I’ve spoken to many Celtic fans over the last couple of days but I’ve not met one who would have preferred Roy Keane to be our manager instead of Ronny Deila. Despite some impeccable references, Ronny is a largely unknown character, but there is an appreciation among the support that we need to come up with a plan to enable the club to over-achieve in Europe.
The man’s performance at the media conference was faultless. It’s not important to quick-witted but his use of words like “energise” and “offensive” is promising. Football is in the entertainment business and Ronny appears to appreciate the link between the way his team perform, not just their results, and the ultimate satisfaction supporters’ leave the ground with.
Our thanks to the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club for hosting last night’s CQN Lions fundraiser for the Celtic FC Foundation. We were fortunate to be entertained by Willie Wallace, John Hughes and Bertie Auld, it was a fantastic night, full of laughs.
Special thanks to those who attended and helped raise over £2000 for the Foundation, and to those who promised to get involved with the Foundation. The club is in good hands with supporters like those in Greenock last night. Big shout to Joe and Mick for bringing a familiar old friend along.

Heard an interview with a Norwegian manager (English guy – didn’t catch his name) – was asked about it. Said not always so when playing away – said Ronny’s team tended to be more of a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Congratulations to Ronny on lasting one day in the job without calls for his resignation.
Like many here – everybody here?- I had never heard of him a week ago and am neither convinced he is a genius or that he will be a disaster. As I said in the pub last night in a year’s time he’ll either be a true hero or we will already be trying to forget his name.
As something of a malcontent who thinks our club needed to take something of a new direction I have to admit I have been caught on the hop with his appointment. We actually might have landed a man who signals a new professionalism at Celtic Park when it comes to the actual football. I am still disappointed that Peter Lawwell is still our de facto director of football but I think that with Ronny D we might just have someone who is interested in joining the dots at our club – someone who is not just going to pay lip service to picking and giving real runs to youngsters. It could all turn out abysmally but right now I don’t see why I – we- shouldn’t be optimistic.
Oh and after he said he would strip to his scanties if we won the Champions League my wee chum Bernie – as picked out by the cameras a couple of times last year- has promised to strip to hers in a similarly public manner. If we win the treble! Mon The Hoops!

I’d be genuinely sorry to see Commons discarded or left in a situation where he felt he had to leave. I know personally how much Celtic means to him and how much he wants to remain with us until his career ends.
However, I do see him having difficulty adopting to a new manager whose system is built around midfielders and forwards attacking but then getting back behind the ball when it’s lost. Kris doesn’t have the stamina for that.
Re the 4-3-3 system in Europe, especially the CL, my own opinion is we should never, ever go with that. I’d be surprised to see even teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid go with this system against good quality CL teams.
We’re never going to be able to afford the quality which would allow us to do this; coaching can only take you so far.

Apologies. My point was more that Ronny Deila fit the Celtic strategy much more closely than any expensive alternative. Some have said that strategy is all about downsizing. If anything, it seems to me to be about maximising the club’s potential.
That sounds like empty rhetoric, but those running Celtic Football Club genuinely believe that this can be achieved with a long term, strategic approach over the short term, win at all costs strategy of the old firm years.
This is a fresh page in the next chapter of the history of our club.
No one knows how the story will unfold; it could even- heaven forfend!be a great success.
Regardless, it’ s goin’ to be a lot of ole fun findin’ out.

Interestingly the same guy said that a number of Norwegian clubs were now copying the Strømsgodset model – youth development and a similar style of play.
While I agree the Liverpool model last season was entertaining – their achilles heel was their defence and getting caught out on occasion by counter-attacking football. Hopefully if we keep our current defence and add improvement to the offensive side – it could make for very football.
Hopefully, John Oxx is still the Daddy! Ebanoran to beat True Story & Australia….

Completely agree with your feelings about KC.
Having recently spent the day in his company it was a joy to see just what a fantastic ambassador for our club he really is.
No request for an autograph or photo was any trouble and he was more than happy to spend time talking to anyone who wanted some of his time.
I sincerely hope that a place can be found for him in this new regime.
Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar – I don’t think the new manager will come in and change things drastically at first. He has to get the right players in over time who will adapt to his philosophy, this will be done over the next season or 2.
I would like to see Kris Commons staying with Celtic is some capacity when he finishes playing, hopefully he hangs up his boots whilst he’s at Celtic.

