Feeding the thousands, from Celtic to Southampton

507

News that Southampton FC have nominated Mary’s Meals as their official international charity partner is a genuine great football story, and a significant landmark for the Scottish-based charity which now feeds over a millions children per day.

Mary’s Meals were in touch on Friday with news and photographs from the fourth school kitchen paid for by Celtic Quick News readers, in Chibwata, Malawi. Since the kitchen was built, school enrolment has increased by 34% to 1226 pupils. Each day over 4,000 pupils are fed in school kitchens built by CQN readers.
Marys Meals Chibwata 600

The school role has increased because of the availability of a daily meal, but as well as being better fed and healthier, hundreds of pupils are now getting an education who previously missed out.  Benefits are not limited to food today, there are lifetime benefits of getting a primary education, which will help the pupils and the nation as a whole for decades.

Those of you who have put the occasional £1 into Appeal alongside the Magners’ competitions we run, or who have put significantly more than this on occasion, should be enormously proud of what you’ve achieved.  It is a stunning testament to the Celtic support.  Thanks for all your help.

Celtic have done enormous work with Mary’s Meals in the past through the Foundation but let’s hope this break into English football opens up many more opportunities for the charity.

The ExiledTim, thank you for your best wishes for Father Neil’s recovery.

Further to your post about juvenile and youth football.

Valencia had football coaching sessions at Glasgow Green in 2009 and 2010 , for 5 days .

My son attended the first but couldn’t attend the second one as he was injured.

The Valencia coach he was with , lifted the ball up before the first coaching session. He asked the boys what a football is made of. They replied leather. He then asked from which animal do we get leather from, they replied cattle. The coach then said has anyone seen a cow/bull in the air. It was his way of saying, keep the ball on the deck as often as possible.

I read many many years ago, when Corrie was on twice a week, that 40 million hours a week are wasted watching it, something like 2.6 people per household etc.

Imagine doing something for charity or your local community for that 40 mill hours, makes you think so it does :-)

    Quite a stat mate.

    Makes you think indeed.

If we gave 2 hours a week back into our community as a country 10.4 million hours a year would go back into Scotland.

If we did that our people, not our country, would be great again.

Most likely parliament would find a way to tax us on it tho.

    The peoples tax!!! Feckers

When your wife takes a pic its saving to the phones/Sim memory as opposed to external card memory. Tell her to look in the settings. What sort of phone is it?

  6. Thanks lhads for the reply . We just thought it strange you weren’t charged service from 1 to 7 at a table , but 8 upwards incurred the charge . But super meal all the same . Thanks again .

Check out any footage of the 74 Athletico Madrid game or Racing Club in 67!

These are extreme examples but Jinky got it from the useless big lumps in Scotland regularly. The idea was to get him to retaliate – Refs like Davidson loved that cos it was an automatic sending off for Retaliation (didn’t apply to stickies of course) – Jinky however rarely did so – he just picked himself up and skinned them again.

Another stat that got me thinking, re the tax you mentioned.

Take 3000 family cars, this comes from 10-15 years ago, so a Mondeo or such like, if they drive about for a year, doing the average mileage that a car does, 10K or so, they will produce the same emissions that a 747 does flying from Heathrow to New York, and the bastards have it in for the motrorist.

The new League Cup tournament in detail …

o A group stage will be introduced for the first round of the competition

o 40 teams will take part. Thirty-eight will be drawn from the SPFL, with the champions of the Highland and Lowland Leagues also participating

o The season’s European participants will not enter until the second round

o Eight groups of five teams will be drawn on what the SPFL is describing as a “loosely regionalised” basis, meaning no teams will face long trips

o Teams will play each other once in an identical format to the 2006/07 UEFA Cup, with each side playing two games at home and two away

o Premiership teams will be seeded and each placed into one of the eight groups

o The first match will be played on Saturday, July 16

o Subsequent matches will be played on July 20, 23, 27 and 30, all before the start of the league season

o Drawn matches in the group stage will go immediately to a penalty shootout

o The winner of the penalty shootout will be awarded a bonus point

o The tiebreak format for the competition will be in order: points gained, away goals scored, goal difference, total goals scored

o The eight group winners, and the four best runners up, will qualify for the second round

o Four rounds will then follow on an unseeded basis

o The final will continue to be played in March

I was listening to SSB earlier tonight, I know, but they said something that was along the same lines, or they didn’t say something that bothered me, a switcheroonie is on the cards, they know something is going down over at the bigot dome and I reckon the fix will happen before they go bust again, they will never be allowed to die, far too much money involved, there will always be a hun around come what may.

They creep up on ya, scare the crap out of you then growl at you coz you dont have eyes on the back of your head. Dont worry about air travel mate, we are one false flag away from that being taken away from the masses anyway!

  15. So encouraging two teams to go for a nil nil to open up a 50/50 chance of 4 points instead of three is going to enhance the game….good luck wi that!

  24. In fairness the thinking around the League Cup is innovative and is certainly worth a try. this type of thinking should be applauded.

I would love to see the Scottish Season switched to an earlier start, with a winter break. The earlier start would mean it would be the only show in town for 5 or 6 weeks, which would greatly improve the marketing value of the product but more importantly it would be a massive help to Scottish teams competing in Europe.

I also think individual Clubs need to do more to enhance the match day experience. Whether it be fan zones with entertainment, or stuff for kids.

Starting the season earlier should also mean more games played in better weather conditions, we need more people and better atmosphere, the new standing section will help but rather then stand back and clap themselves on the back for that one, Celtic which is the Club I care about should kick on looking for further improvements.

In conclusion the first obstacle that should be tackled is to stop the Police harassment of Football fans.

  25. We have eleven games between now and the end of January, 8 of which will not be played at Paradise.

    Good or bad thing?

So all our new signings, from the January window, will have to wait to make their home debuts V Ross County on Feb 13th.
