Famine, LSE complaints, David, Billy and Henrik

938

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here).  The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community.  The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.

The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child.  The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.

Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter.  Well done to Howson and his collaborators.  If you get a chance, check it out.

Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs.  If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.

Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.

The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club.  The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.

The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers.  Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.

Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.  We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill.  Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.

These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.

We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic.  We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.

ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

    opinions…weve all got them.

to be fair he was very inexperienced when he got the job and Aberdeen & Dundee United were in their great pomp. In his final season the Rangers ‘revolution’ had started but we still managed to blow a 10 point lead. If we’d won that one, as we should have, they would never have got 9.

But even Tommy Burns said he was the wrong man, at the wrong time in the wrong place.

    Natknow –

There is a difference. At Fir Park he is not playing against the country of his birth, so there has to be a sinister reason for the abuse – sectarianism.

I am just asking a question here. Not trying to pick a fight. Just debating an issue.

    ——————————————————–

You think someone would boo at Fir Park because they are a bigot but then become nice and do nice booing for nice reasons at Hampden? Sorry Tom – doesn’t make sense. It’s the reason why someone boos that’s the defining factor – not which ground they’re in or whether it’s a league or international game.

I know we’re just debating – hence my deconstruction of your illogical position. :-)))

  6. Cheers for the insight…..

Again, I possibly might stand corrected… But when we signed players in the Burns management era, like big Pierre, and Di Canio…. Was Hay not at the forefront of the scouting of the these players at that time.

I just always had the impression the guy had a lot to offer Celtic, but was only given fleeting opportunities.

In the military they say that time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted.

Last week at Sevco was all about having a look see.

At this stage I think Mr Llambias is rather surprised at what lurks below decks of the good ship Sevco.

I understand that his associate Mr Leach might well be of the opinion that Mr Ashley gets the hell out of dodge.

Sources inform me that the meeting between Charles of Normandy and the Sheriff of Newcastle did indeed take place.

Charlie is a reasonable man and I am sure he would be amenable to some arrangement on the image rights if it was mutually beneficial.

Meanwhile I understand Deloitte are stonewalling on the accounts.

Before they sign off on them they require an ‘immediately actionable plan’ for the business.

For the avoidance of doubt the clock is ticking on those accounts.

At the moment I am told by sources that there is working capital to meet payroll this month, but not December.

Moreover Mr Llambias has made it clear that his boss Mr Ashley is not lady bountiful in this saga.

Of course the hacks have been peddling the fiction that the owner of Newcastle wanted to bankroll Sevco into the Champions League no matter the cost.

Mr Llambias has already worked out that more loans will need to be provided.

The ex-Newcastle United chap was shocked to learn of the remuneration packages of several senior payers and the management team.

I would not be surprised if Mr Ashley does become the lender of last resort after December then, controlling the debt, that a planned Insolvency Event will not be the next move.

This is certainly the understanding of sources close to Mr David Somers.

Of course it has been the position of Laxey Partners since the start of this year to push the button marked ‘Administration’.

Should an Insolvency Event occur then the point’s penalty will be an issue, but perhaps some expedient league restructuring might save the day on that one.

I would not be surprised if some exploratory discussions had not already taken place on that subject.

In the final analysis the decision on whether to stick or bust will, of course, be Mr Ashley’s and his alone.

However he needs quality information before he can make that call and that is why he currently has his two guys in there to crunch the numbers for him.

So far it has not made for pleasant reading.

If he can come to a noble arrangement with Charles of Normandy on the image rights then I think he will stick around.

Mr Ashley knows that most of the Onerous Contracts are Administration proof.

He should do because he has two of them.

The Superstore contract and the stadium naming rights.

If he could get the image rights then that would provide him with a nice little earner out of Ibrox.

Mr Ashley probably has three to four weeks to make up his mind.

Payroll for December will be a problem and more finance will be required.

On a lighter note I learned that one Ibrox oriented blogger had tried to open a line of communications with the Ashley ‘regime’, but the young chap was politely told to go away.