Very interesting post! I totally agree. The league is where most attention should be focused, because over a large number of games, luck ‘should’, become much less of a factor than in knockout games in europe. But the focus is on europe, so thats where people are judged or remembered most.
I still remember that Kaká goal, pretty sure Neil had a chance to take him instead of the ball, but he correctly and fairly went for the ball. I doubt most other teams, especially Itallians, would have been so kind. Pretty sure they would take the player first in that sort of circumstance, and be happy with the yellow card and a free kick against them on the half way line……
And, as a bit of a fan of WGS, it sometimes felt like he could go all the way, and people would still find fault with him!
Anyway, happy with the appointment too, and like you, I hope he has a wee bit of luck in europe, maybe even a bit unlucky in the 3rd round qualifer, so we go into europa league, and get some memorable wins. ;-)

It’s tactic and countertactic. Has been for all the long years of football. Even in my lifetime, I recall MON’s 3-5-2 that was practically unstoppable in the league and cups. McLeish briefly resisted with his 4-3-3 with Cannigia and Lovenkrands in the wide roles.
I vividly recall a game at Ibrox where MON unexpectedly reverted to 4-4-2, recalled McNamara and Lovenkrands found himself sprinting at him instead of space. In 1 game, McLeish went from a tactical genius to a dunce. The difference was he had no ability to adapt to changing tactics and circumstances. He had no answer.
Much like the fabled Barcelona 4-3-3, now neutered by Messi’s insistance on playing a central free role, Puyol sinking into the twilight and retirement and a parade of 4-5-1 counterattacking teams with genuine quality in the flanks and foward positions.
Tactical flexibility and adaptability are key to the modern game in both management and personnel. Hopefully we just recruited a man who not only possesses the flexibility but the desire to learn.

Yep, I agree with that too. He’s done the first few of his coaching badges so who knows what the future may hold for him at Celtic, as a player and possibly a coach also in time.

Fascinating times…:
As supporters, we are free with our opinions, often, by necessity, there opinions come without much knowledge. But that’s what we do, and it’s part of the fun.
With regard to PLAYERS, we obviously have much more to go on. We watch the game. I am sure there are many on here who have played the game at a variety of levels. And we pay our money, so we are entitled to observe and opine.
Back in the early days of the internet, someone on the ‘Big List’ described Henrick as a ‘totty’ after his debut at Easter Road. We had fun with that one, but it is easy to do. We observe and we opine. It is easy to see when things are not going well for a player. What we often don’t know is why.
I went to a game once with a coach of a Scottish team. He was looking at a player. Before hand, he told me what attributes he was looking for. The guy never kicked a ball. At half time, I opined as much. The coach agreed. Then he talked about why this was so. He mentioned a couple of things that were happening elsewhere on the pitch, leading to the player in question never getting the ball in the desired spaces. Food for thought for a happy amateur like me…..
It becomes a bit more difficult when it comes to coaches. Apart from results, performances and touchline demeanour, we really have nothing to go on. We don’t see how they do their jobs in the same way that we see players doing theirs.
Add to that the fact that what someone may have achieved in one country/league/team/time is not necessarily indicative of that they will achieve in a different environment.
So, I think that the best we can do is hope. It was thus with Neil’s appointment. And it will be the same with Ronny’s.
There was a very good post earlier about the early luck (or lack of) experienced by previous managers. Let’s hope Ronny has tons of early luck and we make it safely into the CL. That will give hime the breathing space he needs.

Kris deservedly has a place in the Celtic family and, whilst it would be sad if he didn’t fit the new strategy, it may be unavoidable.
Hopefully it won’t come to that.
If he can maybe get another year, he could perhaps find a niche in the Youth set up.

Long before Tony Mowbray became our manager, I muttered aloud that I hope that guy never gets near the Celtic job.
Why? His struggling side had just got humped at Old Trafford. No real shame in that (at that time).
However, in his post match interview, he said that he would never change his attacking approach. ‘This is my philosophy. This is the way I play. It is about performances’.
I thought, this guy is going to get his team relegated. It isn’t about him. It is about making the changes needed to get points out of the next few games.
They got relegated.
I hope that we have a manager who believes in observing, learning and adjusting.
Just want to let you all know. Even though I am gash I have a 100% win rate at the CQN fives of a Thursday evening. How’s that for a fatty?
