Evidence mounts as Celtic look set to further improve

930

I’d a look at the fixture list preseason and didn’t expect we’d be top of the table so early, having played only three games with 10 teams having played four, and two of those games coming against our nearest challengers from last season.

But we stepped up to the task. The earlier win at Tynecastle and beating Aberdeen 4-1 on Saturday has issued a warning to all. Bookmakers are offering Celtic’s title odds of between 2/9 and 1/7, and have created a separate ‘Betting without Celtic’ competition. One of Brendan’s jobs will be to remind players that they need to earn the points every time the whistle goes. Defeats come quickly to teams operating at 95%.

Not that we had it all our own way on Saturday. Aberdeen disrupted our rhythm and passing in the middle part of the game. You can see how Brendan has changed the way we use the ball in possession, but there’s still a bit of work to do for it to become more natural looking.

The goals were outstanding. Leigh Griffiths’ effort would be immortalised in song, if one of the Barcelona players due to visit Celtic Park soon had managed it. Tom Rogic’s technique is of particular importance.

Celtic face a lot of packed defences; having someone able to reliably hit an unstoppable shot from around 22 yards changes how a defence will shape up to play us. This is a player Leeds United thought they could buy for £1m recently.

I was pleased to see Dorus de Vries make his debut. He had little to do, and could do nothing about the Aberdeen goal, but if he’s to be relied upon in any of the important games ahead he needed an outing as a Celtic player.

It was equally important Erik Sviatchenko came through 90 minutes with Kolo Toure. The defence is set for some almighty challenges ahead, and will need to face them with little common game-time to allow partnerships to be cemented.

There’s a degree of trepidation for the Champions League task ahead, but pretenders to our domestic dominance beware: evidence mounts that this is a good Celtic team – one which will continue to improve for some time to come.

    Few quick Celtic/personal memories:

Listening to Jackie scoring four and then the usual heartache. Too much for a boy.

    Henrik.

More heartbreak when Mojo joined the huns. Didn’t understand the wider aspects because of youth.

Celebrating like a lunatic in a St Petersburg bar when we beat Moscow. Much to the embarassment of my partner.

Centenary final, St Pats massacre and all wins in that period against the huns. Actually, all wins against the huns. Now that we have a new Rangers, it won’t be the same again.

Sifting through piles of old Celtic Views and reading so many great and fascinating things about Celtic.

Many, many interactions – often drunken – discussing Celtic with non Celtic supporters.

  3. My top 10 Celtic memories:

My brother taking me to my first game (aged 7) – Celtic 3 – 3 Motherwell 1959

Celtic 5 Huns 1 (January 1966). Big Yogi destroys Rangers on a sandy pitch on a foggy day.

Celtic 2-1 Internazionale. Watching on TV in Coatbridge with my Dad and brother with two sisters ejected from premises after Inter scored first.

Celtic v Red Star 5-1. Jinky runs amok.

Celtic 4 – 0 Huns. Scottish Cup Final. Rangers destroyed by half time. Their fans try to get game abandoned.

Leeds 0 – 1 Celtic. European Cup semi-final 1st leg. Jinky destroys Terry Cooper.

Celtic 2 – 1 Leeds. 2nd leg. Celtic complete the destruction of “England’s team of the Century” in front of a European record crowd.

Celtic 4 – 2 Huns. 10 men win he League.

Celtic 6 – 2 Huns. So many memorable things but Henrik’s chipped goal will forever stand out.

Celtic 1 – 0 Manchester United. Shunsuke’s amazing free kick and being the first team from the group to qualify for the last 16.

There are many, many other joyous memories of supporting Celtic (Vojvodina Novi Sad, Dukla Prague) but I’ve had to be brutal.

@BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS I hesitate to post a link, but after that article came out, the writer, Joel Stein, agreed to talk about it on a podcast with one of the main offenders. The guy’s name is Milo Yiannopoulos–he’s part of the sociopathic “alt-right” clique that Donald Trump has recently embraced. This wee character makes James Traynor’s self-righteous mockrage look like good-natured ribbing from BFDJ.

