Feeding the thousands, from Celtic to Southampton

507

News that Southampton FC have nominated Mary’s Meals as their official international charity partner is a genuine great football story, and a significant landmark for the Scottish-based charity which now feeds over a millions children per day.

Mary’s Meals were in touch on Friday with news and photographs from the fourth school kitchen paid for by Celtic Quick News readers, in Chibwata, Malawi. Since the kitchen was built, school enrolment has increased by 34% to 1226 pupils. Each day over 4,000 pupils are fed in school kitchens built by CQN readers.
Marys Meals Chibwata 600

The school role has increased because of the availability of a daily meal, but as well as being better fed and healthier, hundreds of pupils are now getting an education who previously missed out.  Benefits are not limited to food today, there are lifetime benefits of getting a primary education, which will help the pupils and the nation as a whole for decades.

Those of you who have put the occasional £1 into Appeal alongside the Magners’ competitions we run, or who have put significantly more than this on occasion, should be enormously proud of what you’ve achieved.  It is a stunning testament to the Celtic support.  Thanks for all your help.

Celtic have done enormous work with Mary’s Meals in the past through the Foundation but let’s hope this break into English football opens up many more opportunities for the charity.

  6. It’s all about Celtic, no politics.

Nir Bitton and the Phantom Quotes

Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton was splashed about the tabloids and Celtic Interweb yesterday as “quotes” from his agent surfaced about the players future.

As soon as I seen these comments and headlines I was more than a little skeptical about their origin. The player has just signed a long-term deal at the club so talk of him moving on so suddenly was definitely a strange one.

It turned out to be nothing more than tabloid gossip, feeling the need to quell this rumour Celtic issued a statement that read –

A spokesperson for Celtic said: “We were delighted to agree a new contract recently with Nir and very pleased that he has committed his long-term future to Celtic.

“We know nothing about these reports but as Nir himself has said, Celtic is where he wants to be.”

Rarely do Celtic comment on the speculation surrounding any of the players but on this occasion had to put the record straight.

However, while the club says he’s going nowhere that is also somewhat misleading. Celtic can’t predict the bids and teams that are going to come in for any of their top talents in January and the summer. If the right bid came in for Nir then I’m sure like many players before him he would be off.

What Celtic are saying is the quotes were fabricated, the midfielder is enjoying his football and right now there are no bids for the Israeli and he will remain a Celtic player.

  7. Celticrollercoaster, have a very happy birthday. Had problems with PC so could not get on blog to thank you for asking about my health. Have had a couple of poor weeks. Missed two games, including Ajax. But getting there. Have a great day..

“A winter break is a no brainer for me.”

A possible problem for this `no brainer` is that winter weather here is not quite so predictable as it is in the Scandinavian countries . We might know that we will have some bad weather between December and April but there is little certainty about which of these months would be best suited for a mid-season close down.

I don`t know where that article came from but I did not think Celtic`s quote was `misleading` at all. Celtic did NOT say Nir was going nowhere. Only a small point, I know but I feel ,sometimes, Celtic supporters are too worried about being seen as fair minded.

  17. From Video Celts.

BT are believed to be paying £2m a year to sponsor the new look competition with the current BBC £1.5m/year deal for radio, television and internet coverage of the SPFL and League Cup ending in May.

The current BBC Scotland League Cup deal allows the broadcaster one live match from each round of the competition with Celtic’s semi-final and final ties last season bringing in bumper audiences. This season the BBC chose to show live coverage of the Inverness Caley Thistle v Ross County match ahead of Hearts v Celtic.

Announcing the new deal Neil Doncaster said: “We are delighted to welcome BT Sport as our exclusive League Cup TV broadcast partner and to have their support for the new format. Our agreement with BT Sport delivers a huge increase in the number of games being shown live as well as providing increased competition prize money for clubs.

“The new format has also enabled the re-introduction of a winter break for Ladbrokes Premiership clubs. We are consulting with Ladbrokes Championship, League 1 and League 2 clubs to establish whether they also favour a winter break in their respective divisions.”

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “BT Sport is thrilled to deepen its connection to Scottish football through this new long-term deal. Our team looks forward to bringing fans an exciting and innovative new competition from July 2016. Today’s agreement expands our summer programming line-up while also giving Scottish football fans an exciting new summer football competition.”

The new look tournament will make little difference to Celtic who along with all teams in European competitions will go straight into the last 16 of the competition which will be played as a straight knock out.

From July next year 40 clubs, including the winners of the Highland and Lowaland Leagues, will form eight groups of five playing each other once between July 16 and 30.

The eight group winners plus four runners up will be joined by the European representatives for the knock out stage.

It’s expected that the tournament will be completed in the autumn allowing the SPFL Premiership to enjoy a two week winter break in January.

I cant think of another poster in the history of this blog that Paul67 has insulted, can you ?

Special treatment singled out for me when he couldn’t actually find anything to reprimand me about, I mean who gets reprimanded for posting too much ?

Is there a financial risk if too many words are used ?

Copy/paste has now got a limit, well that’s no true only I have a limit on what I can copy/paste or talk about.

A brand new rule invented for me. A sop to sate some greetin faced censors that couldn’t actually find a breach of any rules.

A reprimand to give the illusion of a semblance of balance for the trolls, keeping the trolls happy, That betrays a very partizan application of his own rules when he has to make new ones up.
