FA Prem goes international below Uefa radar

793

The existence of the Premier League International Cup, a tournament for under-21s, which the FA Premier League launched this is a fascinating development.  It’s a toe in the water for the Premier League who are running a multi-nation tournament out-with the auspices of Uefa.  A consequence of excluding the European governing body is that all games must be played in the territory of England and Wales, despite Celtic and seven others of the 16 teams residing outside that region.

Uefa retain exclusive rights to hold tournaments across multiple territories, although this definition accommodates the existence of the Welsh FA and Welsh teams participation in competitions run by the English FA.

The Premier League has a broken business model which they have been unable to resolve for a decade of more, as they hae studiously avoided growth in their key TV revenue stream stalling.  When it does, innovative solutions will be required.

As far as Celtic are concerned, I’m delighted we’re there.  In the absence of NextGen this will be a valuable addition to the youth players’ development this season.

Foundation News:

I’m up for the Zip Slide from the top of the Jock Stein Stand to pitch level in front of the Lisbon Lions’.  Never done anything as ridiculous in my life but it’s a one-off opportunity for a fee of £30 plus a commitment to raise £125 for the Foundation.

Pile in here, if you’re brave enough for the Celtic Park pitch…………

Not had more than a glance at the annual report yet. Statements dated 12 September? Hmmm.

Delaney’s & Frantic, ha ha. The dancers were as good looking as bags of spanners.

We went up to see them the first time we went to Daisy’s but I’m sure Gal took over the mic and some party tunes were sung. That was the day we won one nil and helped us towards the 1986 title.

The next times we went to Daisy’s, the bar emptied when the dancers came on upstairs and we stayed in the bar as we got served quicker. Priorities and that.

They also served Cheese & Chilli toasties in the bar. You had to eat them with no one within a three foot radius of you or else they got splattered with burning chilli.s

The saunter to the place of dung was something else particularly trying to get up the big sandy hill as a shortcut & toilet stop.

A few years later, the Patersons recommended the Prince of Wales boozer just off Union Street and started going there. A wee bit more refined, had a better choice of swallay and nicer toilets. The joy of advancing years.

When you say “PLC recompense” I assume you mean all the directors salaries. I’m too lazy to add them up precisely but I think £3M total is a decent ballpark. Let’s say we knocked £2M off that. Do you think £2M would make a huge difference to our overall squad budget?

What if the people you employ at that wage level cannot strike as good commercial deals and income drops elsewhere?

We lost an average of £8M/season under MON. Great though it was. I think his leaving was a lot more with being advised that needed to stop, than any concern about wages going to directors. Life in the slow lane didn’t suit him.

I should add that I think PLs wage (and maybe others) is excessive given the size of the company. However, people that I assume know what they’re doing obviously feel he’s worth the money. He doesn’t set his own wage.

Bobby Murdoch, just got round to reading the article about Dexy’s you posted.

Very good. Kevin’s wild black curly hairy is certainly a thing of the past. Merton Mick Talbot was on keyboards when I saw them at the Pavillion about nine or ten years ago.

Dexy’s, despite a twenty seven year gap between records, are still one of my favourite bands.

Their covers of seven days too long & breaking down the walls of heartache got me into Northern Soul.

It was interesting to see how the Urgent Action Campaigns are arranged presently. I was active in AI back in the seventies when we were writing and posting letters to embassies and prisons around the world.

The greatest problem with Celtic Football Club is that the people in charge see us as one half of the same coin.

I don’t disagree with Lawells salary it’s the policy he implements.

The joke approach to Roy Keane that still hasn’t been explained…the prices we will get charged when Rangers return. If we choose to go back for that will we still need to sell 10 million of talent?
