Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

  1. I look forward to posting on the 19th September

    in an independent Scotland.

    How good does that sound.

  2. the currency argument is the biggest emotional debate going,

and its a crock of shit.

its the most scaremongering and idiotic position.

it doesnt matter a jot whether scotland had pounds, euros , dabloons or bawbees.

offcourse there are currency trading aspects, but,

i travel all the time, and havnt found a country with no currency yet.

its a tory argument “the pound”, they did the same for europe. no euro, we are british,

now its no pound for the scottish

    tosh and nonsense i say.

I’ve finally decided……i will be voting yes……mainly because noone could fail more miserably than Britain to address poverty in favour of power and money …. I honestly believe that Scotland will be a more caring Country without the British politico…… and, with a wee bit of luck most bhuns will move to England …. (We might even get the SW of Scotland back??)

Money and finances, I can understand that reasoning.

There is also a distinct possibility that the population will become more affluent as a result of Independence, is there not?

Hence the obvious panic in Westminster, at the very notion that independence is a distinct possibility.

  5. Cut and paste from the Dundee website – reads like someone has been on the bevy!

Fans are reminded the Dundee Ticket office will be open from 10am until kick off tomorrow morning. If intend on coming to the match and you are yet to buy a ticket we would advise you do to so as early as possible.

  6. Saint Stivs, bob on, the Bank of England is such in name only, legally it is the Bank of the UK.

Any break up of the UK will include the break up of the joint bank, or a negotiated joint currency.

Gideon Osborne has no right, nor power to deny Scotland using the pound.

So why should we always have to put up with engerands choice? If we had a real Labour Party I would have no quams about supporting them, but this New Labour, as was seen with Tony Blair and carried on with the most ridiculous Labour leader I have seen in my lifetime, mr Milliband, the socialists in, not just the Scots, but the whole of the UK can whistle in the wind. In my late 60s now and the excuses for MPs is very questionable. We need more from working class backgrounds, and that aint likely to happen. Time we all opened our eyes. Oxford and Cambridge personnel will always win, mark my words. KTF. Cot now.

Weefra HH praying to Wee Oscar.

    ———————————————————-

I’m not sure what you mean by a “real” Labour Party. My point was that, if the vote were Yes then we would have an election shortly after to elect a Scottish Government. It won’t be the Labour Party that wins that election – as you have demonstrated, they’ve lost the trust of the Scottish people. I would expect an SNP government with Labour the 2nd party. The % of votes would be similar to what we have at present. So more than half of the population would not have the government/party they voted for.

  8. Everyone who has a vote should ask themself’s one question, and one question only.

WHY DO THE WESTMINSTER GOVERNMENT WANT YOU TO VOTE NO.

It’s all about the money, your money, your kids money.

Forget all the issues that may or may not happen if we get control of our own affairs.

Just ask yourself one simple question.

Would you prefer a neighbour, no matter how wise or how well intentioned he was, to look after your family’s affairs. Do you believe that ANYBODY would be more prudent on your behalf than you are yourself ?

    NO, you would not.

Vote YES to look after your own affairs.

    Good night.

Doc & DD I hear you but would liked to have seen more facts & figures from Yes campaign and its a shambles there hasn’t been any!, I already know what the status quo is but i’m left with the devil I know compared to don’t know if that makes sense. I was fortunate to live in Ireland for 13 years and loved it, the sport, culture, history, etc but the way the country is run is a basket case & as a small independent country similar to Scotland in terms of size and population.

So much corruption & cronyism it beggars belief, in fact as i’ve often mentioned the fought you for 800years & fecked it up in less than 100 themselves (as a 1st generation scot i am very proud of my ancestry)

I fear we will have to pay €65 to see a GP

    €150 for A&E

    €150 for Prescriptions

Private v Public medical system , even with private care €200 to see a consultant with a cash machine in the private lobby (cash always preferred!!!)

Poor health system both private & public from my experience.

No free press everyone in everyone else’s pocket, scatching backs etc so many taxes on peoples wages!

Yes campaign talk of £2.5bn in Defence , yet in Ireland its €1.3BN so why twice as much?

Unfortunately I see a very poor genepool of politicians across the various parties similar to those i saw in Ireland & how I wish we had those Norwegians who had the foresight to set up their Sovereign Wealth Fund now worth £528Bn.

So i’m left with the option of accepting the status quo of Westminster who have fecked it up or the other option that if we’re going to f@ck it up we might aswell do it ourselves.

    Sorry to be negative!

I knew when Derk came on last Tuesday, we were up against it even more. He doesn’t have the commitment needed to turn things around for us, He gave a couple of daft fouls away which played inti Maribor’s hands re running down the clock.

If he doesn’t leave by Monday, settle up his contract and mutually consent him.. I don’t like doing this with any of our players but he has not shown anything for us to have any faith in him.
