Evidence mounts as Celtic look set to further improve

930

I’d a look at the fixture list preseason and didn’t expect we’d be top of the table so early, having played only three games with 10 teams having played four, and two of those games coming against our nearest challengers from last season.

But we stepped up to the task. The earlier win at Tynecastle and beating Aberdeen 4-1 on Saturday has issued a warning to all. Bookmakers are offering Celtic’s title odds of between 2/9 and 1/7, and have created a separate ‘Betting without Celtic’ competition. One of Brendan’s jobs will be to remind players that they need to earn the points every time the whistle goes. Defeats come quickly to teams operating at 95%.

Not that we had it all our own way on Saturday. Aberdeen disrupted our rhythm and passing in the middle part of the game. You can see how Brendan has changed the way we use the ball in possession, but there’s still a bit of work to do for it to become more natural looking.

The goals were outstanding. Leigh Griffiths’ effort would be immortalised in song, if one of the Barcelona players due to visit Celtic Park soon had managed it. Tom Rogic’s technique is of particular importance.

Celtic face a lot of packed defences; having someone able to reliably hit an unstoppable shot from around 22 yards changes how a defence will shape up to play us. This is a player Leeds United thought they could buy for £1m recently.

I was pleased to see Dorus de Vries make his debut. He had little to do, and could do nothing about the Aberdeen goal, but if he’s to be relied upon in any of the important games ahead he needed an outing as a Celtic player.

It was equally important Erik Sviatchenko came through 90 minutes with Kolo Toure. The defence is set for some almighty challenges ahead, and will need to face them with little common game-time to allow partnerships to be cemented.

There’s a degree of trepidation for the Champions League task ahead, but pretenders to our domestic dominance beware: evidence mounts that this is a good Celtic team – one which will continue to improve for some time to come.

  1. a light insanity on

My first game is one of my favourite memories. 6-1 Scottish cup final. I was wearing Celtic strip and got passed around crowd as I looked like the Jimmy Johnstone blow uo.

  2. Just had a wee peep to see how the fundraising by Green Brigade for Palestine was going. Just £26 short of £163k. Amazing. However what really drew my attention and amusement was last donation of £5 was listed as Ruth Dudley Edwards. Some guy with a wicked sense of humour. Maybe lost on guys who don’t know about the bitch but WITS , Almore & most of the Irish lads here will know what I’m on about.

  3. I am normally a lurker , at 12.50 today An Teach Solais accused me of being a Hun as I defended my friend, so I responded to him and he very graciously apologised which I respect, Kill Ultra was accused of being some guy from Level 5 name mentioned earlier, I said I know him and he is not level 5 guy end of. Winning Captains I know from reading your posts over the years that you have had to deal with a lot of crap from various places, I apologise unreservedly to you to you if my posts today caused you upset. Dallas….blame that Moonbeams 9.46 limiting us to 10

    We have hunners :-)

Pittodrie when Alan Thompson scored a bhoy was walking through the crowd with a tray (?) of snowballs not as important as great triumphs but a cracking Celtic supporting moment

  5. I try to take posters on here at face value,

but i am wary of those that seem to have the lowdown on what goes on inside Celtic Park,

but cannot release the “source” of such information,

and those who claim to know certain facts but are not willing to post them, denying others the opportunity to question the truth of said facts

Joe Filippi , the Celtic Underground site has an article on Jimmy ‘ no wonder Celtic decided to play this little boy’ Johnstone’s debut game.

I haven’t read it yet but will read it tonight or tomorrow.

My quote above is from a BBC sportsreel comentator when Jimmy played a game at Hampden.

Mid 70s game in Dundee got 6 seats in the stand rather than our usual terrace tickets, King Kenny got a hat trick and we won 6.1 I think . My pal big John went for a pee 10 mins before half time and decided to bring back pies and bovril to miss half time rush, left kiosk with 6 pies and bovrls and held them on a tray above his head along the narrow seating when he sat down had only 1 pie and 2 bovrls and a red face. 12. THE EXILED TIM @ 10:23 PM,

    That’s very true…

That “Don’t feed the troll” piece was very true.

But when you care about something seeing it being abused is bound to be aggrivating, ignoring it isn’t so easy.

Won’t get started on the personal slurs…

One crumb of comfort WC mentions… we know how much they’re rattled;)

    Hail Hail

  13. ChairBhoy, indeed.

PapaJoe55, I haven’t seen any independent identification yet. You say you know Kill Ultra, do you work for the same agency?

I believe it was you who mentioned you knew where WC’s lived, intimidating when someone you don’t know let’s you know you know where they bide, you know?