The techniques these people use are eerily similar to the stuff we’ve been seeing from Sevconians. Whenever people (correctly) accuse them of being racist, they just call the accuser a racist. You know the type. Avoid at all costs!

Got a feeling my memories can’t compete against the sixties ones. Oh well.

I haven’t read many books that have been that grim but that engrossing (Birdsong was a mightily depressing – and lengthy – read but another that captured my attention). It is a real talent for an author to be able to do that. I read a critique on The Road which discussed the author’s views on the present, the future and mankind and also delved into why we find these types of stories (dystopian futures, end of the world, zombies etc) so fascinating. If I can find it again I’ll post it – a very interesting read.

Was it the polysyndetic syntax that made you draw comparison? :-)

    _________________________________________________

For polysyndetic syntax and unusual writing styles look at Gabriel Garcia Marquez, especially El otoño del patriarca – The Autumn of the Patriarch. His novels evoke the sweaty heat and dryness of Colombia and suck you right in. The interspersing of magical events throughout his work is, well, magical. Most are fairly accessible though the enormously long sentences and paragraphs in Autumn of the Patriarch are challenging. Leaf Storm is a good access point to his work.

The great Gianni Rivera not only played that night, he ran the entire game for 90 minutes. It was a sublime performance, in my opinion, one of the greatest displays I’ve seen by any player. It was also one of my biggest disappointments that we got knocked out that night. To me, Celtic were the best team in Europe from 1967 – 1970.

I look in almost every day but haven’t posted for years, but the “10 best moments” discussion has inspired me to post. For what it’s worth here are my, very personal, 10 best Celtic moments:

    1. Lisbon 67

    2. The 4-2 game – 10 men win the league

    3. The 6-2 game – Henrik’s chip

    4. Seville

    5. St Mirren 5-0 – 1966, my first game

    6. 2 – 0 Real Madrid (1979?)

    7. 1973 – Hibs 0 – 3, first time I saw Celtic win the league (Deans 2, Dalglish)

    8. 1972 – Hibs 6 – 1, first time I saw Celtic win the Scottish Cup

    9. 1968 – St Etienne 4 – 0 my first European match

    10. 2003 Blackburn 0 – 2

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of my favourites – 100 years of Solitude was the book that really got me into literature. He also got me into other Latin American writers such as Borges and Neruda. Latin American authors have a wonderful style and use words beautifully.

  17. Torino supposed to have a private jet on standby for Simunovic…..I wonder if Sir David Murray has his on standby,

    Another personal one.

Much cherished green, white and gold scarf was lost in a Poznan high rise(typical Soviet one ). Day before I left, I was walking down the stairs and saw scarf hanging up by entrance. Relief and gratitude followed. Sentimentality, eh?

  25. On the evidence I’ve seen, and thinking what Brendan might do I’d say Jozo Simunovic although still unfit, has his jacket on a very shoogly peg at Celtic.

Arrived injured, then played one or two games, got injured then completed around 20 appearances in total, then got injured in the long term.

Not rocket salad that we’d be open to offers to get some of our money back, especially since he’s another mans signing, or was it the same committee that lined up Boeriggter. Jack Wilshere put out on loan by Arsenal so bound to be linked with Celtic, did I already mention Boeriggter?

As for the whole experience; Revie’s team were reckoned to be the best in the world. I was fascinated by how people could see them as better than Celtic. My dad and my 2 older brothers went to Elland Road for the away leg. I remember even when we went 1-0 down my dad had an unshakeable faith that we would win as he told me we played them off the park in Leeds. I was still a wean at the time so absolutely took him at his word and he was right! What an unforgettable experience! I didn’t think it could ever have been better than beating Red Star 5-1 the season before but it was; it also made up from the bitter memories of AC Milan beating us 1-0 in late 1969 when big Billy made an arse of it and Perio Prati scored early on. Despite pounding them for 75 minutes we couldnae score. I was inconsolable and burst into tears at the end of the game!
