End of a great Celtic team

410

The treble was won on Saturday with a bit more anxiety than many of us anticipated.  Just as we discussed and hoped for last week, Kyogo was the man of the moment again.  Celtic have played in three cup finals when Ange Postecoglou has been in charge, the opener on Saturday was the fifth goal scored by the club in that time and the fifth by Kyogo.  The player is an inextricably linked to his manager’s success as Henrik Larsson was to Martin O’Neill’s.

I can scarcely remember a more effective winger than Liel Abada, certainly not for someone still only 21.  He ghosted into the box, then timed his forward run perfectly to latch onto Callum McGregor’s cross, giving Celtic an unassailable lead.  His added-time cross for Jota to complete the scoring was a piece of craft that largely went missing for Celtic during the final.

Inverness were miles out of their depth but defended well and on 84 minutes scored the best goal of the game.  A diving header is always easy on the eye, even when it hits the back of your own net.  It was never going to be, for the Highlanders.

We will look back on that final, on this last month, as a time when a great Celtic team emptied its tank.  Whether or not this is linked to off-field events is moot, a refresh is needed if these incredibly high standards are to endure.

It was painful listening to Ange duck questions on his future after the game.  In doing so, he answered, nonetheless.  We’ll talk more at the appropriate moment, in the meantime, as Bill wrote, ‘If it were done…., then ‘t were well it were done quickly.’

Let’s get on with it.

  1. I detest Rodgers. He is an excellent coach/manager. I am surprised Spurs didn’t grab him. He would improve every player there, play much more attractive football (and after two years fall out with the board and after three be sacked.) If he was re-appointed at Celtic, I would support him and would thoroughly enjoy our continued domination of the Scottish game. Would he do better than before in the CL? I don’t know. That would be the test. If he did do well, he’d be off pretty sharpish, I’d imagine. But I wouldn’t be bitter. I’d expect it.

Physical nature of the English teams can get them passed a good number of continental opposition , but fair point you make

Still think we can’t go back to Brendan and tippy tappy ….

To be honest , I’m just hacked off thinking about it too much

The unsettling speculation would be there from the start. And the goodwill from the support would evaporate pretty quickly if results went against him early on.

The Huns think Gerard and Beale had his number, in his last derby we were completely outplayed by them

  6. Celtic40me,

Getting a progressive coach on the up, a few years younger than Ange (and maybe de-risking the ‘time to make up’ factor) would still be my preference too but again wouldn’t be averse to Rodgers, who will spout shit and with a contract that means he pays us £100m if he as much as looks longingly at an English team in the next 3 years.

Not that we didn’t know it already, but the EPL is crazy.

  8. If “Chompers” gets the nod, then with some sadness I would take him back…………we need to maintain dominance over the hun mindset……….while working on continuing the playing style of a relentless winning Celtic.

We can’t go backwards………..Europe needs improvement.

In the boozer after a huns game @ Greyskull. Brendan comes on the box to speak..

Que, music stopped, songs ceased in full flow and the packed raucous pub goes silent to listen. Totally silent as each word was digested.

I have no ill will towards Ange but the image I had of him as a man of impeccable honesty and integrity has taken a knock . The way the Spurs thing has been handled , the display after the cup final , the almost cynical reference to Tommy Burns ,all rings a bit hollow .

I’ll take no more interest in Spurs than I did before , and Zero interest in Ange’s career . I can see him back in Australia if the Spurs gig flops.

So glad you had positive news. I hope to take you for a few beers after we have watched the mighty Glasgow Celtic. Simple pleasures. You’ll never walk alone F. 👍🇮🇪

  25. am prepared to believe that Ange meant the things he said about Celtic and the fans and Tommy Burns- and he still believes much of it- but now he has a chance to manage at a decent standard top EPL Club. He will retain fond memories of Celtic, if he goes, but no regrets or second thoughts about accepting the job. He has betrayed us no more than Kieran Tierney did. We professed our love and desire for Ange to stay, as we did with Lenny, but we dumped him as we would have Ange as soon as regular results started to drop off. Our love and support for the manager is conditional too. This is the best way for him to go- leaving us on a high and in a better place than when he arrived. if we were shouting to get rid of him, it would be because the results were bad or we were becoming bored and wanting new bling. That is the lot of modern supporters and guys don’t stay as managers for 30/40 years any more. We will survive Ange leaving, if he does, and we might even thrive further if we handle it right. He will not be the only club figure we have to say goodbye to. Successful teams and players in smaller leagues or at smaller clubs will see a player churn. There will be transfer interest in Kyogo, Jota and Hatate. We might even see characters like CCV and Starfelt wanting to test themselves elsewhere. That won’t be down to Ange- any more than Juranovic going was. The one good lesson Ange taught us was to be prepared to sell and do transfer Jenga as he called it. Let’s hope the next guy has a good contacts book. Ange’s strike rate was pretty high but all our managers have done well in the small markets. The one who did least well was Brendan but he was great at player improvement so it worked out well there too. There is no need to fear the next manager as a step down. Just look back 2 years ago about how wrong we (most of us) were about Ange. We don’t need a big name; we need a good coach/manager. Let’s get cracking.

Great news, so pleased for you.

Disappointed Ange has gone, but I won’t lose any sleep over his departure.

Once they’ve left the building, @uck them, their loss.

My support moves to the next manager, who ever that might be.

  27. Big Jimmy, I called at the Ship Bank as I passed by on route to the People’s Park. It was packed. The lady on the door said she would pass on my hello.

  28. Ange was very good for us but has decided to leave and sò we move on. There are plenty of good managers out there so let’s hope we get the right one.

We need a progressive manager who plays on the front foot.

In terms of players, I expect those leaving will remain the same, perhaps with the exception of kayogo who I expect will follow ange and mooy who I expect will be released from his contract. I was expecting all of the senior players on loan to move on along with hazard and mccarthy. Expected hatate and abada to be sold this window too.

The core of the squad is good and the right appointment alongside good recruitment should see us in a good position.

We pursued howe before ange arrived so clearly that is some indication that those making moves have some idea about what they are doing g and what they need.

  30. the long wait is over on

    So Ange goes.

Good luck to him but I’ll spend little time pondering how he or Spurs are doing.

He could have , I think , gotten himself true legend status here but he chose to move on. For the increase in salary alone you can hardly blame him but let’s see it and him for what it is – a man taking a chance for money and a higher profile and who , it seems , was doing the courting rather be being courted.

    C’est La vie.

All that matters now is who we appoint not who has left.