  14. Favourite memories of watching Celtic? Even though I am from the 6 counties I have been fortunate enough to see some great games in the flesh (mainly due to Return to Paradise CFC) So I cannot put these in order:

    Celtic 2 – 1 St Johnstone

    6 – 2 Dead club

    Liverpool 0 – 2

2 – 0 Dead club Lambert and Jackie

    1 – 0 Barca Thomo

    4 – 2 Juve

    1 – 0 M U Naka free kick

    5 – 1 Dead club

0 – 1 defeat to Ajax (qualified for Champions League)

    3 – 0 Shaktar

  15. GFTB…

Corkcelt – very funny indeed. She is quite the warped mind is the bold Ruth. The trouble is that people regard her as a ‘historian’. She also writes fiction I believe. I can’t tell the difference between her made up stuff and what she claims is historical. Her latest on the signatories if the proclamation is scandalous.

All historians are biased and the best recognise it and allow for it in their writing. Ruth just thinks she is right and everyone else is warped.

I explained to winning captains the Tommy Gemmell connection, he and Jamesgang often talk of their town I said I lived about 20 mins away but never mentioned his town , again I apologise if I have unintentionally done wrong.

Bankiebhoy, the last time I drove past Dalsetter , there didn’t look like there were any playable pitches . I may be wrong.

It was strange that less than a mile away, there were two or three grass pitches overlooking Great Western Road at the far end of Linnvale , which rarely seemed to be used.

Philbhoy, some one on here once referred to Wilshere as Jack Wheelchair due to all his injuries.

He is a good player and has a nasty streak and has a hun like perma scowl coupon.

  27. Anyway, I’m away to the scratcher. Work in the morning.

I was going to write that it’s only the Internet and you can switch it off when it gets too much. But sadly it seems to have gone further and spiller in to the real world. Posting addresses etc? That’s messed up.

Like I say, twighlight zone. Yo those responsible – rangers died. Accept the truth, Get over it, move on. Stop blaming the wrong people for your ongoing trials as football supporters. You’d be far better off demonstrating wherever David Murray hangs out, the record, the herald, the ET and all the others who pulled the wool over your eyes.

But then some of you are those guys …. Jeez, it gets complex. Take a year out to reflect on your contribution to the death of your favourite club. Eejits

  28. Two of my favourite Celtic supporting moments.

The first was when the jungle chanted the name of the opposing team as we were pumping them stupit at the time, even shouted encouragement when they got into our half. 2-0 up from the first leg, big Shuggie piled on the misery by opening the scoring in the return at Paradise… Who was that team? ;)

The second was at the game versus previous version of the dead’uns when Souness played for them. They sang Sou-ne-ess, and we immediately responded with Pea-ne-ess. Brilliant. Did he not get sent off that game too?

    Hail Hail,

These are personal choices from the last 20 years and also 1967 obviously,

    1. Boavista away 2003.

    2. 6-2 against the old Rangers, especially Henrik’s chip.

    3. 9-0 Aberdeen

    4. Juventus in the Champions League. 4-3.

    5. 5-1 against the old Rangers when Lubo ran the game.

    6. Listening to the Aberdeen game when Samaras equalised as we were on the ferry to Belfast after the cycle from Glasgow via Girvan and the snow past Ballantrae for wee Oscar.

    7. Nakamura’s goal against Man Utd.

    8. Lubo’s goal against Motherwell that beat Goram.

    9. Meeting the Celtic squad in Paris and Birmingham airports in 2001 and getting Lubo and Henrik’s autograph on a caricature I had done in Paris.

    10. Watching our second equaliser in the Porto game in a bar in Seville.

    11. Lisbon 1967.

  30. Phyllis D

Just saw your post about tickets for Man City away. I’ve emailed you regarding it

Many thanks for the offer to help M, good man ye are!

  31. What happens next?

Two days to go to the end of the beginning.

That is BR’s emergency efforts to get us moving ahead.

One thing is for sure — The a Growth Agenda works and it works for everybody.

After all the nonsense and all the excuses about how their was no money — no money in the Scottish game, no money in the Scottish / 10 counties economy, no money anywhere — the ticket office is no earning it’s keep and going to CP is now something to look forward to.

Big push on the season tickets is working — after years of slippage the season ticket mentality is back and it has been re-in forced by the single ticket pricing strategy. So far so 2004 — so what happens next?

This is only the first stage.

Next stage is a squad with enough fight, talent and intelligence to put on three great performances at CP in the CL — everybody mentioned the exploits of Astana in the CL, we need to match that and then some.

This will generate credibility that will generate revenue and it will attract better players in Jan.

Slow going, hard to get started but there is a virtuous circle out there and we need to grab it with both hands. There is a lot of catching up to do — T/O down 30% plus — but we now are in The best position possible to really take the club to the next level.

We need to push the U20 team.

We need to upgrade the facillities at CP.

We need to work the squad harder to lose the deadwood.

We need to make room for the players that we will need to get to the Last 8 in the CL.

We need to draw up plans to improve the area around CP and make the most of our location.

Finally we need to draw up plans to replace the Main Stand.

If we get things right another 10K seats will be a target we can hit / fill.

Hard lesson over the past 8 years.

Moneyball will fail eventually, and when it did, it was messy — April 2016 messy.

We can either stagnate, decline into insignificance and then collapse.

Or we can strive for a better future.

Getting BR onboard was the start.
