Famine, LSE complaints, David, Billy and Henrik

938

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here).  The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community.  The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.

The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child.  The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.

Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter.  Well done to Howson and his collaborators.  If you get a chance, check it out.

Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs.  If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.

Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.

The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club.  The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.

The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers.  Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.

Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.  We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill.  Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.

These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.

We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic.  We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.

ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

BTW – you must live near me these days? I’m in Colinton. We could have had this discussion in a more civilised place – such as a hostelry! :-))

I think it is a Uefa directive that fans respect national anthems. Personally I think it is common decency. That’s just my opinion though.

    How’s???

Scotland have been regularly pumped over the years and are known for causing little bother.

I agree but would a Scots born player who decided to okay for …Ohhh let’s say Northern Ireland be subject to the same treatment?

  6. Tom, if it’s rivalry that leads Scotland fans to boo scots born players who choose to play for the Republic why don’t they boo Scots who choose to play for the 6 counties? Can it be anything other than racialism?

  7. Just heard Aiden McGeady is curlled up in bed , greetin his eyes oot incase the bad boys boo him…jeez…

    Yorkbhoy,

I think you’ll find that’s what will happen.

I’m afraid you are probably right…

  10. Lots of people in the British Isles have mixed birth, parent and grandparent qualifications for football.

Even spending time at school is a qualifier for the UK nations.

As such, nationality in football is pretty diluted.

I think a key differentiator between AM and JMcC and most other British Isles players who do not pick their birth country is this.

Most pick a lower ranked country because they don’t see a chance with the higher ranked. Professional decision.

Both AM and JMcC would have got a game for Scotland but chose Ireland (similarly average teams)

For most in the TA, that is the issue

  11. To be honest, the regular guy on the street probably couldn’t name a Scots born player who plays for norn Ireland.

I had no idea Paton did until the zaluska kirry oan.

  12. Incidentally a mate of mine from work says the scottish hooligan element are teaming up to have a go at the irish. Not sure what the craic is they don’t usually target ordinary fans but I would urge caution to our irish friends around the usual areas around Paradise.

This is outside the game obviously and these clowns are not football fans just wee thugs who will probably be nowhere near it when the English appear next week!

  13. Marrakesh Express on

James will get booed by the tartan army but it’ll be written off as banter by the msm. The usual ‘nothing to see here’ stance, and therein lies the root of Scotland’s dirty secret.

As a Hamilton player the lad received vile abuse from the main stand suits at Ibrox, and one midweek game at Palmerston saw Billy Reid report some QOS bigots to the cops, who lifted them.

Not a cheep in the papers as you’d expect, probably because they couldn’t use the ‘he brings it on himself’ line, as they did NL early on in his Celtic career.

  14. Game on BT sport sees Barnet torturing serving soldiers by forcing them to watch dross for free. I hope the BBC report this disrespect.

  15. Alasdair MacLean on

If Scotland fans boo the Irish National anthem? Bad for me.

Booing “God Save the Queen” against England? Different kettle of fish altogether.

    Can’t compare the two situations.

  16. CHC-I seen Mick McCarthy and the Beast on TV promoting the game for an online gambling mob (might be 888), they were holding a placard punting Friday’s game as The Old F$#@…..?? With a tricolour and a saltire on it.Totally irresponsible.Someone posted last week Celtic owned Copyright for “The Old F$#@”, if so,i wonder what their take is on it?

  17. Of course they should never have changed the nationality rule in the first place!!!!

Then the baddies could have booed Aiden like they did Jinky :-)

  18. Aiden McGeady has been booed many times. It will spur him on and he will be well up for the match. Looks like the right back will not be Alan Hutton which is a bonus for Aiden because he won’t have someone trying to break his legs with every challenge. Personally looking forward to the two internationals this week but I just hope the Scotland fans don’t embarrass themselves because even a small minority can cause a lot of animosity from the media and public in this country.

  19. From Derek Bateman The bit that niggles at me is the tone of glorification implied by designer poppies, of showers of the damn things falling from the roof like party balloons and the art installation of thousands of ceramic examples at the Tower of London which seeks to press our pleasure buttons at its visual luxuriance instead of reminding us of the ripped and smashed faces of the war-wounded.

My wee bit- my wife about 30yrs ago was a warden in a sheltered housing place and helped a Mr Grieve. He joined the army aged 15yrs and became a famous sniper in the trenches in WW1. In his words, he was given loads of medals many guid ones, which he threw in the fire when he got home. Had half his face blown away and was one of the first to receive plastic surgery by a Harold Giles in Sidcup but only put in his glass eye when receiving visitors. Hated the elite establishment which he believed slaughtered all his mates. Refused to wear a poppy. Wonderful man whose stories were recorded by a local school but were considered too graphic for the kids and who passed away about 20 years ago.

