Error in positions. Racism in spate

463

Just as a year ago, we lost the first game of the season against Newco, but the similarities end with the result.  Celtic bossed the first half and created the better chances in an even second period.  Goals change games and when Kyogo Furuhashi centred a cross for Odsonne Edouard, the game should have changed.  Instead, Odsonne took his eye off the ball, which bounced off his heel and ran to safety.

One week ago today, despite scoring six against St Mirren, I urged Ange Postecoglou to play Kyogo through the middle, if necessary moving Odsonne to the left.  He started Kyogo on the left yesterday and although Celtic enjoyed the bulk of possession, they were blunt in front of goal; Odsonne’s miss starkly demonstrating the point.  It was a foreseeable error from Ange, which he later accepted.

Although Newco were unable to keep possession throughout the first half, at home, exclusively in front of their own fans, news of their demise was exaggerated.  They survived the torrent when required and adjusted their game plan at halftime.  From that point, Celtic were no more than equal in the contest until Kyogo moved into the middle on 70 minutes.

After Kygo shot from a tight angle, Ryan Christie reacted animatedly towards his teammate, presumably complaining that the Japanese striker did not square the ball for him to finish in front of goal.

I’m never keen on Celtic players shouting at each other and suspect this show of agitation contributed to Kyogo passing instead of shooting moments later, when the clear shot at goal was on.  Our Imperious Icon could be forgiven for wondering why bother laying chances on a plate for others after Edouard’s earlier miss.

Just like the first goal we lost to Newco last season, yesterday’s goal was lost from a set piece but I’m not pressing the panic button on this one.  Last year we were unable to form a straight defensive line, it was largely the central defenders who were causing the problems.  The defenders were correctly marshalled yesterday, the goal was lost because none of the others picked up a late runner.

The transformation in Celtic in such a short period has been beyond any of our expectations.  We will continue to improve and I expect will top the table after Newco’s visit on 2 January.  In losing twice so early, however, we have put ourselves under unwelcome pressure.  Playing the beautiful stuff is not always rewarded.

Last week they came after the Japanese, yesterday, they came after the Irish.  Racism in Scotland is in spate, it was even given a police escort post-match in Glasgow yesterday.  It is not the responsibility of Celtic to win so often that the mob have no opportunity to wreak havoc on the city.

Our political leaders and police cannot ignore this problem away.  Scotland is home to many cultures, creeds and ethnicities.  All will suffer unless the laws of the land are enforced.

Understand Crystal Palace are still in talks with Celtic over a deal for French striker Odsonne Edouard. Told he is Patrick Vieira’s preferred target.

The Idiotic chanting, fair enough, we’ve all seen and heard much worse, but being escorted / protected by the long arm of the law, Police Scotland, honestly thats something I never thought I’d see in my lifetime.

Absolutely shocking, protected by the Law, that lot must think they are invincible now.

  4. Yesterday result was a sickener, for us all.

But we were not outplayed it was a 50/50 game we could just as easily have won as lost.

I don’t accept the Huns are a better side than us,

I do accept they are more settled & organized but I am hopeful as season progresses we will catch up in that regard.

It’s still very early days under Ange & of course the Jury is still out on Ange himself & the players he has brought in.

Some Individuals on here will always look for the negatives others myself included tend to look for the positives.

Obviously the ghuys who are in between & can balance both are the ghuys worth reading, but it’s a Blog so it would be a pointless exercise posting here if we all agreed with each other.

We have a very Special Manager in the hotseat and it is a Marriage made in Heaven. ;)

  6. Guys we currently have 74 professionals. 37 in first team and 37 in B squad. We are linked to sign 3 more players giving us 77 pros. A match day squad is 17. leaves 60 players not in 1st team.

The club have clearly backed the Management. It is not healthy to have so many players not involved. Lowland league games this season are a help but can anyone remember us having so many players.

It must cost a fortune in wages. I dont think Eduoard or Christie will earn us a Transfer fee as they will be Bosmans. I think we need to reduce the numbers

We have thrown money down the drain with very poor recruitment,we should have a DOF in who has a good track record.

    ……

Lets face it the head of scouting is already providing data on potential players and targets. People can moan about the success rate but ultimately we have no clue how good the scouts are because they dont make the final decisions about players. There may well be some great talent on their list.

