Evidence mounts as Celtic look set to further improve

930

I’d a look at the fixture list preseason and didn’t expect we’d be top of the table so early, having played only three games with 10 teams having played four, and two of those games coming against our nearest challengers from last season.

But we stepped up to the task. The earlier win at Tynecastle and beating Aberdeen 4-1 on Saturday has issued a warning to all. Bookmakers are offering Celtic’s title odds of between 2/9 and 1/7, and have created a separate ‘Betting without Celtic’ competition. One of Brendan’s jobs will be to remind players that they need to earn the points every time the whistle goes. Defeats come quickly to teams operating at 95%.

Not that we had it all our own way on Saturday. Aberdeen disrupted our rhythm and passing in the middle part of the game. You can see how Brendan has changed the way we use the ball in possession, but there’s still a bit of work to do for it to become more natural looking.

The goals were outstanding. Leigh Griffiths’ effort would be immortalised in song, if one of the Barcelona players due to visit Celtic Park soon had managed it. Tom Rogic’s technique is of particular importance.

Celtic face a lot of packed defences; having someone able to reliably hit an unstoppable shot from around 22 yards changes how a defence will shape up to play us. This is a player Leeds United thought they could buy for £1m recently.

I was pleased to see Dorus de Vries make his debut. He had little to do, and could do nothing about the Aberdeen goal, but if he’s to be relied upon in any of the important games ahead he needed an outing as a Celtic player.

It was equally important Erik Sviatchenko came through 90 minutes with Kolo Toure. The defence is set for some almighty challenges ahead, and will need to face them with little common game-time to allow partnerships to be cemented.

There’s a degree of trepidation for the Champions League task ahead, but pretenders to our domestic dominance beware: evidence mounts that this is a good Celtic team – one which will continue to improve for some time to come.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

We all need to be careful we don’t cross the line. I hope Mats comes back on here as I genuinely believe his brand of what is right for Celtic needs to be heard.

Without doubt Mats crossed the line and should have issued a prompt apology for his inappropriate terminology in describing a section of the Celtic support.

But long before that he was being vilified for some perfectly valid posts, whereas some more “radical”single issue posters were never taken to task.

Yes, undeniably playing the man instead of the ball. George Orwell’s message about equality from Animal Farm is staring us in the face.

I am very reluctant to get involved in last nights posting debacle. I firmly believe that the Res 12 guys deserve our relentless support. They are getting close and certain sections of the establishment will try to prevent this , by fair means or foul . They must anticipate intimidating tactics and no doubt character assassination because nobody thought it would evolve to this extent. A potential ” House of cards” scenario.

However as in all walks of life where you stick your head above the parapet you must expect questions. To never question anything is folly and undemocratic. I’m sure individually they will understand that.

However the place for questioning from friends is not an open forum. The integrity of the resolutions is beyond question, but Celtic supporters have been cheated for God knows how long and naturally we would like answers.

Good luck and more power to your pens, but take care. I have no doubt you will prevail, but there are many hurting Huns in the establishment.

Hail, Hail. To truth and justice.

I have seen the film and I have to say that the director captured the book brilliantly.

The only other McCarthy book I have read is All the Pretty Horses. I should give the others a go – I’ve seen the No Country for Old Men film, would like to read the book too.

Anyone ever read the book The Road by Cormac McCarthy? It is a depressing, distressing and harrowing read. Still, you read it all, cover to cover.

Nice one. When the teamsheet was released and Dorus was in goal I was hoping you scoreline prediction would come to pass. Wasn’t disappointed! Though didn’t look like it early on in the game. Bit slack at times. Hopefully new signings will bolster our defence.

Morning Bhoys So we are still bickering this morning it can be hard to believe sometimes when you come on CQN that we are all Celtic supporters. One thing I have learned from the resolution 12 saga is that a fan on the board would not work as he/she would constantly be under fire from one side or the other.I also often wonder if some posters get any enjoyment out of supporting Celtic ? as all they appear to do is constantly argue with each other.I am more interested to see if we will sign anyone else before the window shuts.H.H.

  9. Ten best?

    Or maybe 10 earliest.

Possibly just the 10 I can remember.

    1) Start at the beginning — Aug 1970 vs Clyde — my first game / the last run out of LL’s.

    2) One for the historians — 1970 LC game? — KD scores 5 / LMcC scores 3.

I only read about it in the paper but it was the first time I had read about these names.

    3) Basle in 1974 — SM scores the winner in injury time.

    4) Hibs in May 77 — One nil victory to win the league.

    5) TFOD in May 79 — Ten men won the league but I was left at home.

    6) 85 / 88 Cup Finals — Wife is from a DU supporting family / They still have the emotional scars 30 years on but thems the breaks and anyway it all came good in 94.

    7) TFOD in Jan 98 — Started to believe with the PL screamer.

    8) TFOD in Aug 2000 aka 6-2 game — 7 pubs in Maidenhead visited before we found a pub showing the game. Couldn’t believe the score when the game came up.

    9) Juve in Sept 2001 — listening to it on the car radio and then came their penalty with minutes to go. We had arrived but I was gutted. Very poignant date for the wife’s family so watching the game was out of the question. Slipped out to get a loaf and some fresh air only to catch us equalising and then they got “lucky”.

    10) Seville — watched from afar but still some game.

  10. traditionalist88 on

Really like the look of Gamboa, pacy, good on the ball and seems to get stuck in.

Not a fan of dismissing players for the sole reason are too small, individually they should be judged on their technical ability but slightly concerned about the lack of height in the team. That’ll be two small full backs leaving a lot of pressure on the two CB’s when defending set pieces etc… especially if we play Craig Gordon who does not command his penalty area…

Bitton is tall but not an automatic pick nor necessarily great in the air. League games we will be fine but maybe the thinking is our opposition in the CL score their goals by passing around you so quick players are the way to stop this as opposed to the Tony Pulis 4 CB approach?!

I sold my ticket to an older guy who promised to lift me over as part of the deal. He renaiged but luckily enough a turnstyle plod saw this and told the next guy to lift me over. Must’ve been a Tim cop. Celtic absolutely jammed that night. My second best Celtic experience after Seville. Incredible atmosphere.

  22. One of my main memories of Bobby Lennox was the incredible number of times he was incorrectly flagged offside due to his pace.

Anyone else remember the goal which was ruled no goal at Anfield, that would have put us through to the Cup-Winners Cup Final at Hampden.