  20. Davie Hay on selling Frank McGarvey after the 1985 Scottish Cup Final victory, where Frank scored a remarkable winner…

Remarkably, not only was it McGarvey’s last goal for Celtic, it was also his last game. Controversially, years later, he said, ‘Davie Hay took over when Billy McNeill left and I always feel I was unfairly treated by him. Although I played well for him, he wanted his own players. I was twenty-nine years old and wanted to spend the rest of my days at Celtic, but he sold me on though my Cup Final goal made his job safer.’

Hay replied, ‘I’ve often been asked why I transferred Frank McGarvey to St Mirren that summer. I also read somewhere that Frank had said his goal against Dundee United saved me from the sack. I can tell him, I saved myself from getting a P45. Actually, I think he should have thanked me for allowing him to stay on the pitch that afternoon. I made HIM a hero. While I was mulling over my substitutions, I admit I did think of taking off McGarvey. Even he might admit he wasn’t playing particularly well against United. But something popped into my head that my old Motherwell gaffer Ally MacLeod used to say, “Don’t take off a goalscorer.” Ally would repeat over and over, “When you need a goal, keep on your goalscorer.” That stuck with me and, boy, did we need a goal against Jim McLean’s team that day.

‘Frank was coming out of contract that summer and I decided to offer him an extension. I duly did so and I presented him with a deal that was identical to the one that was about to expire. I could see he was distinctly underwhelmed by my gesture. Frank believed he was worth more and I disagreed. I thought he was on reasonable money and I told him so. I asked him to go away and think about it. However, I detected more than just a slight rumbling of discontent from Frank and I didn’t want a dissatisfied player in my dressing room.

‘I already had Mo Johnston, signed for £400,000 from Watford in October that season, and Brian McClair to lead the attack. I was already planning in making them my regular partnership up front in the new term. Brian had completed the season with twenty-four goals and Mo chipped in with nineteen. I had also signed Alan McInally for £90,000 from Ayr United and the bustling hitman was scoring on a regular basis, too. Frank, Cup hero or not, was expendable. I actually accepted a reduced transfer fee from St Mirren for the player to enable him to get a more lucrative signing-on fee. I’m still waiting for him to say thanks.’

Strong stuff from Caesar & The Assassin, the stunning new book out tomorrow.

You can ask Davie Hay about this – and also how he nearly signed Davie Dodds and Joe Jordan (!) when he comes on CQN later this week.

You can pre-order your signed copy of the book at http://www.cqnbookstore.com

Check out the great DVDs we have on there too!

  21. Genes a boys name, you could describe what a couple of people did on Sunday as intolerant, but that would also have to include the MSSM who will I’m sure be much more tolerant of abuse directed at those pesky Scottish Fenians playing on Friday night.

  22. Alasdair

Disagree personally. We live in a nation where we are told respect must be given. The same people who moan about lack of respect for the fallen on Sunday are now ok to boo the anthem that everyone fought under in this nation during that war? This is a thoroughly confused nation. Personally I show the same respect for a national anthem whether it’s San Marino or England it makes no odds to me. I won’t be at Paradise for either game tho.

  26. Travelling Irish Supporters are normally impeccably behaved. However the close proximity of countries could tempt non football people to travel for the craic. Personally I just hope everything goes off well, I’d like to see both Anthems respected and that all football supporters from both sides get home safely. At this stage the result is incidental to me. No doubt once the game kicks off and I start getting engrossed, that will change. My main concern as a guy constantly trying to promote Celtic & Glasgow to a wider Irish audience is that if there are serious problems it might alienate potential Irish recruits to the Celtic cause.

  27. Blimey did Davie Hay really say those things about Frank?

Ironic about money or what? Given DHs own playing days dispute with Celtic! ” first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye”.

And then accepts a reduced transfer fee from St Mirren while also complaining about not getting enough financial support from the Board.

Frank saved Davie? Davie saved himself? Nah it was Ally McLeod wot won it!

Dearie me Davie was a poorer manager than even I thought….fantastic player though!

  28. H.T.

I agree with your analogy of St. Mirren, my nephew and his dad are big St Mirren fans, they seriously dislike Sevco, they actually ask me to send them links from Phil and James Forrest to laugh at them. They are not too keen on us, but no doubt they dislike Sevco more. That’s my tuppence worth from a straw poll of two.

  29. Geordie…
