? It’s a tough one.

Finally, I always disliked the phrase ‘in Ange we trust’. Vapid and without any real point. I wonder which CQNer was last to post this?

    P.S. I wouldn’t take Rodger’s back. He’s a snake! And can feck right off.

He also got figured out by Beale and Gerard before he chucked it with us.

Let’s get a new, up and coming manager in with a good idea of how the game should be played (the Celtic Way).

Excellent news! Reminds us where football ranks in reality.

    God Bless you

  5. WeeFra – That is really fantastic news. What a weight lifted off your shoulders.

  6. Uncle Jimmy,

We’ve good footballers and think they can adapt to tweaks in the system like the inverted full backs for example. I think we’ll see some big churn in the squad, we’ve got good assets to sell and a very decent non-EPL level budget.

    Fantastic news buddy!

Was a bit gutted reading your plight on here.

Did not expect that news for you, given what you’d said.

    That’s made my day. 😃👍

    Ange who?

This kind of thing puts football into perspective for all of us.

    Brendan Rodgers, Steve Clarke? 😩

Hopefully our next manager has been identified by Mark Lawell again & not DD 👍

*aye nae kiddin DD wanted tae give it tae Joe Kinnear, I believe it was Allan McDonald that talked him out of it, on the other hand he had successfully negotiated with Guus Hiddink until the kaiser stepped in this time and told him, without any fear of contradiction, that MON was the mhan for the role

Thanks ghuys. After losing my lovely wife of 52 years just over a year ago, I thought things couldn’t get any worse. Devastating to say the least. Now, thanks to good wishes and prayers from here, things are on the up, BIG TIME. Now I’ve just got a cataract to get done. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. HH

  12. I think DD will push for BR. Available and knows how everything works, excellent coach and proven Hun skelper.

His character is questionable, his ability is not.

Ask him to sign a two-year contract with option of a third. Back him properly and keep PL away from him.

  13. Delighted Weefrathe, just met you the once at CQN Corner thought you were a grand wee mhan, Hope you have many happy years ahead of you following the Hoops.

Great news, been a real testing time for you recently so fantastic to hear this

  16. Just has to be the Bodo Glint guy. His wee team made us look like monkeys with their very fast football

Beale was right – Ange is a lucky man.

Two years ago he was 55 with a solid but not remarkable CV managing in the obscurity of the J League. A failed short time in Greece. Zero profile in Europe

Offered the Celtic job because Howe’s backroom staff wouldn’t come, now offered the Spurs job because they’d failed with a few others above him on their list.

You do make your own luck to an extent – his strength of character and refusal to compromise his style of football appealed to us and fits in with what Spurs need at the moment, but he didnt do anything remarkable in Europe in his time at Celtic.

Its a story thats unlikely too be repeated.

What makes you think DD feels any less shafted than PL by Rodgers?

He could have done a lot of damage to DD’s business, people like him dont forget

  19. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced it will be Rodgers.

He is good, he is available, he knows the Club, he knows the Scottish game, he is on record as saying he wants to Manage Club again, he did grow up a Celtic Supporter albeit it didn’t stop him ditching us to go to Leicester.

I haven’t forgiven him for that and he has an awful lot to do to convince the Celtic Support but I do think he would be a certainty to win The League next year.

Thank you for that. A long time since I’ve been at CQN corner for health reasons, had leg ulcers. Let my ST go because I couldn’t attend games, but kept in the family. Never used it for 2 seasons so just decided to let it go. HH yes, hopefully a long and healthy future for me. Thank you so much my fhriend. HH

It’s interesting how people infer things to suit their view. Nowhere did I say any of the players were not professional. I merely suggested that IMHO a new manager may not get the best out of them as APwas instrumental in bringing them to Celtic. If correct, it would suggest we have seen the best of them in Celtic jerseys, which means 1. it will be difficult to take team performance to another level and 2. their value as Celtic players is at its peak.

Apologies to those whom I offended for being rational.

That is a fair point and if Desmond nurses a grudge against Rodgers that blows my theories out of the water but Desmond is a pragmatist as well, and if he believes he will do a good job could give it the OK.