It appears to me there are a couple of issues, firstly the signings have not always appeareded to reflect the needs of the squad in terms of playing style etc. And the people negotiating seem unable to do it without lots of delays and at a snail’s pace.

The guy who is shaping the teams style and tactics has been a manager for 25 years, I am sure he knows the type of players he wants and needs. He has mentioned that he is likely to consider other players from the j league and beyond in jan.

My focus would be on improving communication so the scouts know what type of player they are looking to sign I.e physicality, pace, stamina, strength, footballing skillset for each position and making sure that the manager gets final say on first team purchases.

Changing or adding people makes little difference if the process remains cumbersome and slow.

  9. The problem with only focusing on positives is that you don’t improve on the negatives.

I think there’s more to “backing the management” than shovelling up Sheffield Wednesday projects and other assorted Lawwell-esque punts like Bangura, A Balde, Shved, Rasmussen, Soro, Thompson and the dozens of others who we’ve forgotten about.

My idea of supporting the management is to

    1) ascertain what/who he feels – within obvious reason, eg we’re not going to be chasing young Haaland, before the usual smart arses start misquoting me – he needs to improve the club.

    2) as far as is practically possible, work to deliver such targets.

That costs proper money. It might actually see us kick on and approach the levels where we leave the Hun behind.

That’s why we don’t do it.

Some posts are probably multi monikered and identically written to others that popped up yesterday like they do every time we’ve lost to Sevco and remain hidden when we beat Alkmaar, some Monikers begrudgingly nip back, for a one line well done Ange, good luck you’ll need it Ange, fakes.

We’ve only a few here thankfully all angry, suffering from mania and anti Celtic venomous dirge. Nothing is good enough fanatical but clearly not a supporters words. Anybody that is positive is a board lackie, anybody that has a different opinion to 52,000 season ticket holders are naive or plain gormless daft Celtic supporters.

Celtic Quick News is a magnet for the cynic, because most of the posters are genuinely Celtic supporters, no difficulty is seeing the club as a club, and not become obsessed by ‘board’ or ‘PLC’ hatred. You’d almost swear there were those raging that Celtic had sold out the ST’s, raging that we’ve drawn good teams in the Europa and will sell out the package, signed eight players so far in a rebuild, raging that Ange signed Kyogo

So, we’ve sold out STs? Don’t believe it. And the teams we’ve drawn in the EL are so poor we’ll not sell out the package, not after buying eight rubbish weaklings which includes that wee Japanese guy. Sack Ange now!

I want Celtic to be what it could be.

It angers me that people are running the club in a manner which is designed to have it operate at half capacity for the benefit of a long term flaws business model.

Your definition above is frankly insulting.

  16. BUILDING A PATHWAY

The Celtic Youth Academy give young players the support and developing the skills required to become professional footballers.

    SINCE 2000/01:

51 players have made the first team

1 in 3 have become professional footballers

19 have played in the UEFA Champions League

    41 have become full internationals

  17. We have to acknowledge that we need players for two separate squads.

    1) The main squad playing in the SPFL and Europe and

    2) The B squad playing in the Lowland League, our 5th tier.

Both these squads will need substantial back up numbers as injury and suspension will reduce numbers at certain points of the year.

As I understand it, you need to register 22 players for the B team and anyone who has played 5 games for the first team cannot play for the B team until the next window. Therefore it is not easy to transfer players between squads e.g. 1st team players recovering from injury.

Allowing us to play in the Lowland League was made grudgingly and we cannot expect that it will be automatically renewe or that a move up to 4th tiet League Two is going to be heavily restricted.

We have a cohort of players who have been loaned out to Dunfermline, Morton Queens Park etc who will look at the regular games as a step down as will the bhoys who joined from The English Chanpionship. We may still need a flexible “loaned-out” group who need to develop at a higher level than the 5th tier this year. I think the jump from 5th tier football to the SPFL will take time and we need this “loan Out” system as an intermediate step

  20. We do not have a 1st team squad of 37 player ffs. Included on that list are a bunch of prospects i.e. Hazard, Doolan, Montgomary, Murray, O’connor, URHOGHIDE, Shaw, Robertson, Connell, mcinroy, Henderson, Dembelle, AFOLABI. So 13 of the 37 are kids.