I suspect he was just reconnoitring a new position for himself.

    —————————————————————–

I understand it perfectly. Some fans may boo for that reason. It was YOU that stated that if it were a league game and they bood him THAT would be sectarian. I’m pointing out that those fans that boo him in a league game, and then boo him at a Scotland game are unlikely to be doing so for different reasons – which is the position you are taking. I don’t think that makes any kind of sense.

Can you explain why you think that person would suddenly be booing for a different reason when it’s an international? They’re either a bigot or they’re not.

  14. HT,

I deliberately used the word ‘largely’.

I was on a hospitality thingy at Love Street (the day of Nakas last minute fk) as a guest of a big St M fan.

During the half time teas and pies and the more liquid post match affair all the Buddies in our company would have loved AM playing for Scotland.

I think their desire/disappointment was heightened because Scotland were so absolutely crap at the time. Indeed it was suggested that the real reason for his decision was because Ireland were so much better!

In fact they were much more furious at Nakas ‘dive’ lol.

Obviously I cant say what every fan in every away ground thought but that was my direct small sample experience of people I didn’t know and who had no reason to spare my feelings!

  19. I was in the ticket office earlier picking up Celtic tickets but enquired about tickets for Friday because there were signs up at each desk stating that anyone sitting in the wrong allocated section could be removed or risk arrest.

I was told that the majority of tickets allocated to FAI have been given to fat cats and this has led to a number of Irish supporters buying tickets for areas designated for Scotland supporters.

I know several Ireland supporters who have tickets for the ‘wrong’ end.

  20. PS all that said, there is without doubt a lingering, sometimes overt anti Irish Scottish sentiment.

But like general bigotry and sectarianism it is less than once it was.

Few people give a toss about religion these days. Nationality and associated xenophobic stereotyping however…

  21. I don’t have a problem with fans booing Aiden for not choosing Scotland ONLY if they boo all Scots born players who play for another country. If it is only the ones who choose Ireland it is bigotry.

  22. justafan

I don’t necessarily think that St Mirren are the best example. Over the years there’s been very little antagonism or malice between the two sets of supporters. Indeed I’ve personally known St Mirren supporters with strong Celtic leanings. Chick Young ain’t one of them :-)

I’d direct it at many of the other SPL clubs that we went to when Aiden was with us. Frequently the booing would be followed by sectarian or racist taunts or shouts.

  23. Natknow –

You seem to be hanging onto the image of the same person booing at Fir Park and then booing at Hampden.

We’re talking about 2 different animals. If a wee guy at Fir Park is booing McGeady playing for Celtic v Motherwell, he hasn’t turned his back on Motherwell, so the booing is probably sinister.

If a Scotland fan boos McGeady while playing for Ireland against Scotland, then I don’t class that as bigotry. It’s rivalry.

  25. I have fears the Tartan Army will boo both visiting teams anthems in the two up and coming matches. I hope they don’t. National anthems should be respected.

As for Ireland fans being in the home end I would have no issue with that personally. If the tens of thousands of tartan army fans have not booked tickets and the Irish have managed to buy these briefs then they have brought the situation on themselves and with the great reputations of both supports I would hope they could watch the match in relative peace and enjoy the spectacle.

I have sat in the wrong end of grounds many times across Scotland and further afield and respect the home crowd whilst watching the match. Personally wouldn’t do it again but the TA and the boys in green are a passionate lot and I hope they respect each other if sat next to each other and enjoy what should be a cracking match.

    My tuppence worth;

Scotland fans likely to boo McGeady because he’s good and would have enhanced the Scotland side.

Scotland fans unlikely to boo Paton because he’s shoite and would have added nothing to the Scotland side

    or

Scotland fans likely to boo Mcgeady because of the large hun element who hate all things Celtic and Irish.

Scotland fans unlikely to boo Paton because of the large hun element who will see his decision as a declaration of his true blue credentials.
