Fan pressure gets through to SPL chairmen

714

My initial reaction, that the outcome from today’s SPL meeting and votes on Financial Fair Play, was on the upside of expectations, appears to be well founded.  All matters not relating to a Newco football team were passed.  Clubs had the opportunity to vote through a process to allow a Newco access the league but it was apparent that there was clearly insufficient support for this proposal, making subsequent proposals to apply sanctions to a Newco moot.

I understand sentiment towards Rangers reflected the comments from St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, who said, “What’s a court getting involved in football for? The decision had been made.”

There is no question that fan pressure has been brought to bear on club chairmen.

This interpretation compares starkly with BBC Reporting Scotland tonight who, if I paraphrase, said, ‘If Rangers don’t get a CVA, depending on your point of view, they will either get “back” into the SPL with light or with punitive punishment’.  The broadcaster also threw in the suggestion that ‘Rangers’ might get ‘back’ in without punishment.

I’m a huge admirer of Reporting Scotland but this was perhaps the worst 60 seconds in 85 years of BBC reporting.  There was a decision made to ignore the real story, that no facility to get a Newco (not Rangers) into the SPL was approved, to ignore the outcome of several months of fan pressure, and to tailor a story that suits a controversial narrative.

Fortunately, it looks like the BBC will be back on form soon, but they really need to look at what happened today.

As for the CVA, it becomes less and less likely by the hour.

UPDATE

Having spoken to BBC Reporting Scotland’s Alastair Lamont it’s clear he has been briefed differently from me, which explains the contrast between our interpretations. This story is becoming a nightmare to report, and probably to read. Fair play to Alastair for being up for the debate. I feel much better about my favourite news programme.

Instead of per capita, why don’t you just put up the raw figures for those involved in the slave trade per nationality? Scots, Irish, english, welsh and any other countries you have figures for.

I was in Poznan two years ago in the summer and found two Irish pubs.

One was downstairs and large but pricey. It is called Brogans and it will be good Craic – http://www.brogans.pl/

The other was small, less expensive and had a big poster of Celtic park and a Celtic jersey on the wall. I preferred that one but can’t remember the name BUT

If you enter the Stare Miasto (old town Square) from Szkolna street at the bottom left corner of the square, turn to your immediate left and walk up the first street directly on your left at that corner, the Irish pub is (or was) in the first or second street on the left of that street. I think it is called Muma street.

It is small but clearly Celtic friendly.

I watched the World cup final there.

I think we can all be proud of the leading role our country played in stamping out the slave trade. The most fearsome sight a slaver ever saw was a Royal Navy frigate bearing down on his ship.

Certain types of people are fond these days of demanding apologies for bad things done in the distant past. To balance it out, they should be willing to offer thanks for the good things our ancestors did. (thumbsup)

  21. I consider myself Irish, not Scottish despite being born and raised in The Gorbals, however the Scots didn’t just play such a huge part in developing the British Empire, they played a huge part in developing THE WORLD.

Medicine and Engineering are the two fields that changed the world and the Scots played a unbelievably important part in their development, when looking back in history!

I suppose the whole predestination idea of being part of an elect which featured to a greater extent in Scottish culture than in most countries probably did have a part.

But I think it was probably more to do with economic factors.

I just wish people would start from reality and build their ideas from there, rather than have some romantic preconceptions and then try to shoehorn the facts to suit.

I never once contested that Scots in the slave trade were not often the masters, if you read back to my very first post in reply to gallagher you will se that in my last line. Ernie however neglected to mention that line so he could attack Scotland and Scots through me.

Scots had no compunction about selling fellow scots into slavery, as did others from other nations. I could tell you stories about what went on in Ireland that does not present Ireland in a particular good light, I have RTE documentaries saved on here that I could show you that would sicken you, but I won’t post them. To what end, to prove that every race, demographic has its good and bad. Ihave books about the Irish in early Boston and the Fenian brotherhood and what was done in the name of Irish Republicnaism, again I want post them nor decry the Irish.

Ernie just hates the Scots and everything Scottish but he won’t tell you why. I’m beginning to wonder if he knows why.

The tragedy is that not many of the undoubted acievements of the Scots in the various fields you mention actually benefitted the Scots themselves.

West of Scotland stats for serious illness indicate that ,for whatever reason, we were not the beneficiaries of the marvellous advances in medicine of our fellow Scots.

  32. CELTIC´S new Nike away kit is out today (May 31) and already fans are snapping up the new black strip, which has been created to help the club celebrate its 125th anniversary.

The away jersey is a modern classic, inspired by the club´s proud history. The jersey focuses on a contemporary design – it stays true to Celtic’s roots and is hooped, but in a more tonal way.

The hoops are coloured anthracite with black, giving the jersey a very contemporary and sophisticated look. The club crest is surrounded by a Celtic-knot work. The club’s Irish heritage is reflected with green, white and gold colour accenting on the sleeves and the socks which reflect Celtic’s strong Irish roots.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We´re delighted with the new away kit for next season and we are sure it will be popular with our supporters. We very much look forward to celebrating our 125th year and the kits which have been developed are a fitting tribute to this milestone season.

“Once again, we would like to thank both Nike for their work in this regard and, of course, Tennent´s our shirt sponsor with whom we have enjoyed an excellent relationship and who have made such an important contribution to the club.”

Steve Annand, Commercial Managing Director for Tennent Caledonian Breweries, said: “As main club sponsor, with an almost 40-year association with Scottish football, we were proud to play our part in the development of the new home shirt and feel this new away kit will be another winner with the fans.

“We look forward to working with the club and the fans to mark Celtic’s 125th season, a great milestone in the club’s history.”