That leaves us with 24b1st team players and I dont think anyone would be surprised to see eduard, christie, boli, griff, AJETI or barkas leave before the transfer window closes.

  21. The Huns seem to be having a few problems emulating our successful business plan

Three going concern warnings in a row in their accounts were met with two directors making statements about having to sell one or two players fir profit every year. It’s the only way that either us or them can remain solvent if we don’t qualify for the champions league

Spending the money is the easy part, being successful while being able to sell your most valuable assets is much more difficult.

We’ve had years of getting the whole thing right , they don’t seem to be able to even get the selling part right.

  22. The n team squad includes every age group from under 17, 18, 19 so its hardly massive amounts we are talking about here.

Take the name Celtic out of it. Take the raw emotion out of it, take the game of favourite players bought and sold out of it.

Look at it only as a business for a moment. Only the numbers, only the business performance.

The PLC state they operate a football business, on a 5 year rolling plan. Take any 5 years in the past 21, and tell e, BASED ON THE NUMBERS only, were and when did the 5 YEAR PLAN fail ?

    Squad is weak

Squad is infinitely refreshed, and somewhat better than the side that lost at the same venue

0 – 4 in a one off Cup Tie. Even the players that were there that day are playing out of their skin under AP.

    We were bullied yesterday.

Meaningless cliché – we dominated the game see stats and we lost to the odd goal, we even won the aerial duels.

    Board have made a killing.

Admit, you’d need to help me with that Celtic selling all their ST’s? so we’ll blame the board for having sold all the Celtic season tickets?

Had I been playing I would have scored the Edouard miss and things would have been very different, but the cynics would have been complaining who is that fat auld guy that’s

    just converted Kyogo’s cross.

    C’est La vie CSC

  25. BSR,

I would also have converted the Kyogo pass to Edourd for a goal.

Thats me just getting into the box now having left the halfway line at kickoff

  26. Cornelius…………….Agree with you entirely, I’ve attended big sporting events of many codes but the cascade of all kinds of rubbish at Celtic players that an element of Rangers fans could lay their hands on was a disgrace and a new low to me at a sports event. Stewards and security made no attempt to intervene either on public address or otherwise.

  27. Doing some homework and a quick views of the last accounts , trying to tie up why they persist with buying players cheap, loads of them, at all levels, youths , prospects, journeymen, never good enoughs, scots, irish, others, randoms, never heard offs, has beens, in the hope they turn into a player we can sell to make more money for the board dividens and their bonus.

A glance at the board make up has no Peter Lawwell listed, how did that happen, shocking state of affairs .

  28. Snake Plissken on

I am going to make a prediction or two:

Sevco will sell one player tomorrow but not one who will impact them. They may even sign more.

They are throwing yet another season’s gamble at getting directly into the Champion’s league by winning our league. There is a chance the winners of this season’s title could still have to play qualifiers depending on if the CL winner finishes in their league’s top 4 (because only teams from 5 leagues can win it or will win it). It is unlikely any team who does win it will finish outside their top 4/ qualification positions apart from maybe England depending on who wins what – it’s the only European league where a top 4 finish could happen from a team that doesn’t win the CL realistically.

I expect them to retain 99% of that squad thinking it is enough.

Covid is not going to impact them – whether by fair means or foul they will not see an outbreak that damages who is available for selection to any meaningful level – they were missing a keeper and a right back. They had their full team out yesterday and won from a corner but they still one.

They are being ruthless (I would use another word myself) and Celtic need to do the same.

Celtic need to use today and tomorrow exceptionally. Fill all the positions needed and get those out the door the manager knows are not fully committed. Build the rapport and understanding and find a way to win in all weathers and circumstances.

It is the only way to get the title back and challenge for the cups. We will get no leniency if Covid comes back to our playing squad. The media WILL report on ANY case that occurs because they will actually bother to find out.

A wise man once said “Don’t you think they need the Champions league’s money?”

We have been here before 10-12 years before.

I just hope there is the impetus at Celtic Park to make sure Celtic give themselves the chance they need to prevent them getting the lifeline they crave.

  29. The rubbish at the goalkeeper thing should be punishable , but not in scottish football.
