Famine, LSE complaints, David, Billy and Henrik

938

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here).  The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community.  The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.

The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child.  The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.

Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter.  Well done to Howson and his collaborators.  If you get a chance, check it out.

Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs.  If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.

Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.

The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club.  The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.

The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers.  Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.

Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.  We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill.  Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.

These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.

We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic.  We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.

ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

  1. Stairheedrammy @ 20.28hrs,

Yes you could describe what a couple of people did on Sunday as intolerant. I have no issue with anybody not “remembering” after all its still a supposedly free country.

But what a selfish few did was to embarrass our club and give ammunition to our enemies. I have spent the last few days defending our team and our fans and frankly all I wanted to talk about was the game and our top of the league status.

Regarding AM playing against Scotland. Of course he will get booed and he won’t give a monkeys.

  3. Brazilian-born Bulgarian footballer Marquinos asked for room with Aleksandr Tonev. Both players are on training camp before Euro 2016 qualifier against Malta. When the journalist asked if this is a sign of support for Tonev, Marquinos said – I told Tonev, if he touches me he will begrudge it. After this Marquinos smiled and hugged Tonev.

Players are best mates from CSKA Sofia.

    That’ll do for me :-)

I think most Tims who attended away games when Aiden was in the team recognise that much of the abuse he took was of a sectarian and racist nature.

    LiviBhoy,

God Save the Queen is the national anthem of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    It’s Scotland’s as well.

It was played and booed at EVERY Scotland game up until 1980ish.

Why is it played as England’s national anthem and not Scotland’s?

I suppose the correct answer is there should be no separate Scotland and England football teams.

It is all one big anomaly and we could talk in circles about it all night!

There will be no trouble on Friday at or after the match.

The game will be a tense close exciting affair and will end one all.

Both mcgeady and Mccarthy ( if fit to play) will be booed throughout but it will spur them on to play the game of there lives.

Ronny will announce his retirement after the game ( for personal reasons, rumoured to involve ladies of low morals and colombian marching powder)

    There yis are

  7. Jobo Mobo Baldie on

On Friday night I’ll be supporting my favourite other team – Scotland. In the context of that game, indeed any game, I’ll hope my team do well and the opponents don’t. If Anthony Stokes plays for Ireland on Friday I’m likely to give him stick – during that game. In a similar vein should Lewis McLeod (or Steven Naismith, etc) score the winner I’ll be dancing round the living room.

If Ireland were playing England I’d be supporting Ireland. Indeed, whoever was playing England I’d support – much the same logic that I apply to any game involving Triggers Broom FC.

I’m content in my own mind that I’m still a decent fella!

  8. With the game being on a Friday,I can see thousands of Irish fans just coming over for the weekend.Glasgow is a brilliant venue for them.

Sorry I cant go along with the doom mongers.I cant see any trouble between the fans.

A wee eye should be kept out however around the city centre for the “Sieg heiling, fascist,No voters”who showed up in George Square

  9. Greenpinta, I fully agree that I always cringe when this time of year comes round as it sets us up as some sort of anti social pariah in the eyes of the MSSM, and through them this is transmitted to the wider Scottish public, though for many this just confirms the views they already hold. My worry is how it’s sold to the wider world. Would I rather we all sat back and did what we were told, even when we don’t believe in it, probably not. Reading the story earlier of how the ordinary German people were instrumental in ending the first great (terrible) war by shaking off the official mindset and rebelling, I wondered what would happen in this country in the same situation. Probably those guys who ignored the pressure to be silent would be saying something.

  10. Seen a guy on an Irish blog giving advice to travellers. Saying Glasgow voted for Independence just stick to the Celtic Pubs in the East End of Free Glasgow. T’would be great graffiti in the Barrowlands “You are now entering Free Glasgow”, don’t suppose ‘twould last too long though.

I was always confused at the abuse given the Aiden by Hibs fans. When asking those fans they said they booed Aiden because he didn’t play for Scotland and he got riled by it. I was at the game when BTM was gaffer and Aiden was sent off. It certainly worked that day. I asked them why a historically irish club would boo a scots Irishman and they had no proper response. Hibs fans in general have erased that part of their history and really want no part of it. They are a Leith club. Of course they are not they are originally from the cowgate and played their games at Tollcross on the meadows. Hibs fans ignore the history they don’t like and most have a loathing for celtic through jealousy for our success which they believe wrongly would have been theirs if we had never been formed. Another confused bunch at times the Hibees. don’t tell Mrs LB I said so though!

And then there’s the McQueen intervention asking fans to give McGeady and McCarthy a rough time because they elected not to play for the country of their birth. It’s a greater shame that Strachan saw fit to support this tripe.

This means that to be consistent, Scotland’s fans would need to give Martin and Morrison a rough time as well, for opting to play for Scotland, not the country of their birth.

Did you ever hear such garbage. Are those ones fond of calling themselves football people able to think at all ?

I am well aware what God save the queen is and when it has been played in the past.

My point is that huge points have been made this week about respect. If the English rugby team can play at Croke Park and it is respected than surely a group of Scotland fans can respect it.

If the Tartan Army do boo it I hope the media are as scathing about it as they have been about a couple of people breaking a minutes silence.

You can’t expect only the anthems you like to be respected. Great nations respect all peoples and their anthems. The Irish led the way at Croke Park. It was exceptional to watch. An example was set. I felt like applauding their sportsmanship and their integrity as people.

  17. Re The match itself, I can see a cagey boring game, with both sides set up defensively, its a game that could be decided on a mistake. Not sure how the Bookies are reading it, I’d make Scotland slight favourites with home advantage but there’s not much in it.

Are you thinking of the ’83 game – 2 down half-time and 2 pens Charlie Nick v the Girvan $hitehouse at the Broomloan end?

Other 2 goals – headers from Tam McAdam & Frank McGarvey.

I have a real dislike for Hibs and their support for a number of reasons which has built up over a number of years. Just don’t tell Mrs Livibhoy :-)

Re the hooligan issue, there’s a much greater chance that any amalgamation of Scottish casuals will prefer a pop at the English than the Irish.
